Look who this regime has picked in later rounds. I dont give a shit about saving money, get the best player at 3 because whoever we take after will probably not pan out
I kind of respect the fact that, for the first time since he's been GM, they actually stuck their neck out and did something other than what people said they should. I'm very concerned about the fact that, by all accounts, they were on Mayer all year and decided after a month of both guys not playing anymore to pick someone else they fell more in love with.
It seems like we have been linked to that prep SS from Maryland the last few days. Is that where the savings are going?
Part of the reason they've gotten nothing out of the later rounds is they have consistently taken college bats with no upside or college arms who aren't likely to develop into anything other than relievers beyond the first round. If they actually use the money to chase higher upside guys with the 32nd pick and tomorrow, that might improve that. But they have to effectively scout and draft the right players, and I'm as skeptical as anyone of their ability to do that.
I don't think he's a well over slot guy for the comp round or round 2. I think one name to remember could be Andrew Painter, the consensus second-best HS RHP who some people think could go anywhere from 13 to the comp round tonight. I've seen him linked to us in a few places.
I like the idea of taking another prep RHP, that way if Jobe’s arm blows out, we can lop off Painter’s and attach it to Jobe.
Avila decided Zach Short is the answer at short. He's even got the name! I actually don't mind if they love Jobe that much, but if they like Mayer better and picked Jobe for slot reasons, they're fucking stupid.
Man fuck this team, lucked into Torkelson and Mize at #1 because you couldn't take anyone else and lucked into Riley Greene because he played on their scouts son's team. This team can't do shit right. All their other picks and signings lately have been awful. It's amazing Avila is still employed.
Lol Law Royals supply first big surprise of MLB Draft with pick of Mozzicato By Keith Law July 11, 2021 at 7:57 PM EDT I am flabbergasted. I like Mozzicato quite a bit. I saw him pitch in May, not his best stuff, but a plus curveball, projection, feel, good command, athleticism ... but he was 86-90, and we do not have the history with him that we have with so many other guys in the class. He's touched 94 but doesn't sit there. Mozzicato is a prospect, a good one, but considering who else is on the board right now ... this has to be some kind of money-saving move, as with the Orioles and Cowser, because Mozzicato was maybe a fringe first rounder if you line him up against everyone else in the class.
Law on the pick The Tigers taking Jobe isn't a shock -- he and Mayer were the two names most linked to the Tigers all spring -- and he is far and away the best high school pitcher in this year's draft class. It's a huge risk, though; I've written before that high school pitchers taken in the first round fail to reach the majors or become more than replacement-level players at a higher rate than any other class. The Tigers' two big recent draft-and-development success stories on the pitching side were both college guys -- Casey Mize (Auburn) and Tarik Skubal (Seattle). Matt Manning hasn't broken through yet, and Jacob Turner never panned out despite incredible velocity. Jobe has big velocity of his own, elite spin rates and athleticism on his side.
I have no clue. Part of the problem with thinking you're going to get guys over slot is we're not the only team doing that. Pittsburgh took Davis for what is likely way under slot. Baltimore went way under slot at 5. KC and Colorado likely went well under slot at 7 and 8. That's part of the risk of that scenario. I could see us going college guys at 32 and 39, and then using the Jobe savings in round 3-7 on a couple HS kids or tougher college signs.
true but we pick again before Pittsburgh, and all those other teams. We can probably sign a guy for like $5 million at 32 if we really wanted to.
They could have promised Hoglund or Hill a ton of money and take them with 32 or 39, too. We've never taken a guy who just had TJ before, to my knowledge, but those guys might be as likely as any in terms of over slot options.
The mock draft guys have said pretty much everyone in the 20s love him so I doubt he gets to us at 32, but Tyler Black is a kid I would really like for us with that pick.
I mean, if we're penciling Jobe into the 2023 rotation, we might as well call up Black for this September.
Two potential overslot HS kids are Will Taylor (OF) and Bubba Chandler (RHP), who are both Clemson football commits. I don't think we're going to do that with this pick, though. I expect us to take a college kid.
Both the Clemson kids are 3* recruits and the lowest ranked guys in that class. Don't know if that matters.
19. Ty Madden, RHP, Texas Madden is a big, strong Texas righty who is up to 99 mph with a plus slider, but the third pitch and bat-missing qualities of his fastball make him more of a project than you'd like out of the college ranks.
There was some pre-draft chatter about us and that Tyler Black, the Wright State 2B. I think from the Athletic guys.
The ESPN rankings like him more than others: Tyler Black Scouting Report Height: 6′ 2″ | Weight: 190 Bats: Left | Throws: Right | Position: 2B Highest Ranking: 18th (ESPN) Tyler Black is rated 18th in the draft by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. But he’s also rated outside of the top 50 by both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline (still in the top 100 in both places, though). A big freshman season put Tyler Black on the map. He hit .353/.469/.600 with 38 walks and 18 strikeouts in 52 games for the Raiders. In 13 games as a sophomore in 2020 he got out to a slow start and had just a .709 OPS before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic. In 2021 he came back with a vengeance and tore up the Horizon League as he hit 14 doubles, a triple, and had 13 home runs with 39 walks, and 25 strikeouts in 48 games to go along with an OPS of 1.179. Teams that really believe in the bat will have him rated higher on their boards than teams who just think he’s a solid to good hitter. He’s a second baseman long term, though he has some experience at third base – his arm just isn’t the typical corner arm. With fringy-average speed and average power in the future on his scouting report there’s a lot riding on his ability to hit for a quality average and maintain a good walk rate because he’s not going to stick out in the field or on the bases. Still, there’s some safety there – but perhaps not a lot of big upside.
ESPN: 16. Tyler Black, 2B, Wright State My pick to click is a late-blooming, mid-major, Canadian second baseman with a spotless track record and power potential. Get on the bandwagon while you still can.
Of course Avila uses the MLB pipeline rankings to make his #2 pick. Why couldn’t he do that with Mayer?
