Just skimming through the replay of the game today. The Twins are terrible no doubt, but Greene is just mowing them down. Looks remarkably like Porcello physically.
he thanked the low clouds for making Detroit look the best he's ever seen on Twitter and when people started reacting he said something along the lines of "I guess you guys haven't seen how ugly your downtown is"
I read the twitter outrage after Blyleven said it. Then I read he told Detroit people they can fuck themselves. Then, about an inning or two later, he gave this weird apology in the middle of the broadcast. It was odd. I figured he hated Detroit because it's one of the road cities he rarely seems to do games in on Twins broadcasts. He must get a certain number of dates off and generally takes them when they play in Detroit. He and the play by play guy definitely needed some hugs the last 3 games. They're huge homers and they were pretty subdued calling those games. In fairness, it has to suck to watch something like that and know you're going to spending the next 6 months following a train wreck.
The team and station publicly spanked him and made him apologize, which he did as cuntily as possible.
He is so lame. Bert Blyleven @BertBlyleven28 · 17h17 hours ago I apologize for my comments: the city of Detroit. It is an exciting time here led by the Ilitch family.
Blyleven is a sack of shit. Always has been. Doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame over Jack Morris.
Any new update on Victor? Not the worst timing for him to rest heading into an NL stadium for 2 games and then an off day.
We need a new Lions thread. Somebody who is good with punny thread titles needs to start one. DeToxRox? Celemo? One of the Spartandawgs?
They expect him in the lineup today. But agreed that the NL break is well-timed. I expect 4 seasons of tweaks, grimaces and limps. Victor is never going to have good legs under him. With occasional breaks, it doesn't seem to hurt him much.
Jason Beck @beckjason 37s37 seconds ago Victor Martinez running bases during batting practice. Seems to be no more hobbled than usual. He's in Tigers lineup.
Jordan Bastian @MLBastian 4m4 minutes ago Miggy just doubled to the wall in CF. He's now 11-for-14 (.786) in this series against the Indians.
That first week went well. Nice to see Nesbit recover from a bad start and get through 2 innings, too. Would be nice if he became a thing this year.
Can't expect Iglesias and Gose to do anything like what they're doing, but if those two guys just put the ball in play consistently and run like jackrabbits, this offense will be formidable.
Realistically, none of these guys are going to keep up this pace. With Gose, you're right about the ball in play. He's always struck out a lot, and he'll never make it unless he changes that. Iglesias has a swing to do that, and hopefully he can become something like Omar Infante in that regard.
I was wondering yesterday what Gose's defense is worth. It was all on display yesterday. He's got that smooth gliding speed and covered balls in the deep alley both sides, as well as a nice diving catch coming in. And he's already shown a plus arm. Small sample applies, and I know defensive metrics are still a developing science. Is he a 3 WAR guy just for his glove?
I was about to take a shit in between innings before I realized he was leading off. Thought to myself, lets just wait a minute and see what he does. Smart move.
That's really unlikely to be a 3 fWAR guy just on defense. There were 3 CFs in all of baseball last season who were worth more than 1 win just on defense. 1 CF was worth 2 wins. No player in the league was worth 3 wins on defense alone. He has the talent to be well above average defensively. Possibly elite. If he can be worth more than 1 win just on defense, that means he can be below average at the plate and still be an average or better CF. If we get that for a couple years out of him in CF, I would imagine they would be absolutely thrilled. I think "below average at the plate" would be a pretty nice improvement from him, considering what he was in Toronto.
