We’re in a pandemic where the federal government is just saying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ people are struggling to get food and are rampantly unemployed we can’t leave the country bc no one wants anyone from here to visit People are being beaten up and shot at for exercising their 1st amendment rights Today’s a day to celebrate the independence of being in a country that grants inalienable freedom. Doesn’t feel that free this year though
Weirdest 4th in my lifetime by several orders of magnitude. I was able to delude myself into some faux patriotism in years past because I believed we were potentially on the right track, but it’s hard to have a celebration of freedom in our current situation.
There’s a sense of guilt almost. Like I haven’t had much negative effects from covid these last few months other than a pay cut and crippling anxiety meanwhile people who are our neighbors are dying or unable to provide for their family and then people act like it’s nothing and get in a tizzy because of a mask, or get upset because their small business isn’t hitting the margins it blows
we're an international joke with crumbling democratic institutions, we're pitied by the half the world we don't bomb or overthrow their governments and hated by the rest proud to be an american
Now that I think about it I don’t think I’ve ever been proud to be an American. I’ve been indoctrinated to believe it but other than that idk
This sums it up pretty well How to Celebrate the 4th of July When America Is a Constant Disappointment https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/...08&utm_medium=social&utm_source=VICE_facebook
To me, the holiday is about what is good in the United States. I have never let one side cause me to hate the whole.
i've posted about it on here before but i always found the arbitrary nature of regional or country pride dumb from a young age since it was completely random be proud of substance, there's not a tonnnnn to be proud of as an american and it's real easy to make a case the negatives outweigh the positives. doesn't help that you feel lied to at some point when you learn more.
I've never been "Fuck yeah, America!!" But always enjoyed the holiday for the things that are the side events. Grew up at the beach, so the being on the water or at the beach, friends gathering, cooking out and fireworks. This year not really doing anything like that. Feels like we're regressing as a nation. Even in the past, even if we weren't perfect, small steps and progress were happening, albeit slowly.
Ok so what’s good and what did I say that was about one side or the other, bc last I checked this pandemic is killing everyone regardless of how they voted
We’ll all be in the ground soon enough. It’s good for your mental health to enjoy yourself for a day.
Yes. I’m not too proud of my country at the moment and it feels hollow to celebrate an idealistic fiction penned 244 years ago that has yet to be realized and our government actively fighting against it being realized. Teddy Roosevelt said of the Declaration of Independence “...words count for nothing except in so far as they represent acts.” The shining city on a hill is a lie. Happy Independence Day.
People are literally marching in the streets for equality. Symbols of racism erected in response to the civil rights movement are coming down everywhere. People have been shaken out of complacency by the events of 2020. That’s a good thing. The pandemic is forcing people to re-examine the need for government in their lives and the effect of good or bad leadership in government. That’s a good thing.
Pretty much this, have really fond memories of previous 4ths that have nothing to do with American pride and everything to do with the gatherings of family and friends Even today I have an extra buzz of energy making it feel slightly different from a normal Saturday. Fully plan on enjoying this beautiful afternoon with beer and burgers
People were literally assaulted by those asked to protect and serve. In the face of this there’s still rampant white supremacy and racism in law enforcement, media, news, etc. we are still very much a white supremacist nation. We haven’t done a percent of what’s needed. And even then it’s still not going to make me proud to celebrate today I also think it requires a bit of sense of the moment because it needed a pandemic with double digit unemployment to have people protest on the level
i appreciate the silver lining approach but everything that predates and is responsible for these things happening is very bad
This is a good point. For as awful the leadership we have at the top and the actions done against ppl fighting for change, we are seeing the effects of changed minds and grass roots community organization. Things are happening we can be proud of, that are separate from the terrible shit we have at the top of our country
Also fwiw I don’t think it’s wrong to go out and bbq or have a beach day. One of the best parts of today imo is being able to enjoy the natural resources we have today, I usually go on a hike or something today I’m just asking if there’s a sense of National pride or joy for the country we live in. Like usually even I reflect on the chances I’ve been given here in spite of everything. I’m just saying I don’t have that same feeling this year. It’s almost somber
I think he's saying there are good movements and change happening that can be celebrated irrespective off the awfulness that is the police and leadership.
right and I’m not saying people can’t enjoy the day off either. And for the most part a lot of businesses are open today. It isn’t a holiday for many The day off = great, good, there should be more. We should have more days off and every business should be closed with paid holidays more than like 1 time a year (one a month, plus 3 weeks paid vacation, months of sick leave and 6 months parental leave for mothers, fathers, adoptees. 3 for grandparents who can show a need) what I’m asking is if there’s a sense of national pride with today
Only source of patriotism I have enjoyed since 2017 was the USMNT but then they shit the bed also. Still waiting for all the "winning".
If anybody liked this post without realizing what you (of all people)were going for they are either new here or very very dumb
Feels a bit like rushing the field and tearing down the goalposts during a 4-8 season when you beat your rival for the first time in 15 years
Someone is disrespecting the veterans that put their life on the line for the freedom that the USA is enjoying right now.
It’s a joke, probably another bad one. I am using the same logic that white thrash nfl fans use when they complain about kaepernic kneeling
It’s not just about this year. I’m thankful for the opportunities and life I have. My family is healthy and been doing all the right things through the Pandemic. I’m glad for the extra family time through this quarantine. Our country isn’t perfect but over time we have also done a lot of good. I like to focus on that and the positives. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. We’ll get through this thing stronger as a country just like in previous turbulent times.
