Is a team about to trade for Carson Wentz, the man with the worst contract in sports history?

    Just got benched for Hurts.

Now since it isn’t fully guaranteed, it’s not likely the worst deal ever, but man is it up there.

The worst contract is one that is known to be horrible at the time and then proves to be horrible.

You can't plan for your starting qb to get the worst case of the yips in forever.

he has had one good season (where he got hurt) and they waited two more years after that to sign him to this

it was a bad contract at the time and has obviously gotten much worse

and when he got hurt they replaced him with an even more terrible qb and still didnt miss a beat. he was incredibly replaceable, had one good season, a history of injuries and they still bid against themselves to sign him to this deal

Honestly the only good news for Philly is maybe Hurts will be good and by the time Hurts needs a deal, it’ll be less painful to get rid of Wentz.

He had 27 TDs to 7 INTs and threw for 4000 yards to a supporting cast worse than anyone else in football last yr and still led his team to the playoffs. At the end of last season knowing what Goff got paid and what Dak is due most of these same NFL guys were calling the extension a bargain.

the revisionist history in here is amazing

Has there ever been an athlete in any sport that foregoes/cancels a contract when they're not performing? I think I remember seeing something about Chris Davis contemplating it with the Os.

I get they're not required to, and fuck sports owners, but I can't recall an athlete ever saying, "I don't deserve this, I'm not living up to the contract, so let's re-negotiate/cancel it." Just wondering if it's ever occurred based on an athlete's pride, loyalty to a franchise, etc.

    This is the correct answer.

While Carson Wentz is shit, they still could salvage his career with a line and some better receivers.

The Blazers once gave Evan Turner $72 million essentially because he was a free agent and they had cap space, and in his best season he averaged 9, 4, and 3

The latest Batum contract was pretty inexplicable also

the batum contract was bad but fortunately we sucked it up and ate the deal and didnt sign another dumb deal like it and now we have a bright future moving forward

I was watching something recently, maybe nfl live, and they were talking about Wentz and they showed a clip of Chuck knoblauch. I didn't really catch much as I was reading at the time.

He’s definitely got something going on. The guy has played lights out at points in his career. He was in the MVP discussion before tearing his ACL.

He definitely doesn’t trust his offensive line. And nobody can blame him when he gets sacked 3+ times a game.

Bonilla’s contract was bad, but it wasn’t tied to a salary cap. That’s the difference imo.

IF they get health on the Oline next year and he still looks like a moron back there I’ll be concerned. I’m pretty sure I could start on their line right now. It’s hard to expect anything behind a 2nd team oline.

Bonilla was bad in hindsight, deferred compensation is common in non-capped deals

Wentz was a risk to begin with and is now a total wreck

Mike Hampton is on the short list; 8-year, $121M signed in 2001.

Rockies were still paying him in 2018, eight years after he retired and 15 years after he left the Rockies. 21-28, 5.75 ERA and a 1.6 WHIP in the two years after the deal.

The Mets didn’t sign Bonilla to that contract and buying him out with a deferral gave them the payroll flexibility to get Mike Hampton and make the World Series in 2000.

People who cite the Bonilla deal as terrible are dumb.

Yep, even if an NFL player with a terrible contract gets traded, the team that traded him still has to eat cap space. Brandin Cooks is costing the Rams a $21.8 million cap hit this season.
