ok then separate from what he was financially incentivized to do, what makes him a good person
So you don't have evidence of him being bigoted outside of a statement made at 91? Again, I'm open to something that contradicts decades of players saying otherwise but you'd have to cite something specific
The countless stories I’ve read about or been told about him going out of his way to helping people in Tallahassee to his thousands of players whom give story after story about the positive impact he had in their lives in developing them to be a good person, husband and father. Also he’s done plenty of charity work as well.
Questioning the true intentions of a human. I don’t know what goes through anyone’s head nor their true motivations, so I’ll just stop calling people good people. Never thought of it like that.
I thought Warrick Dunn was a good person. However, I don’t really know his intent so by helping hundreds of poor families afford their own home. Maybe he was just doing it for the positive publicity so he could get endorsement deals to enrich himself.
yes all the suspect things came after he was old whether it was campaigning for trump in '16, '18, '20, questionable comments about black athletes, i get FSU fans think the PK Sam stuff is bitterness or whatever, but there's a picture that fits here
Warrick Dunn is a saint. I don't think being skeptical of coaches PR machines or selling acceptable narratives when their job success requires it vs when they're outside of that dynamic is out of bounds either.
It's all a spectrum. After the last decade of coaches being outed for doing the two-step it breeds cynicism, and when theres some substance there it's hard to hand wave that away.
What comments about black athletes did he make?
I just want to clarify that you believe PK Sam, who said himself he was bitter about what Bowden said to NFL scouts about him leaving early, is the source of truth while decades of other players who praise him don't count? I don't think promoting Trump erases that or the decades of charity work for children
Not at all, I think you take it all in aggregate and its a muddled picture. The defensiveness from FSU fans I find endlessly amusing though, but kind of gross how so much of those same fans always talk about him being senile for decades.
man, Beamer told players to skip class and practice to go to the Million Man March in DC and I'm still 1000% sure I don't want to hear his political opinions because he's a rich, religious white guy who grew up in Appalachia. the only saving grace is he stopped talking about anything not relating to football the second he retired so I can maintain some cloak of ignorance about him unlike Bowden.
Or maybe it’s we know him better than you and you’re coming in throwing shit on the wall. The arrogance is astounding.
Dude has been pretty clearly declining for a while. It would be odd if he wasn't from 80 (when he retired) to now. I'm not a doctor but do most people stay as sharp in their 80s and 90s as they were in their 40s and 50s?
He voted for trump and he knew exactly what he was doing. What’s the proper response as a fan?
for curiosities sake i found an article referring to him being senile in 2002 because he chose the "Let's Roll" catch phrase for that season
I personally know Bobby Bowden and can confirm everything lyrtch is saying. Sorry some of you had to find out this way
"Thanks for the wins and natties, wish you weren't a big piece of shit." Any more brain busters?
Do you know him better than Canes knows Joey Bosa?
lots of people stay sharp, absolutely. more importantly, don't you find it odd that people are trying to tie political leanings to cognitive decline? what's really being said in that instance?
Nothing at all. He's an old southern conservative christian in a sport dominated by those types. It'd be a surprise if he wasn't.
Realizing he didn't wake up at 85 having a world view that fits that ideology would just be the normal thing to accept.
I believe youre supposed to wish painful death on him and scream nothing else he ever did in his life matters.
Or you know, you can continue to just be an actual sane person.
Has Lyrtch ever been wrong about anything?
He has always been a republican I would assume. He never wrote long letters about politicians until he was 90+ recovering from cancer. I don’t think that necessarily represents who he was for the majority of his life, the hundreds of players who say he changed their lives for the better or the tremendous amount of work he did for children's charities. Anyone who has watched him for the last 30+ years would tell you the tail end of his career was pretty brutal as he seemed to decline mentally. The jovial guy with quick wit often became angry and confused which was tough to watch.
Right. Every white coach in America did, unless you prove to me otherwise.
Segue. In today’s times, I just don’t know how you can celebrate any college coach or most institutions given what’s beneath the surface. We’re all complicit in some way- we are arguing on a college football message board after all.
If he was a piece of shit towards the end and, in turn, encouraged other Floridians to be bigger pieces of shit, then that’s his current value to society. Sorry bout it.
I met Bobby again several years ago. He was looking rough as hell, was obviously in mental decline and being told where to go and what to do by his handlers.
Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker suck ass. It really isn't that hard to do.
I don't think anyone is debating who he is currently at 91 and near death
these posts are always weird, its just an admission you don't really read my posts except in these odd fan behavior threads. i'm wrong often!
first half is dumb
second part, yeah, acknowledging things are complicated and often have dark underpinnings is just part of being an adult. the moral complications of CFB are dicey for many reasons.
agreed every coach is a jackass except mack who is a perfect angel
Not quite 14 words...
“We have to get out and vote for President Trump because reelecting him is our only chance to leave the next generation with the same heritage, beliefs and opportunities that Ann and I had and that many of you had,” Bowden wrote. "... So please, take the time, dadgumit, for the sake of our children and grandchildren, to keep America great and vote for Donald Trump.”
I'm glad the ND fans around here rightly called out Holtz on his MAGA bullshit because this is fucking embarrassing. Fuck Bobby Bowden. Full Stop.
i really wish I didn’t have to read your post, you are pompous in every thread even if you have a point.
FSU fans also called out Bobby on his MAGA bullshit. Not sure your point.
He’s 92 right? Taking a dump is pretty much life threatening at that age
look, as an aside to this instance, character witnesses are kind of bullshit. unless you are bordering on complete mental illness that manifests in a variety of paths every single person you'll ever meet is going to have people that say they're a good person. the bigger the job the more likely for that person to be able to effect change in people's lives and thus the more people who'll likely stick up for you if people speak on your character. how many times have you read an article where some bigtime murderer or rapist gets caught and the neighbor goes "oh my god, I had no idea. they were such a kind person to me and my family. they picked up the paper while we were on vacation, they helped my son with his pinewood derby car."?
I'm not telling you the people saying Bobby positively impacted their lives are lying. I'm saying first off if you're an FSU fan you've got almost impossible to remove rose-colored glasses for Bowden and second you have to understand a lot of other people aren't really keen to Trumpers and they're prepared to make being a Trumper weigh very heavily on the scales when they're judging that person and you just have to deal with that opinion.
I've said before that you basically cannot find a person to speak ill of Beamer. he's that stereotypical "give you the shirt off his back" kind of rural American. I have a lot of qualms with Beamer the coach but I have nothing bad to say about Beamer the person but if Beamer came out talking about how Biden stole the election and blue lives matter and we need to build the wall* then I'd have to step back and take stock of what I think about Beamer the person. this is where some people are with Bowden, that's all.
* - I'm not saying that Bowden specifically said any of that per se.
I mean even Bob Marley was a huge dickbag wygd
what a world class pivot
see I’m trying to keep this from going in this direction. It could be a little column A a little column B type thing. He is white a republican and a man from the south (a football coach at that) it’s not a huge stretch to think his ideology sways to “conservatism”. I’m betting his is more trump than anti Trump and probably has been that way. We just live in an age now that stuff is called out more. He is from a time when people idolized football coaches more and forgave them for stuff that wouldn’t fly now. If I wanted to I’m sure I can find problematic things he has said and or done.
lol this post being liked by only Noles proves how wrong you are.
That doesn’t prove anything whatsoever but thanks for trying. I like the idea that fan base like distribution serves as proof of a statement though.
Not everyone is a perfect person. Everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me.
I don't think you can necessarily make a full assessment on someone's entire life character based on some things they've (likely) had written for them when their brain is half mush and probably being pumped full of Fox News all day in their 80s-90s. And I don't even like Faulkner.
you guys (fans) are saying he is good person because he is the best coach in your schools history. You guys (fans) are taking the words of his family and former players as proof. He is an old white republican from the south it’s not a stretch to think he has always had pretty shitty ideology.
It is very hard for some people to do this with their football coaches and it is weird.
TIL there is a troll account dedicated to me. This is flattering.
