If we're talking about good things America does/is doing in the world it's of course worth mentioning that we live in a peaceful time relative to history and a big reason for that is the global influence of the USA economically and militarily.
it could be argued that nukes play a major role in this as well mutually assured destruction and what not personally I think it’s a race between expansion beyond earth and fallout real world
Maybe a bit. But I think the calculus for most countries that would be aggressors is more along the lines of fearing US involvement in a standard military capacity, the US financially backing their opponent, or fearing the economic repercussions of ending up on the US' naughty list.
I wonder what the balance is between disputes caused by the US and disputes deterred by the US. I'm not sure where it lands over the last 20-30 years and/or the last 60 years.
It's hard because we still see ramifications of things we did 50+ years ago to this day. We've caused a ton of human misery but that's not necessarily been via traditional warfare.
I feel like people say this mainly because they heard someone else say it. The past 80 years haven't been "peaceful" at all
Love to have these people just having had the highest office in the land and commanding the uncritical, unquestioning loyalty of millions
It’s a day off from work for me. I’ll go to a couple cookouts but I’ll leave before fireworks. Plus I hate fireworks. They’re annoying.
Really rethinking how much stock I should put in a piece of paper written by a bunch of dudes which, as a compromise, still couldn't even consider black people to be fully human
What constitutes celebrating? I am having some neighbors over and making bbq. My kids will light sparklers at home and my wife may take them to see fireworks if it’s convenient. (The whole Roe v Wade thing has her pretty pissed off so fireworks are probably off the table.) We talk to the kids (7 and 5) at their level if it comes up. Recently it’s been about police. Next weekend it may be about Independence Day. I just try to make sure they understand things aren’t always as clean and tidy as they are being told/taught.
I’m going to enjoy my day off from work but this country is dogshit ESPECIALLY to anyone who is my color. The 4th of July isn’t a day for black people because to be frank we’re not considered Americans.
I'll go to my buddy's birthday party/4th celebration. But American exceptionalism is a drug and people need to take their heads out of the sand.
The only thing different for me on July 4th compared to any other Monday is that I will not be working
It is the most peaceful period in US history from a regular every day crime standpoint. Like, way way less. Thanks unleaded gasoline.
It’s just a day off I’ll use it to go somewhere this weekend because that’s what i do with every day that i get off. But i wont be celebrating shit
And I’ll have the day off and will hang out with friends, but certainly not going to be celebrating the state of the World and this country when so many are under attack
Just gotta ignore the fact that we export our violence across the world and then feel self righteous enough to preach to everyone else about how great this place is.
4th is a Monday this year right? We will cook and have some cocktails on Sunday night. Nothing to do with America, but we off on Monday. If kids want to go see fireworks that’s a maybe. The holiday is pointless to me, but I’ll take a 3 day weekend.
