Would be curious how Dingler looks defensively at this stage. I think he's still relatively new to catching. I'm hoping last summer being on the 60-man roster helped him there working with more experienced guys and pitchers with better stuff.
Fangraph mock (the SS’s go 1-2) 3. Detroit Tigers Pick: Brady House, SS, Winder-Barrow HS (GA) EL: The Tigers were five scouts deep, including GM Al Avila, at one of Texas high schooler Jackson Jobe’s starts a couple of weeks ago. A couple of my sources speculated that this regime’s behavior will be influenced by the need to show big league results soon, and that that points to Davis or an amenable Leiter. Henry Davis has a lot of overlap with Spencer Torkelson and/or Dillon Dingler. Making draft decisions based on who is already in your system feels like a bad idea but so does making one based on pressure for the big club to perform soon. Georgia high schooler Brady House has a Riley Greenevibe to him: a corner defensive fit, but clear big league physicality and a long track record of performance. Detroit was also heavy in Nashville over the weekend to see Kumar Rocker and Leiter, who both shoved. KG: This one feels like the first wild card, but House provides a high school bat who some scouts have put the rare combo of plus bat/plus power on. Davis is in the mix here as well, as would be Mayer or Lawlar if one is still on the board.
Has there been any talk on what the Tigers will want to move Boyd? Cubs need another arm for the rotation and we don't have a good enough squad or the prospects to sell out for someone like Scherzer or Kyle Gibson. Boyd seems like a logical fit for us.
I thought for a while that this FO would take a college guy who might be quicker to the big leagues, but at this point the only names they've really been tied to are Mayer, Lawlar, House and Jobe. Everything else has been speculation based on either past preferences or thinking Avila is on the hot seat (other than the note that they were in Nashville last weekend). I also don't think we'd pass on Davis because of Torkelson and Dingler. I think we'll pass on Davis because this front office just doesn't value that skill set enough. We've seen that over and over again the last 5 years.
Fuck Ilitch if he allows the GM’s desire to save his own ass over what’s best for the franchise. Hell, he has examples right there in detroit he can point to. See the Lions 3rd overall selection last year and van gundy’s Griffin trade to see how dumb that is.
I don’t want Jobe, as high school pitchers like that don’t have a great track record of succeeding in the majors (and he’s old for a high school). I’d be okay with Davis, Leiter, Mayer, Lawlar, or House. Avila probably thinks Dingler is the next Joe Mauer, so he probably won’t take Davis.
Be hard to pass on Leiter if he’s available given success rate of Vandy pitchers. And he seems to have the best stuff among the most recent selections.
Manning starts tomorrow. I think the move they make will depend on how that goes. Al hates making 40 man moves.
Its not like anybody will claim the guy we drop. They will need a starter for Friday and now Saturday at this point. If Manning pitches tomorrow, he will be unavailable for for both those games.
Torkelson playing 3b. Lester seems to be one of better hitters in Erie, so he may see more time at 3b now with Lester at 1b
It's only $40 for a full season of milb. That actually isn't awful. I may have to consider that and watch a few games in erie
Of course I’m coming home to Michigan for the first time in 18 months and I miss the chance to see this ugh!
Ump stopped Mize walking off the mound. I noticed he hasn’t touched his hair like he always used to between pitches.
