Good thing Tarik Skubal is the motherfuckin truth.
Riley Greene (not a bust) went 1-1 with a homer, 2 walks, 2 runs scored
Him and Austin Martin are going to form a great outfield for us
Law's top 100 prospects list has Mize at 20, Skrubal at 24, Manning at 32 and Greene at 41. Projects Greene in LF because of lack of speed and fringey arm.
What else makes you hate a person more?
I think his Greene report is kind of similar to his Manning stuff where he held one bad look against him from early 2017 for two years until he finally started to buy in. Greene's athleticism, by pretty much all accounts, is significantly improved from where it was as a HS junior. Law's write up makes it sound like his best case scenario is "good enough LF," and most of the stuff I've seen suggests that's more of a base line expectation.
Law having Mize at 20 scares me a little because I think he was the highest of anyone on Mize during his draft year. The write up makes it sound like it's all because of injury risk rather than his stuff being down, at least.
The Det News has a Torkelson write up saying he is athletic enough to play a corner OF spot. If he is a RF does that move him above Martin?
If he was athletic enough to play a corner OF spot in the big leagues 5 years from now, I would think he would be playing a corner OF spot right now.
This is the kind of stuff people always say about a 1B in their draft year. It's like all the times NBA draft people suggest some 7 foot center has good touch and could potentially develop range out to the 3-point line when they've never attempted a three in college.
On the plus side, if his bat is good enough that Law has a "good enough LF" ranked 41, that is fine. And the OF in Comerica is big enough that having Greene end up in LF with a better defensive player in CF could be a significant improvement in run prevention over the last 20 years.
Makes sense. The guys saying it are definitely on his side. "He could play SS or 3B, but we already have good players there!"
Nick Castellanos was athletic enough to play a corner OF spot as well. He just really sucked at it.
Had the same thought. I was encouraged by that ranking if Law is basically projecting him to be a nothing in LF.
Boyd let’s up another homer in his opening start. Ship him now!!!
Riley Greene has played in two games this spring. He's 2-2 with 2 HR and 3 BBs.
Perez allowed 2 doubles in the 9th inning but finished out the inning.
Turnbull went 2.0 IP with 0 H/R/BB and 4 Ks.
... then Perez was hit by a bus.
Who is Perez?
Franklin Perez. The main piece of the Verlander deal. He's got top of the rotation level potential and bottom of a coffin level durability.
Torkelson so far this season is 8-24 with 4 HR and 2 2b and 13 bb.
So we're picking between Hank Greenberg and Ty Cobb. Cool cool cool.
He walked 5 times last night. He's up to 18 walks, which pushed his OBP to .605 for the year. 11 of those walks were intentional, which kind of drops the value in those in terms of predicting future value, but that's still insane.
He's got 8 K in 9 games, which I'd like to see come down, but I also have to imagine it's tough in his situation when you're getting nothing to hit and you're trying to do something to make an impact.
Update before this weekends games:
Austin Martin: .394 AVG, .543 OBP, 3 HR, 8 RBIs, 4 2B, 8 BB, 1 K
Spencer Torkelson: .320 AVG, .605 OBP, 4 HR. 4 RBIs. 2 2B, 18 BB, 8 K
Nick Gonzales: .515 AVG, .667 AVG, 7 HR, 26 RBIs, 12 BB, 5 K
Emerson Hancock: 1-0, 4.91 ERA, 12 K
Right now, I’m still leaning Martin, just because he’s has more tools.
This guy is pretty spot on with his assessment.
I'm all in on Martin at this point, although I would like for someone I trust in the internet scouting community to tell me what to make of his defense at the various positions and where he projects best.
For Torkelson's sake, I hope all the IBBs stop once he gets into Pac 12 play because it's going to end up hurting his performance, in all likelihood. 20 year old trying to impress in his draft season and he gets to hit once or twice a game.
Torkelson has 6 walks through 18 innings of ASU’s series against Nebraska
None of the prospect people think Nick Gonzales is #1 overall caliber, but he hit 5 HR in a doubleheader today and has 12 HR in 12 games so far.
Nice to see Norris in mid season form already too
Lol Keith Law has Tigers farm system ranked 19th in baseball. Great job with the rebuild Avila.
Pathetic job and that’s putting it lightly
3 of the 4 guys we got from picking in the top 8 of draft. Skubal was good fine, but he hasn’t done much with some of the trade assets we had. Pretty pathetic, that we are 4th in our division.
I wish Illtch would have cleaned house after letting dumbroski go. Unfortunately he’s a bitch and just took the easy route and promote second in command. Collectively, Detroit sport team owners have to be the worst in the country hands down.
I have a hard time understanding how a team can have 4 top 50 prospects, but rank 19th overall as an org. Especially when 3 of those 4 are starting the season in AAA. That seems a tad harsh. Can't really argue on behalf of anyone outside of our top 5 right now, unfortunately, so maybe he's right.
He also doesn't have Paredes in his top 100. Def hates our team
The Tigers system have a lot of position players who can't fucking hit. If a couple of them - I'm looking at Parker Meadows, Nick Quintana, Jake Rogers and Willi Castro - can hold their own at the plate this year the future will look a lot better. Also, Franklin Perez is a wild card now.
With Skrubal, Manning and Mize there is a path to contention in a couple years, but some young position players filling in the roster would help an awful lot.
The funny thing about the system is, for all the talk of how loaded they are in pitching compared to hitting, that thins out really, really quick after the top guys. Once the wave of Mize, Manning, Skubal, Wentz and Faedo get to the big leagues in whatever capacity they end up in, there's almost nothing behind them in terms of arms outside of maybe a couple bullpen pieces.
On the flip side, they really lack high end hitters, but there are a fair amount of hitters with a chance to make something of themselves with bounce back or breakthrough years.
Kiley McDaniel’s top 100 prospects
Casey Bust Mize
So is Nova like wow this team sucks so I’m going to try to get cut?
Playing the Yankees today on MLBN. Mize is starting, and Manning and Faedo are both on the list of relievers. Cole is starting for the Yankees, so the game should move quick when we're at the plate.
He got rocked before that, but then again so did every other pitcher in this game except for Mize.
For context on everyone getting rocked, the wind is blowing out and we have 9 HR today
