I'd hire Donnie Kelly to manage over Ausmus right now.

Selling Kinsler interests me if they can get talent in return (rather than a straight salary dump) because I think Machado has a chance to be an every day guy at 2b and because the $15ish million we'd save could go towards some arms this offseason. I'd listen on Anibal, too. I wouldn't deal either if I wasn't getting a solid return, but I think they should be listening on everyone at this point.

At the very least, they need to be open to a number of options. One of those options is keeping most of these guys if they don't get a good return for them.

Thinking out loud here. Who are the only people we don't consider trading at this point? Miggy, JD, Victor, Iggy?

Anibal is a front end starter with a good contact. If you deal him and the goal is to contend next summer, we'd end up paying more for the same type of pitcher. I'd add him to the list, only because I don't see a possible return that would warrant trading him.

Just out of curiosity, why do you guys have VMart on the untradeable list? He's 36 and has been injured a hell of a lot the past few years.

I'd be willing to discuss Anibal, but I don't think he'd bring a good return at this point after the season he's had. It's probably not worth it.

Realistically, we should be willing to discuss anyone but Cabrera (who has a no-trade and most teams wouldn't want, anyway, given his contract). Anyone else you listen on because they aren't good enough to hang up the phone when someone calls.

This, too. Given the money owed, if someone called DD and offered to take on that deal without giving up anything in terms of talent, I think we would need to consider it if we're truly "selling" here. With JD Martinez showing last year wasn't a fluke, they could do better with the $17m a year he's getting the next 3 years.

Honestly for me....when he is healthy, I think he bring good value in both production and leadership. Just my opinion though.

Soria is on the wrong side of 31 and his effective seems to be slipping, even though his velocity is back up. I'd probably trade him, but he might have a few more effective years. I wouldn't give him 4 years at $40M, which is what he'll probably be asking for.

So Kinsler is still a top 10 second baseman in terms of WAR. He was 3rd last year. His contact goes from $16M this year to $14M next year, then $11M in '17 and $10M (or a $5M buyout) in '18. Granted he's 33, so I'm not sure he's tradeable or somebody we might as well ride into decline for 3 more less expensive years while using Machado as trade bait.

Then again, I'd trade him and rely on Machado at 2B next year without many qualms.

In a full tear down, you certainly trade Victor. But he's a lineup anchor if you are trying to maximize this shortening window with Miggy.

Soria has a FIP of 4.91 and is allowing 20% of the balls hit in the air against him to go for HR. If we move Price and someone offers us anything in return for Soria, we should move him. I'm not sure what people would trade for him, though, given the way he's looked the last few months.

I think your second sentence is dependent on whether they would take that money and invest it back into the club in FA. If they just dumped that money and sat on it, dealing him to dump salary doesn't make much sense. If they now had $15-20m they could spend on another starting pitcher or a more well-rounded every day player, I think it's worth it.

Also means that no team who trades for him at deadline can do so with any hope of resigning him. So he is a short term rental at best. Seems like a limitation on his value.

Yeah, why in god's name would Price ink an extension now with some third party team? I guess maybe a big market team could just be like here's 7/210, will you take it, and maybe he does if he likes the situation, but that seems odd. And as a fan of one of those teams, I'm not sure I'd give up appreciably more to do that, the money will be in the offseason too.

So basically teams would try to do in 48 hours what they could do over the next 12 weeks so the can give the Tigers more prospects?

You want David Price? Better send Tigers MLB-ready starter in return

As the baseball industry readies for the possibility that Detroit Tigers ace David Price will become available on the trade market -- which could occur as early as Sunday or Monday -- here are two key details to remember:

*The Tigers aren't necessarily opposed to granting a 48-hour window during which the acquiring team could negotiate a contract extension with Price, a free agent after this season. While such windows are rare in Major League Baseball trades, a high-ranking Tigers official said the team has no policy against them. (The added years of control could increase the caliber of players the Tigers receive in return.)

*Sources say the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs have interest in Price. To obtain the left-hander, a team almost certainly would need to surrender a pitcher who fits into the Tigers' 2016 rotation.

The Tigers boasted one of the most dominant pitching staffs in baseball history as recently as 2013, when their 1,428 strikeouts set what was then a single-season major-league record. Now pitching has become the Tigers' most glaring weakness.

Price and fellow starter Alfredo Simon are eligible for free agency after this season, leaving Anibal Sanchez and Justin Verlander -- both of whom have struggled in 2015 -- as the top returning pitchers.

Consider this frightening statistic: The Detroit starters under contract or control for 2016 have combined to win only 18 games in the majors this year. (That group includes the perplexing Shane Greene and injured Kyle Lobstein, as well as Kyle Ryan and Buck Farmer, both of whom have returned to the minor leagues.)

In that sense, the Dodgers, Giants and Blue Jays offer the best trade fits for Detroit. By contrast, the top pitchers in the Cubs' system have had disappointing seasons: right-hander C.J. Edwards has moved to the bullpen because of serious control problems, and right-hander Duane Underwood has been on the disabled list since late June.

The Dodgers are said to be highly reluctant to move left-hander Julio Urias, but Double-A right-hander Jose De Leon should be ready to join a major-league rotation by next year.

The Giants, meanwhile, have a number of pitching prospects who could be major-league-ready by next year: Tyler Beede, Joe Biagini and Kelvin Marte at Double-A and Keury Mella at high Class A.

And while the Blue Jays appear unlikely to trade the injured Marcus Stroman in any deal -- he's out for the season after knee surgery -- they have pitching prospects Daniel Norris and Jeff Hoffman in the upper minors

I mean, let's say the Dodgers are the team with the best offer (seems likely at this point). Let's also say they're the most likely to want to talk extension before pulling the trigger (again, seems likely).

Urias still isn't in that deal. De Leon is still the top piece in any offer. Maybe they kick in someone like Holmes or Anderson instead of Zack Lee (just throwing names around), but that difference isn't some jaw-dropping thing.

Norris or Hoffman would both be worthwhile trade returns for Price at this point. I might prefer Hoffman just because Norris' lack of command scares me. The problem is I don't see what Toronto's motivation to do that deal is, though. They're in the same boat we're in, so why give up that much for 2 months of a guy you can't resign?

If Price is dealt, I'd be surprised if it wasn't to LA. It's the best match in a variety of ways. If they hold out until the last day, though, they risk LA moving on another starter like Cueto or Hamels.

The Reds supposedly almost dealt Cueto to KC tonight before it was nixed because of an injury to one of the KC prospects in the deal. Would have been nice to see that deal set the market to know what to expect with Price. Also would have taken an option away from teams like Toronto and LA.

I wonder what the Cubs would offer - they have the money to pay Price and have a stockpile of position guys. They don't really have the pitching prospects, so the best bet they'll ever have for a rotation is in free agency, and Maddon gives them the leg up to sign Price. We'd have to hit the market for a starter in the offseason, because they don't have anybody we can pencil into the rotation, but they might be able to help stock the farm.

I think the Cubs could offer something solid if they wanted, but I think we would prefer a package led by a starting pitcher who can be in the rotation by the ASB next summer. Chicago doesn't really have that.

We'd prefer that, of course, and that would be a Dave thing to do - trade for a need instead of maximum value. In this day and age is somebody giving up a potential front line starter with a 2016 ETA for a rental, even if it's Price? We gave up a guy with a #3 ceiling who was already in the majors and a solid ss in AA when Price had 1 year plus left.

In this case, if the Dodgers are as interested as people are suggesting, I'm not sure what package Chicago would be willing to put together that would top LA's. Seems like best case scenario there would be maybe Addison Russell, and that seems like a huge stretch. Otherwise, you're talking guys like Javier Baez, Billy McKinney or maybe Albert Almora. They're all interesting, but not really any better than someone like De Leon from LA or either of the top guys from Toronto.

Need to start fielding offers before Hamels goes. Best value will be sometime today or tomorrow before Price's Tuesday start. If Dave needs to see Shane Greene shit the bed on national television tonight before he can safely trade Price, he's wasting time.

I'm honestly afraid that Verlander's good outing (in his continuing good outing/bad outing season) and Simon getting picked up by the defense yesterday has Dave convinced all we need is another starter and a another bullpen arm, because at this point emptying out what's left in the system still isn't going to get us anything more than a mediocre return.

so Finnegan was part of deal. Royals # 2 prospect entering the season. Had decent numbers before being sent down to AAA. #55 prospect in all of baseball.

Manaea is rumored to be involved too. #81 prospect in baseball. So they got 2 top 100 prospects, and a 25 year old lefty from AAA. Not a bad haul

I mean DD has made chicken salad out of chicken shit before, but I don't see how we could reasonable expect to acquire the players it would take to get us over the hump. Thankfully any deal he were to make wouldn't set us back any further from a prospect perspective.
