I'm starting to have delusions that Gipson-Long could be a reasonably solid #4 quality starter on a team that challenges MIN within two years.

This K-rate at three levels this year can play, but the HR/9 is pretty scary. Extreme flyball pitcher in MLB so far, but his MLB exit velocity so far is very good in the dreaded small sample. If he's rotation depth going forward, that's a nice win for the development staff:
    upload_2023-9-29_20-19-30.png

I have no expectations Mize will ever contribute anything going-forward.

Watched Miggy with my dad in College, kind of cool watching his last game with my son. Wish I would have made the drive to take him, but he's too young to understand or really even get through a game

Way off on the Miggy last game, although I only missed the OPS by .010. Also way off on Maton's HR (8) and Tork's OPS (.749). Flores was hurt but probably wouldn't have been called up anyway. Manning's ERA was also somehow only 3.58 despite awful peripherals.

Only one off on the W prediction and close on Tork's HR (31). Close on starting pitchers (17). Attendance ended up around 21k per, which is kind of surprising even if it's still 25th in the league. Schoop also got DFAd, finally, even though he probably wasn't first.

Fun game. Would play again next season.

Well the team better be good next year, because they can't rely on Miggy chasing 500 or 3000 or Miggy last season to sell tickets anymore. Fans have shown they'll still show up if you give them a reason to but attendance was sad when they weren't promoting miggy.

Have the Tigers gifting Miggy custom cleats that their FB and other social media has described by made of "significant baseballs from his career" yet are actually made of $3 Walmart baseballs been discussed yet (look at swooshes)

Time for me to go full DeToxRox/Red Wings here looking at the roster going into the offseason.

    Position player groupings...

    Definitely back and starting somewhere:

    Torkelson (1B)
    Baez (2B/SS)
    Greene (OF)
    Carpenter (OF/DH)

Probably back in some kind of role (starter or platoon):

    Rogers (C)
    P. Meadows (CF)
    Vierling (UTIL)

Either traded, off the 40 man or playing for a job in spring:

    Ibanez (UTIL)
    McKinstry (UTIL)
    Kelly (C)
    Short (UTIL)
    Baddoo (OF)
    Nevin (1B/3B)
    Lipcius (IF)
    Kreidler (SS/3B)
    Maton (UTIL)

Prospects with a chance to win a job in the spring:

    Keith (3B/2B)
    Jung (2B)
    Malloy (OF/3B/DH)

    Pitcher groupings...

    Definitely in the rotation/bullpen:

    Skubal (SP)
    Olson (SP)
    Foley (RP)
    Holton (RP)
    Vest (RP)
    Lange (RP)

Will compete for some kind of spot:

    Manning (RHP)
    Mize (RHP)
    Gipson-Long (RHP)
    Faedo (RHP)
    Brieske (RHP)
    Diaz (RHP)

    Probably gone:

    Rodriguez (LHP)
    Turnbull (RHP)
    Wentz (LHP)
    Boyd (LHP)
    Cisnero (RHP)

I think we're signing a pitcher this offseason regardless of what Rodriguez does. And I don't know what I want Rodriguez to do at this point.

I assume you left out Ohtani because he’s already decided he’s coming to Detroit?

Yamamoto seems like an amazing gamble but I cannot envision a world where he comes here to compete with Ohtani.

I left out Ohtani because he's not coming here and because he's not pitching next year due to a second TJ surgery.

The press conference from Harris today definitely did not make me think we're going out and spending a ton this year. Think it's going to be another season with moves on the margins with the exception of possibly a starting pitcher they think they can bank on for 180+ competent innings.

Assuming Rodriguez comes off, we are losing $46 mil off of what is already only the 20th highest payroll in the league. Not to mention $10 m from Boyd and $13 mil retained from Lorenzen and Schoop. They gotta spend some money

I agree, although this FA class is awful and I'm not sure there's a player out there I'd want to win a bidding war for.

Our arb eligible guys this year are...

    Austin Meadows (3rd year)
    Spencer Turnbull (3rd)
    Tyler Alexander (2nd)
    Trey Wingenter (2nd)
    Tarik Skubal (1st)
    Casey Mize (1st)
    Jake Rogers (1st)
    Miguel Diaz (1st)

That's maybe $10-12M total for all of the ones we choose to keep. I think there's a decent chance that list only includes Alexander, Skubal, Mize and Rogers.

Baez is the only current guaranteed contract on the books if Rodriguez opts out.

Evan Petzold's story for Freep says Dickerson is not leaving radio, and also makes it sound like they're actually going to look for a national name with some experience instead of the sham search last time. I have some doubts, but it would be really nice if they got someone I could at least listen to as background noise nightly in the summer instead of only being able to watch on mute.

Arizona Fall League is underway. Jobe started. Baseball America devoted most of their daily report to Jobe:

Arizona Fall League Prospect Report: Jackson Jobe Shines In Debut
    October 3, 2023

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—In his second full season as a professional, Tigers righthander Jackson Jobe was limited to just 64 innings thanks to a back injury that delayed his 2023 debut until June 17, when he made a tune-up start in the Florida Complex League.

From there, he quickly shot from Low-A to Double-A by season’s end, including turns in the playoffs for the Eastern League champion Erie SeaWolves. At each stop, the righthander overpowered hitters with an arsenal that combines both power and spin.

He finished the year with an overall 70% strike rate, including 54 walks against just three walks in 40 High-A innings. Jobe’s command and control weren’t as pinpoint as usual in his AFL debut—he threw 31 of his 55 pitches for strikes—but he still spun four shutout innings with two hits, two walks and four strikeouts for Salt River on the league’s Opening Day.

Throughout the evening, Jobe, whom Detroit popped in the first round of the 2021 draft out of high school in Oklahoma, used a four-pitch mix that showed flashes of dominance.

The full repertoire included a four-seam fastball that averaged 96 mph and peaked at 98 and also included a nasty cutter in the low-90s, a sweepy slider in the mid 80s with an average spin rate of more than 3,000 rpm and a mid-80s changeup.

Jobe got nine swings and misses—three apiece on the four-seam fastball and slider, two on the changeup and one of the cutter—good for a 16.3% whiff rate. All four of Jobe’s strikeouts were finished by swings and misses.

Jobe also did a good job inducing weak contact, getting five grounders against just two flyouts. Arguably the biggest mistake he made came in the fourth inning, when he allowed a ringing double to White Sox prospect Bryan Ramos on a poorly located fastball just a pitch after getting Ramos to wave through two consecutive sliders.

Even though he didn’t display the same precision as he did during the regular season—and the tighter strike zone in play thanks to the automatic ball-strike challenge system at Salt River Fields might have been a factor—Jobe’s first turn in the AFL contained plenty of moments when it was easy to see why his ceiling is so high.
