Just saw that Avila turned down an offer for Justin Wilson from the Astros revolving around Derek Fisher this past off-season. Doubt he's able to complete any trades before the deadline
yeah don't have much faith in Avila, but you can't fire him now. He should be able to get a decent prospect for Wilson though.
I think you read that wrong. The stuff I've seen is he asked for Fisher, not that he turned him down. You can draw conclusions from that however you want.
this says the Tigers rejected the offer. If a nearly major league ready top 100 position player isn't enough, I can't imagine any team meeting his asking price
Hmmm. The stuff I read from Fenech at the Freep (the article is linked in the one you posted) said the Tigers asked for Fisher and couldn't agree on a deal. If that's the report the article you posted is referencing, I think that article is incorrect. If it's based on other info, I haven't seen that reported anywhere else.
From what the insiders are saying, people expecting some massive fire sale are going to be disappointed. Doesn't sound like there's a market at all for Verlander or Kinsler right now. We'll deal JD for sure, almost certainly move Wilson, and then probably Avila if anyone will give us anything. Sounds like people are pretty riled up about the Gammons rumor last week that the Cubs called about Fulmer, as well.
Also Tigers should trade Fulmer this off season. They not winning shit next 3-4 years, and hopefully they learned their lesson and give a long extension to a pitcher that wil be on downside of career when it's over
She probably voted "no" on "Should we let a bunch of metalheads party on the CF turf during the All Star break?"
Derek Hill was activated to WM this week. He still can't hit and is coming back from TJ surgery in the offseason, but his defense in CF is incredible. Maybe if he stopped running full speed into walls he would stop needing to go on the DL every month, though.
Eating that contract and giving up a stable of young talent would epitomize the Dombrowski blockbuster. Do it.
From Nick Cafardo today: The Cardinals, Dodgers and Royals seem to be leading the chase for Tigerscontract-year slugger J.D. Martinez, according to Cafardo. As AL Central rivals of the Tigers, the Royals are especially familiar with Martinez, who has slashed .298/.379/.602 with 14 home runs in 219 plate appearances this year. The $11.75MM right fielder would significantly boost a below-average Kansas City offense that has received awful production from longtime franchise cornerstone Alex Gordon in left field. Meanwhile, with Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk on the disabled list, the Cardinals are shorthanded in the outfield. Winners of 40 of their past 51 games, the 62-29 Dodgers seemingly aren’t lacking for quality players anywhere, but picking up Martinez would make them all the formidable as they vie for a World Series. Along with the previously reported Astros and Nationals, the Red Sox are interested in Tigers closer Justin Wilson, writes Cafardo. The Red Sox have come up as potential suitors for other on-the-block relievers, including David Phelps and Pat Neshek, so the connection to Wilson isn’t exactly shocking. The 29-year-old left-hander has posted outstanding numbers over 34 1/3 innings (2.36 ERA, 12.84 K/9, 3.41 BB/9) and would immediately become Boston’s top southpaw reliever, though Fernando Abad has held his own this season and Robby Scott has fared well against lefty-swingers. Wilson is making a highly affordable $2.7MM this season and comes with another year of arbitration eligibility. Continuing the Tigers theme, righty Michael Fulmer is the Detroit starter who’s garnering the most attention from pitcher-needy teams, per Cafardo. Considering Fulmer’s among the top young hurlers in the game and controllable for the foreeseable future, that’s not surprising. There’s no indication the Tigers will seriously consider moving Fulmer, who informed Evan Woodbery of MLive.com that he doesn’t expect to go anywhere. Nevertheless, one NL executive told Cafardo that GM Al Avila is at least entertaining the offers that come in for the 24-year-old. “I think Al is being forced to listen,” said the exec. “The Tigers could get a huge haul for Fulmer, but they’re trying to get their payroll down and get younger. Trading Fulmer is not necessarily the way to do it.”
I still don't think they will really consider moving Fulmer and it's hard to say whether they should or not without knowing what might be offered, but I'm glad they're at least listening. If a team like Atlanta or Houston decided to go all in with an offer, I think we could do really well there.
It would need to be one hell of a haul. Fulmer is what you PRAY a top prospect hurler turns into. Damn few do. He could be the cornerstone of a 2021 rotation.
He could also blow out his arm in the next 12 months. If we had any chance of competing in the next 3 years, I'd probably say no to just about anything someone could offer. Given the complete lack of talent in our system right now and the reality that we're staring at what is almost a certain 5+ year build back up to being able to realistically contend, I think you have to consider all options. Fulmer's value will never be higher than it is right now or this winter. If someone wants to pay for that full value and then some, I think they should do it. But, as you said, it would have to be the kind of offer where you are almost guaranteed to at least break even, and have a realistic possibility to win it in a major way with at least 2 (likely 3) top echelon guys.
From Buster Olney's "5 players who will be traded" column: J.D. Martinez, Detroit Tigers The position-player market is saturated, generally, and in the hours leading up to the trade deadline, some general managers expect a purge of salary. But Martinez has more value than others, because he is a strong middle-of-the-order hitter who is having a good year, batting over .300 with power. "You’d have to live with his defense to take him on," said one evaluator, "but his offense more than offsets that." And this will interest a lot of teams: Martinez has destroyed left-handed pitchers, carrying a .500 average with damage into Sunday’s game -- 18 hits in 36 at-bats, including four doubles, one triple, six homers, six walks and six strikeouts. He would present an incredible weapon for the Los Angeles Dodgers, whose struggles against lefties last year are well-documented. Other teams that are possible: Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. Justin Wilson, Detroit Tigers The left-hander isn’t a classic left-hander, in that he doesn’t dominate left-handed hitters with a great breaking ball. But he is outstanding against right-handed hitters, and he can serve in multiple roles. His value is so high right now that officials think Detroit will capitalize on his standing in the market and move him. Just about every contender could use him in one form or another.
This seems about what it should be I'm getting kind of excited about the Wilson market. If we can turn him into a top 100ish guy + a little extra, that seems like a pretty nice start.
They better call Jiminez up to take his spot when he's up. Throw him in the 9th, what you got to lose.
As soon as Wilson is dealt, Greene should get the next shot. If he proves he performs well, his value increases significantly going into the offseason or the deadline next year. The only thing that really happens from Jimenez closing games well this early is he becomes more expensive long term. There's no need to rush that (or even call him up for the last 2 months and add service time) if we're going to suck.
So who do you think we should buy at the deadline? Sonny Gray is available. Norris, Manning and Burrows for him and we might get into the wildcard hunt now that we're amazing again..
If we trade with Arizona, it's like trading with ourselves, only we wouldn't get anyone of the caliber of Stewart, Burrows, Manning or Faedo. Maybe there's a Funkhouser somewhere in there.
They certainly don't have much that I can imagine we'd want. We might try and get Leyba back because we are lame like that.
I'd love the trade with them 2 years ago but the Braves fleeced them a few times already. I wonder if they are considering a starter like Zach Godley or Taijuan Walker, that seems to make little sense from AZ's end though. Their OF is pretty good with Peralta/Pollock/Tomas (though all of them have been injured at different points) ...
