I think most people would look at that Harvard grad as spoiled, out of touch, ungrateful, etc….millions would kill for that life changing opportunity. JMO

Millions would kill to eat a Big Mac, but that doesn’t mean it’s beyond criticism. There are a lot of groups in this country with valid, current complaints. Telling them not to voice them because things are good for you is just astonishingly out of touch.

there are many countries where the quality of life is higher, and the country commits less harm on the world i can still eat a burger because some global rebellion kicked off in part to the DoI, but you don't have to lie about the situation either
With it falling on a Sunday, I legitimately forgot it was even the 4th because my schedule didn't change at all. I've never really given a shit about the whole USA rah rah shit though. As somebody who has to be up at 5:00 the day after and has a dog who is absolutely terrified of them, fuck everything about residential fireworks.
Yeah I hear ya, and not saying people can’t voice complaints. I would say, on balance, narrative has gone too far in the other direction IMO. Not enough gratitude, too much pessimism, etc…like I can’t remember the last time I read something positive about the US on this board
I think the point is things may be fucked up here, and they are alsofucked up in every country on the planet. Just because we arent perfect and have some ugly history doesnt mean we cant be proud of our country that does things better than most things in the world. If you refuse to celebrate the country in which you reside because its not perfect, or because it did some terrible things in its past, then you arent going to ever be happy. Its ok to have pride in the good things that we’ve accomplished without that being supportive of or ignoring the bad things
i can think a lot of reasons for people who live here not to be prideful of their country, at least to the fireworks level
Ill also add that I really dont care if people celebrate the 4th or not. Doesnt affect my life one bit, but I will say that a multi-page thread every year telling everyone why you refuse to celebrate seems a little attention-starved
Celebrating the greatness of America, saying other places have done bad too, saying Americans should just be happy for what we have - all of that serves to just kneecap the push for meaningful change. If you’ve moved to the “things aren’t so bad. Everyplace is kind of bad” stage, you’ve lost the motivation to put in the hard work necessary to fix things.

so you’re agreeing with me? When this country was founded those things only applied to certain individuals. Today it might apply to more but there are still people for whom it doesn’t. Celebrate all you want but be honest and understand why some might not want to.
