JD Martinez is now up to .270/.331/.489 with 13 HR. He's had some struggles this year, but seems like we couldn't have asked for much more from him to back up last season. And is Anibal good again? Because that would be awesome.
I can't think of anybody I wouldn't part with, really. Moya? Eh. I like Dixon Machado, but he's a 2B and we probably have more of them (and Kinsler through '18). I'd like to keep Hill, but maybe Gose has found his PCL '12 form and that's more indicative of what he is than the past 2 years. Not a single pitcher I consider untouchable.
Revivals from JD and Anibal and a return of healthy Victor coul really made some shit happen. Add merely solid JV and the rotation works.
OTOH we should probably be anticipating the unavoidable meltdown of Simon. He can't be this good. OTOOH maybe Greene will get a Scherzer tuneup in Toledo and come back solid.
Decent chance Greene and Simon swap places in the second half, although I think Simon will still be a servicable 5th and not a total waste. Of course, Cueto meanbs it doesn't matter - Greene to the 'pen and Simon the 5th starter.
I would assume the lack of good prospects means someone else gets Cueto rather than that we get him for a bag of balls. I just hope it's not KC.
I know he's just a spot start, but there has got to be a better option in our farm system then Buck. Just brutal every time he pitches at this level ...
Tony Paulβ@TonyPaul1984 Frustration in #Tigers clubhouse. Kinsler on fans: "If they want to root for someone else that they think is more consistent, that's fine."
So glad Ausmus pinch ran for V-Mart after a two-out single in the 9th. Definitely didn't need him when the bases were loaded at the end of the game.
tough game, but optimistic about the pen's development. Wilson, Hardy, Rondon, Soria seem ike a pretty good 7th-through-9th inning group, with AlAl still lurking. deadline deal for another lefty arm would be nice. time to put Joba out to pasture though, he's just brutal ...
Fuck this. They're in a bad spot, given how short term the roster is, but I don't think you can make all in trades for rentals with Miggy missing this much time. I could understand deals for guys with more control, though. Also think you have to at least entertain the idea of moving Price. Don't need to shop him around and deal him for whatever, but you have to listen starting now because other teams are going to be calling. I'd do the same with Kinsler, although I'm not sure what his value is at this point.
i'm such a homer that i think hot JD/VMart will keep us in the race. i wonder if there's a 3B that would make sense in a trade an not kill us. punt the rest of the year on Casty ...
Agreed. Until yesterday I was assuming we'd be looking to ransom something for a rental starter. Now I pray we don't. At least do nothing, at best move some short-term assets if the return is good.
Meh. We're struggling to be a 500 team with Miggy having a peak Miggy year. Can't see us hanging in this race with that hole in the lineup
In a season full of disappointments to this point, Castellanos is #1 for me. I really don't get how someone with his hitting pedigree in the minors has been so awful at the plate.
I think it might be Gorzelany for me. I thought he would be a solid, reliable LH piece to stabilize the pen. Never think you know what a reliever will do. The Greene meltdown hurt too, though I didn't have real expectations there.
what's the deal with Greene? and Lobstein? scary that either of those guys might be able to give our rotation a jumpstart ...
I'd like to see Cespedes resigned, and J.D. locked up. Two middle-order bats and plus defenders in the corners and they can afford Gose's weak bat for the speed and defense in the middle. If they can move Kinsler and use the money to chase pitching then great.
Cespedes is solid, but I'm not overpaying him if someone wants to pay him like a star. If I'm spending upwards of $20m on a corner OF this winter, I'm calling Jason Heyward first.
As disappointing as a lot of guys have been, JD Martinez has been awesome. Slash line up to .286/.341/.559 and on pace for 44 HR. I didn't think there was any way he'd match last year's #s, and he's on pace to exceed them. Only reason he might fall short in some of the categories is that his BABIP has normalized from the .389 he posted last year.
Better hitter (because Cespedes doesn't get on base). Better fielder (not really close). Better baserunner (somewhat close). 4 years younger with more upside moving forward.
Yeah I just checked his stats this year. Started off dreadful but picking it up it seems. Idk, I'd take Cespedes' power and very good D ...
Is Mike Hessman still in the system? I'd like to see him come up and Chris Shelton for 4-5 weeks, please.
Verlander This upcoming week should seal the Tigers fate as sellers at the deadline. Tigers only have Price/Sanchez pitching once this week. With Ryan/Simon making 4 of the starts. Go 1-6, 2-5, and Tigers will be at least 9 games out of 1st, and probably 4-5 out of Wild Card. Best thing would be getting something of value for Price/Cespedes/Soria. We won't get a draft pick for Cespedes or Soria. And the pick for Price will be in the 30's, and it's not like the scouting department on this team can draft.
Verlander is back, guys. Just gave up a run on some cheapies in the 8th, but was really good before that. Velo was up as high as 97 when I was watching. Nothing to worry about anymore.
I fully expect JV to be a serviceable or better MLB starter for years to come. Never really doubted that. He'll never merit the contract $$, but what were the odds he would?
Was listening in the car, Dickerson's reaction was amazing. Last year exactly 0 teams lost games in the 1100+ instances they had leads of 5 or more heading into the 9th. Of course Ausmus left Verlander in to long, causing him to misuse Rondon and bring in Soria cold. He's a shithead.
