These were the days.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Rod and Mario
I was at the game. Think I've only been to one game since. Have zero interest in going to pay to watch this current team
I’m actually rooting for Demeritte. Seems like a great kid. Can’t be much worse than Christian Stewart.
He’s the next JD Martinez
Being honest, I think there's a fairly good chance he can be the next Niko Goodrum, which isn't great (or good, really) but it's probably as good as they were going to do for a second piece in a Greene trade, given the market.
And I'm now realizing I just compared two black baseball players to each other and now I feel bad.
I doubt he ever sees the IF, but who knows.
And Avila is going to have a lot of explaining to do if Josh Harrison takes more than 5 at bats a week in August and September. He should not be playing over Castro
I understand your premise, but no one should be upset about anyone getting ABs over Harold Castro.
When it’s a 35 year old reject who will not be on the team next year, yes it is a problem. Like it or not, Castro is probably our 2nd basemen next year
No, he's not. He might end up playing some games there, but Castro is a utility guy (at best) on an awful team. He has a wRC+ of 83 despite a .375 BABIP, and that hitting line is actually better than his minor league numbers. Even this front office won't go into 2020 with the plan of starting him at 2B.
I think You’re giving Avila too much credit. Who will we sign then? An asshole similar to Harrison?
Mercer’s only made two errors in this one game but it sure seems like he’s deserved four (I’m not kidding).
Yet we continue to play his ass at SS over Goodrum.
But mercer’s Leading the clubhouse with his veteran status -Gardy
Travis flew around those bases, cool to see
We won the trade
Is Anthony Fenech actually Vinegar Strokes
Paredes is on fire of late in Erie. First half of the season was around league average, but he's been .345/.427/.476 with only 7 Ks in 22 games since the AA all-star break.
I don't understand why haven't even tried him at 2B this season, as that seems like the position he'd have the highest ceiling at. Still, if he can ever get in shape and figure out that part, he still looks like at least an average or better big league regular at 3B.
Demeritte with 3 walks already in 5 at bats. You can tell he didn’t come up in our farm system.
Greene just blew his first save opportunity. LFG
Tell your GM to think twice before dealing with this guy again. He’s the master of trades.
Fenech took a flame thrower to Avila today. Is he just learning about all this information now? These stories would have been a lot more helpful a couple months ago before Avila got that extension, but he was on Team Avila then. Nothing has really changed since then.
Seems like Fenech was probably fed false info during the TDL and now he’s going off on Avila.
Having the worst GM in baseball and also the worst beat writer makes sense though.
You Talking about McCoskey? We already know he’s the worst
And it’s clear that Fenech won’t be back next year. He probably already has something in the works, and doesn’t give a fuck anymore.
He will probably get a job at the Athletic
From that story, one of the things that I think is most annoying is that he crushes them for what they got for Greene in the end, but also crushes them for asking the Nats for Kieboom or Garcia. Asking for Kieboom was ridiculous, but Washington's system is bad and not asking for Garcia means the best they could do is a Wentz/Demeritte level return. You can't have it both ways.
I think I can believe the Bregman part. He was just about to break out at that point and that was at a time when the industry believed Correa was a franchise guy (along with Altuve). Also, according to Fenech's story, Houston would have been getting Justin Wilson (who ended up netting Detroit a pretty good return).
Baez wasn't great at that time with the Cubs, but I don't believe the Tigers could have gotten him. Not after the Cubs had already traded Gleyber the year before. I think they definitely could have gotten at least the same Jimenez/Cease deal the White Sox got, though, and that sure sounds nice right about now.
I’d be really curious to see what Avila turned down for Boyd.
Same. I would also like to see what some of these execs complaining about the ask believe to be a reasonable return, because as much as I hate Avila, I have a feeling I would disagree with their definition of reasonable.
Someone tell Avila you can’t rebuild completely through the draft. The Cubs and Astros hit on international signings, and had success with trades. Their player development is far superior than the Tigers too. There is no end in sight for this “rebuild” that he’s doing.
Watch him package Boyd and Mize this winter for 4 impact prospect bats
Paredes hit another HR last night. He's up to a 131 wRC+ in AA as a 20 year old with a 10.9 K%. Those are big time numbers after a very mediocre first couple months (at least for him). I see a lot of questions about defense and body type/maturity whenever prospect people write about him, but at the very least it's no longer the lost season it seemed like a couple months ago.
I'd like to see them move him to AAA and see how he handles it, because I wonder if he can get himself in better shape if they're dangling the idea of him making the big league club in camp next year.
Here's my crack at the 2020 opening day roster...
SP - Zimmermann, Norris, Turnbull, Burrows, Moore
RP - Jimenez, Farmer, Garcia, Schreiber, Soto, Hardy, Funkhouser
C - Rogers, Jason Castro
IF - Smoak, Goodrum, Willi Castro, Candelario, Harold Castro
OF - Robson, Cameron, Frazier, Stewart, Demeritte
IL - Fulmer (starts in Toledo, comes up in late May-ish)
I have us dealing Boyd to NYY for Frazier and prospects, and then resigning Matt Moore to fill out the rotation while they wait on Fulmer and the kids.
I think we're more active in FA for short term position players and sign...
- a corner IF bat with some pop on a short term deal. I'm giving us Justin Smoak. Other possibilities would be Eric Thames and Matt Adams, among others.
- a vet catcher to go with Rogers and am giving us Jason Castro because he hits LH
Mize comes up in May
Paredes comes up in June
Manning, Wentz, Faedo each get chances to start starting in June/July
Skubal could pass Wentz and Faedo if his development continues.
All these guys in AA means they don't do much with the rotation and they just wait to see what they have. I could see us adding someone to put in the rotation for a couple months, though.
Wild card is whether they deal Boyd. If it doesn't happen, I could see us saying fuck it and going big on Marcell Ozuna for something in the neighborhood of 4/$80M.
What planet are you living on dude? None of that shit will happen. Mize and Manning will pitch the full year in AAA, with maybe an August or September call up. Parades will play full year in AAA.
And Illitch isn’t dishing out $80mil on an OF. We will make more shitty one year signings of washed up vets. Lose 100 + games, and get the number 1 pick again.
The only way Mize and Manning are still in the minors until August is if they get hurt. Mize will come up sometime after the super 2 date in late April. Manning sometime after that, probably, assuming reasonable performance and health.
I think they'll be active in FA this winter because Ilitch is going to push Avila to make changes at the big league level. Maybe that doesn't mean Ozuna, but I think you'll see them in the mix for some bigger names this winter.
What about Jacoby?
I think we suck ass one more season, and maybe start spending some money in 2021. Illitch doesn’t care about the Tigers.
In the scenario where we add another bat, I think Jones, Robson, Demeritte and Reyes are probably vying for 2 spots. You can throw any of them in there.
I think that's always been the plan. Wait for Zimmermann, Verlander (this year) and Fielder (next year) to come off the books and then go into FA with a young team and try to go for it again. Ilitch might not care about the Tigers as much as the Wings, but we have very little on the long term payroll and I just don't see him being an owner who is okay with fans not caring to this level about the team.
As currently constructed, even assuming a bump for Boyd in arbitration, we're probably looking at a payroll around $70-75M heading into FA. Take out the $30M to Zimmermann and Fielder after next season, and that drops into the $40M range. They could easily go for someone like Ozuna (unless the bidding is higher than I'm expecting) and make an argument it's decent business to do so.
There’s no way we sign Ozuna. We are not giving up a draft pick. He doesn’t walk, and he’s average to below average in the field. It also says something that a successful organization is just letting him walk, after giving up some decent assets to acquire him. Hard pass if you ask me.
We won the trade again?
Can't stop. Won't stop.
Big home stand coming up smeegsgreen . A ton of winnable games. Let’s hope we only go 4-6
Shane Greene has given up a 3 run homer in the 10th inning. Mean while
Take him back
