The guaranteed money stays on the original team’s cap. Wentz is going to be the highest-paid backup in NFL history.
From Sheil Kapadia That is a potential saving grace, but this organization has made a lot of terrible fucking decisions since they won the Super Bowl.
Wentz's deal seems like it will be among the most debilitating deals in the short term that I can remember if he can't get over whatever he's got going on right now. It could completely fuck over the Eagles next year, especially with the cap likely falling due to COVID. They might be able to get out of all that money and reset the deck by the end of 2022 if they really want, though. It's a two-year thing (three, if you count this year). I don't know how you compare that to baseball deals like Albert Pujols, Chris Davis and Miguel Cabrera where there's no cap, but the deals are 7-10 years long and you just have to eat them. The problem there is most teams refuse to just bench those guys when they suck, so those guys are still running out there every day because they make too much money to bench, which really hurts the team. I'm not sure how you can compare the difference with that stuff.
Silver Lining! Howie fucked the roster and cap so bad before we even talk about Wentz they won’t compete next year or the year after that anyway! It’s been apparent since week 2 the entire roster had to be torn down even before Wentz completely cratered. Graham, Cox, Alshon, Malik Jackson, Hargrave, DeSean, Lane and Slay are all big time contracts with significant dead cap hits in 2021 for guys who are well past their prime at this point or always injured or not playing well or all 3. Plus you got Ertz who will want out without a new deal and Kelce most likely retiring. It’s a total disaster when you add Wentz in
chris davis will always have the worst contract ever 7 yr/161 million and he’s been the worst player in baseball since he signed it
Not for near as much money, but a few years ago the Texans traded the Browns a second round pick along with Osweiller for nothing just to get his contract off the books. Maybe the Eagles could try something similar if Wentz still can't remember how to play football next year.
Hurts with an awesome Wentz impersonation on the first drive. High overthrow should have been picked, dumb decision taking a safety
how was he trash last season? I’m happy to see Wentz go at this point but I think this year has been a fall off a cliff I don’t think last year was the problem.
If a GM and was thinking about giving him a new start this certainly would send me in another direction.
Trash may be harsh but point is he hasn’t been near good enough to act like he should be given a starting job anywhere.
the one thing that annoys me about this is Wentz is going to take all the criticism for what has been a complete organizational failure since the super bowl.
Ok so then scrap it. Does he have any ground to stand on to claim he shouldn’t compete for the job? No. The whole point is Carson wentz is being a bitch, good job on pointing out an irrelevant part of my first post that in zero way is ultimately relevant
I felt like I did when I first said ok omit my comment on last season? I was wrong about him being shit last year, he was a decent NFL QB. Does that change that he is being a huge bitch about his deserved demotion?
he is a huge bitch. the eagles are just a mess though I would not be surprised at all if he went to a better situation and succeeded.
I agree he will go to a better situation. I’m not sold that the Eagles offense/Peterson didn’t completely break him
Howie Roseman will literally sacrifice anyone and anything to keep his job. Pederson is staying so look who’s the fall guy
other people in the know are saying that report isn’t completely true and the situation is still salvageable fwiw.
It’s Carson’s fault that Howie drafted JJAW over Metcalf and Reagor over Jefferson and decided to pay a washed Jason Peters $6 million to play LT and extended Alshon for $18 million in guaranteed money this year and relied on DeSean who hasn’t played a full season in like a decade and the owner forced Pederson to fire Groh and hire fucking Marty Morniwheg and this failed clown from the Broncos and run an offense without a true OC so there’s like 8 coaches in Wentz’s ear at all times. Wentz may be broken but I’d bet big money he’d be just fine on a team like Indy Howie Roseman would knife his own mother to stay GM
it annoys me that Schefter acts like he’s breaking this story after the NFL Network guys said the same thing yesterday.
