From Mark Anderson this morning. I'm not sure I completely understand this thing with Mize of "we don't like your medicals, but would still pick you #1 overall if you sign for a very small discount": I've hunkered down the last few days and gotten some dirt.... They're still on Mize, but they're being cautious and starting to get wary; mostly due to medicals. From what I understand, they aren't going to be willing to go all the way to full slot with what they see in his medicals, and if he doesn't budget off that number, they're prepared to go another direction. I don't get the impression he has to come in way under slot for this to work out, but he would probably have to shave at least $750k off his stance to make the Tigers pull the trigger. If they can't get there with Mize, it will likely come down to Kelenic, Singer, and Bart. They're reportedly very split internally on Bart's long-term potential. There are some in the organization that believe they can find similar catching value in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds with other experienced college guys like they've done in the past with Greiner, McCann, Morgan, etc. I would be mildly surprised if Bart was the guy. Singer is very much on the radar and they think he moves quickly. Kelenic would have a sizeable haircut on his bonus demands and the Tigers would have to believe they have the ability to spread that money around effectively. They don't want to be left holding the bag of bonus money without the "right" guys to throw the money at later in the draft. I think they're still tracking on Mize as the guy at 1-1 right now, but its going to come down to how far he moves off the full slot number once they really start talking about bonus and medicals.
Finally, Matt Manning had another really good outing in WM yesterday. In his last three starts, he's had: 17 IP, 3 R, 12 H, 25 K, 5 BB I could see him getting pushed to Lakeland soon. He probably needs to go somewhere that will make him work instead of just blowing people away (which he's clearly doing in WM, even if the velo isn't all the way up to what they were hoping on every pitch).
Cameron hit 2 HR tonight. Would be nice to see him start hitting for more power and/or strike out less.
I really like hearing Kiley's perspective of how front offices work, like in the most recent podcast how you can tell a ceiling and floor for most players in the draft based on what execs from what clubs have seen them in person.
I've watched it once. They covered the OSU/Alabama Sugar Bowl...with Booger, Finebaum and Greg McElroy watching the game from the SEC Network studio. It was a pretty incredible watch.
He survives yet another roste move. We have got to have the worst front offices in baseball. At best this kid projects as a 4th OF, you can find those anywhere. The Diamondbacks don’t want him back, we should just trade some shitty prospect to them for him.
Yeah, good luck with that. They’re still trying to win. Maybe he will play after the deadline. What are you hearing on Mize? Still the choice, even after he has sucked past month?
1. I hear nothing. I just read stuff. Don't want people to think I'm some insider (or that I think I'm an insider) 2. I don't think Mize has sucked. He just hasn't been quite as dominant. I don't think his late performance matters, either way. No one else comes close to his combination of talent/performance to date. If someone was close, we probably would be taking that person. 3. Most people think we're still taking Mize, barring something in his medicals that would ultimately make us pass. One person on the TigsTown board who swears he has sources with the Tigers when it comes to the draft says we've already decided to take Mize and it will be for at or close to full slot, for whatever that's worth.
only the Tigers would sign him to full slot. Max they better spend on him is $7.5MM. No player has ever signed for slot, and Mize is definitely not the first one to deserve it. He goes 4-5th overall in most years.
It doesn't matter where he would go other years. Only matters where he'll go this year. And if he's healthy, he's clearly #1 in this draft according to pretty much every person in the sport. Royce Lewis took a little over $1M under slot last year at #1, but each of the next seven picks all got at least the slot bonus, and several went way over. Brendan McKay and Kyle Wright went 4 and 5 last year and got $850k and $1.3M over, respectively, at around $7M total (both more than Lewis).
I was referring to #1 picks. No #1 overall has got slot value under new system. How does it work if a player doesn't sign? Do we have to offer him the max slot value? Be nice if we low ball him and offer him $7MM. He doesn't sign we get the #2 pick next year, in a most likely deeper draft.
Castellanos is going to present an interesting decision for them. He's hitting .333/.380/.522 (granted, he's got a .407 BABIP, but he also has a career low K rate that has dropped significantly from his early years). He at least seems playable in RF. He'll hit FA after next year and turns 28 right before the 2020 season. I'm not sure what he's worth on a trade market that completely ignored bats last year, and he's of an age where he might be worth keeping long term. I'm not sure what the price tag will be, and I don't think he's going to be very interested in an extension considering he's a union rep and we're going to suck the next 1.5 years.
Also, I think there are more teams that might be interested in hitters this year at the deadline, which is when we would really need to move him to maximize his value. Possibility of teams like Philly, Oakland, Arizona, Colorado and others all looking for hitters at some point.
Still would rather have Kelenic or Madrigal, but whatever. We need pitching, and he’s probably better future than the prospects we have in our system.
What are the chances we release Victor when Miggy comes back? I know they aren’t high but it’s stupid to give Victor ABs when Hicks has earned more time.
With this front office? 0% They still have Victor Reyes on the 25 man roster. Kozma will get sent down.
Reyes' wRC+ jumped from -23 to 31 after today. I was unaware that -23 was possible prior to looking it up.
Really thorough mock draft with scenarios for a lot of teams beyond round one. Also explains why Mize isn't going to take much of a discount, and what Philly could do to hypothetically make us more uncomfortable in taking him. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2018-mlb-mock-draft-v-3-0/
Also, while Gardenhire has some old school stuff he does that are annoying (like keeping VMart in the 4 hole), he's batting a top three of Candelario/Castellanos/Miggy tonight. That hire seems to be going reasonably well to this point.
You’re telling me if we offer him $7.2MM ($800k) below slot, he won’t take it? If he doesn’t sign, he’s basically banking on being the #1 pick in the draft next year. We won’t take him at #2 again. No way in hell should we sign him anywhere close to slot.
