This deserves to be the first post Tiffin @others What’s everyone throwing these days? I’ve been playing since late 2019 and I’ve recently fallen in love with the Thunderbird. Bag a lot of those along with Firebirds, Buzzzs, Zones, and I putt and approach with Kastaplast Bergs and Rekos. Course Recommendations: Hornets Nest (Charlotte): Site of the DGPT Championship last year. Lots of tight tunnel shots and a good mix of forehand and backhand holes. It is a pro level course but they have short and long tee pads along with pro tee pads. Highly recommended even if you’re a beginner. Gorgeous property and well maintained. Charlotte has a cool disc golf scene. Stop at Another Round pro shop while you’re in the area. Mount Airy Disc Golf Course (Cincinnati): Site of 1995 Worlds, obviously no longer a pro level course. Some very hard par 3s with tight gaps through Mount Airy Forest. My best score here is like +5 so it’s a pretty difficult and grueling due to the rolling hills and elevation changes. Not that I’m any good or anything. Be sure to stop at The Nati and grab a disc at the pro shop right on the course property.
I'd have to go through my bag to see what exactly I'm throwing these days. Innova Beast and Wraith, a Bounty midrange, I think that's dynamic discs. In the spring I got a pair of waders for fishing and then promptly went to the disc golf course where I lost 5! discs a few days before to see what I came up with. Ended up with like 15 discs. I haven't contacted anyone. Dick move, I know, but I did the work and I gave like half of them to my buddy who started a couple years ago. He got his first ace with one of the discs I gave him.
Hey guys. Geeked for James. He and I have played together for 15 years. I'll be at his Dad's house for a tournament next weekend. Spoke with JC via text last night, he's over the moon, as you might imagine.
I'm actually very much contemplating/planning to put a few holes out on the family 40 acres. Would love to have 9 baskets and 18 tee pads from different locations.
I have a halo wraith but it’s sitting on my storage shelf because it’s so damn overstable. It’s a bit too much of a disc for me. I don’t throw much more than a 10 speed
1st place payout was 16,500. The pro tour championship last year had 20k to the winner. This was the biggest purse in the history of pro disc golf I believe. It’ll only get bigger and bigger with the growth of the sport. James will make a ton of money from the eventual world champion tour series discs MVP will run for him.
Got 18 at our house. Been having tournaments here for a couple years now. Pretty fingers cool. I say do it.
I couldn't throw backhand for the life of me when I first started, so I flicked for most of my drives. Fast forward and my backhand is fine, but I've found the high speed discs tend to do better for me flicking (I lost my old disc craft Flick on the day I lost 5 discs.)
Awesome. Didn’t know you knew him. He seems like such a genuine guy and deserves the hell out of this.
It's definitely going to happen, just a matter of coming up with the baskets, really. It would be the only course within like 40 miles.
I mostly throw forehand as well and have a serviceable backhand. I throw a beat in halo Destroyer for my max distance forehands. They’re so beefy and inconsistent with their destroyer molds so I think I just got lucky.
Also, we should come up with a list of tmb-er home courses or recs for certain cities. I'll use dgcoursereview or udisc, but always good to have a firsthand account from someone.
100%. He's the #1 seed on my VTI (Virginia team invitational) squad. Big match play event every year. He flew in from TX to play this year.
I have connections with Prodigy and Innova if you want to get baskets for better than MSRP. The Prodigy T3 is extremely heavy duty for the cost. Re: Baskets: my goal is to have a different tournament grade basket on every bole at our course. I'm halfway there, the rest are portables.
I've played one of the courses at the PDGA headquarters in Augusta, and I highly recommend the visit if you're in the area. Nice lake beside 2 of the courses but not a lot of over the water holes. Went to Austin recently and played Flying Armadillo down in San Marcos. Very cool hill country course on the regular 18, but then they have a one-of-a-kind putt-putt course with art installments, gimmicks, and obstacles. Was a blast aside from being brutally hungover.
More given the gravity of the situation. Golf discs tend to move R to L when thrown backhand. James threw a turnover, L to R, into a very well protected green.
I played WR Jackson and Headrick at IDGC. Really like Jackson. I've played in ten or 15 states. Went to worlds in VT in 2018. This is my first year in Masters. Masters world's is in TN this year and I'm hoping to get in.
Add: in his post round interview he said he still couldn't believe it went in. They didn't show the lead in, but he was forced to lay up to there off a bad kick on his drive. Totally nuts.
James Conrad anecdotes: Dude is Uber coordinated, can juggle 5 balls pretty easily I watched him unicycle down a hill, in the snow, for kicks one day.
Mcbeth lives about 40 mins from me. I've thrown parts of the course at his house. His design @ the New London tech center is pretty awesome. Played there this morning, shot 73 (par 68). I'd say 71 would be 1000 rated.
Nerdgasm over the thread val venis . Thanks for getting it going. Zach Melton came and played my course 2 years ago. He beat me by one. My bid for ace cranked off the basket on 18 for him to win. Played a lot with Dickerson. Awesome guy.
Paul's place is going to be gnarly. Haven't played the whole thing. New London is tough if you can't throw 400 in the woods and open. Lots of OB too. I like it, but it is 100% pro level. New players would be miserable.
Good investment on their part. They have a huge release (planned) tomorrow, biggest since pandemic started. Can't imagine how quickly JC 1X stuff will sell once it's ready.
Hard to say. His putter (Nomad) hasn't been released yet. I felt one he gave his dad. That would be my guess, along with Envys. He was asked to focus on the overmolded brands for the first year (MVP and Axiom). I think he will only get better once he gets to throw some of the Streamline line up.
I’ve played a ton of courses within 100 miles of the Cincinnati-Dayton area. Have yet to hit Idlewild but it’s next on my list. Played Hornets Nest in Charlotte and Myrtle Beach DGC earlier in April and they were both awesome courses. we have two great pro shops in our area in Hazy Shade (Dayton) and The Nati (Cincinnati). They’re right next to a couple of great courses. My Airy is the one next to the Nati and it hosted worlds in 1995 I believe.
If anyone has any course recs and have time to write a short description of the course and where it’s at relative to a large city, I’ll post it at the top on the first page.
Great to see a thread, and Residue, man, cool as hell to see a poster with this insight! I’ve played about 17 years and I’ve been throwing a lot of Gyro for the last several. Especially putters and their crazy high-speed understable drivers. Conrad has been a favorite for a long time, and so when I heard he was leaving Innova, I was hoping that he would start throwing MVP, but I didn’t have my hopes up. So I was really stoked to see him win. Jomez’s production all week was the best ever. I watched a couple Gatekeeper rounds too to watch Cale and Conrad on chase cards, but Jomez continues to separate themselves by more and more. I will say I’m completely over Big Jerm though in terms of commentary. Anyway I live in Minneapolis and we’ve got a thriving scene up here. I played in leagues for years before I became a dad. I play casually now with a buddy or solo about 2-4x/mo year round. I’m mostly MVP for putt/approach (though I do have a Luna thrower I love) and midrange. But the driver I’ve always had in my bag in at least two plastics is the Valkyrie. I’ve also had the same DGA Squall understable midrange since 2006. I’ve never played east of Wisconsin but I sure wish I could do Smugglers or Maple Hill or Hornet’s Nest. Anyway glad there’s a new thread.
Funshot Residue Kent Pavelka Can you explain the differences in the discs (putter, driver, etc.)? Is it just weight?
we have a couple good courses here in Tallahassee. Tom Brown Park and Jack McClean park. I got to play DeLaVeaga(they host the Masters) in Santa Cruz last year. It was a great experience
Difference is in wing (edge) profile. Drivers are much sharper, making them faster through the air, while putters are shaped more like a catch frisbee. In fact, players often warm up "soft tossing" putters back and forth. You wouldn't want to play catch with a driver mold. It wouldn't cut you, but it would hurt. Midranges are basically in between. There are also subsets and some more unique designs, but that's the gist. If someone wants, I can post pictures that would illustrate it quite clearly. Factoid: They have field events @ Worlds, like putting, accuracy, and distance. The winning distance last week was 686'. The world record is over 1000'. This was set at altitude (Primm lake salt flats) with a huge tail wind.
