I have no clue and have wondered about that stuff for a while. As of a few years ago, there were a decent number of MLB managers who didn't even make $1M a year. Based on a story yesterday in The Athletic about a scandal in the Baltimore front office, only four coaches are guaranteed full benefits as part of an agreement with the PA. The rest are basically just whatever the team feels like giving them.
Even if it’s $200k, it’s a good deal for him. Doesn’t have to move, and if he’s successful, it will lead to a managerial job.
I think he's more likely to be the next head baseball coach at UM than he is to be an MLB manager. And I don't think Bakich is leaving any time soon.
Found something on MLBTR: The Tigers have officially announced the hirings of Fetter and Nieves. Additionally, quality control coach Josh Paul and base coach Ramon Santiago will return to the staff, per the team.
You gotta give Avila credit though. He landed Hinch, and got one of the hottest pitching coaches on the market. He still has to add talent to the roster, but this is crucial step in right direction. Also props to him for forcing Gardenhire and his awful coaching staff out the door.
Looking back on it, I'm happy they hired Gardenhire. Sure, it would have been nice to have a more forward thinking pitching/hitting coaches, but the talent they were coaching was atrocious no matter who was there and I'm glad some first timer with a future wasn't ruined by the experience.
Because he wants to be a manager and being a bench coach is better on the resume than being a first base/outfield/baserunning coach. I'm very happy he got that job, and it gives him a great shot at being a manager somewhere else 12 months from now.
Just read we hired Lloyd McClendon to be minor league hitting coach. Just fucking great. Keep that bum away from our studs.
It's fascinating at this point how hard they've turned as an org to hire as many people who are either analytics-type guys, or just straight up stolen coaches from very analytic orgs. Hinch is from Houston, which was the forefront of a lot of the new age stuff. Lombard is from LAD, and Coolbaugh was a minor league hitting coach for LAD in 2018. Fetter is considered one of the more new age pitching minds in the sport. Now all they need to do is show the front office actually understands analytics in the players they acquire. Because to this point, pretty much every player they've acquired has been the opposite of that kind of mentality.
https://www.blessyouboys.com/2020/1...lb-mlb-erie-seawolves-west-michigan-whitecaps Interesting article about how the minors leagues are in for a shake up whenever they return. At the very least it appears the white caps will be moved up to high A and Flying Tigers low A as the Midwest and Florida State leagues appear to be doing a swap based on attendance and teams being contacted by mlb shrinking of the milb system. Further goes on to say tigers and Erie agreement ends in 2020 so White Caps may even be promoted all the way up to AA.
Nothing too crazy here, but thought it was somewhat interesting in terms of the players Hinch mentioned. Kind of surprised Goodrum was talked about as much as he was. Maybe he was asked specifically about him, though
I listened to the interview and he brought up Niko’s name, I think the question was around how he will develop the players
If we're going to look at a guy like Walker, does that mean we're potentially dealing someone like Turnbull or non-tendering Fulmer? Because I don't understand the premise of adding a vet to a rotation that already includes Boyd, Turnbull and Fulmer when Mize and Skubal got a month of experience and Manning is on deck.
So white caps are moving to high A? Was kind of hoping they’d get the AA team. Can’t see Erie lasting much longer.
Have they announced a AA team? Think issue with White Caps in AA is distance. I think Erie is already the western most team in that league. Whole Midwest and fsl swapping so thats how they got to high a
I think their facilities are below average too. I always thought Erie would go away when they eliminate one of the A ball teams. So West Michigan would be AA, and Lakeland would be the new A ball team.
I think high and low a both staying around, the FSL and MWL just swapping because of attendance numbers. Think short a is getting cut (Connecticut) and our double a affiliation with Erie ends after the season. There was some talk a few MWL teams may create a new AA league but thats up in the air.
I don't know how much control we have over whether Erie has a team or not. Seems like that's mostly an MLB call based on facilities.
Last I read they expect them to be ok after the renovations they are currently doing. But selfishly after moving to the west side of the state this month, I hope WM somehow got up to AA.
Seems like Theo is going to want a piece of ownership wherever he lands next. I don't think that's happening here.
