Took our older dog Jackie (13yrs, had her for 8) to the vet this morning. Over the past 6 months she has lost weight, missed some meals and not finished meals along with looking ragged. Have had her in several times over this period and was just told she is getting old. I insisted for them to look further into it as she had not eaten 3 straight meals, had hardly slept in 2 nights and would not curl in a ball, just laid out sprawled flat on the bed. Blood work showed low white blood cell, high red platelets and borderline anemic. They wanted to do x-rays. That showed a large mass in her abdomen and smaller masses in her chest. Took her home and gave her some raw hamburger, that miraculously restored her appetite. We will be saying our goodbyes today and her final vet visit will be tomorrow. My wife is distraught, this is her first pet. I also love dogs more than people so I will be drinking beer today in abundance. I guess we will be looking for another dog soon as Copper is gonna be fucked up as she has been by his side since he was 2. This picture was taken over a year ago as she is a ghostly shell of her former beautiful self now.
Posts like yours make me make sure I appreciate my two. Like with everything else it reminds me tomorrow is not guaranteed. Again I’m sorry for your loss. You’re doing the brave kind although difficult thing for her.
Yes, I get home and she is curled up, which she hasn't been since Sunday, and then gets up and wags her tail and for a brief second I think "we can hold this up for awhile." And then I think of the hour I spent lying on the floor with her at 3am Tuesday morning because she is in pain and can't sleep and fuck that. No dog, let alone a dog as sweet as she is, needs to endure that just for the sake of a selfish owner. And, now she his super pissed at me. She abhors baths. Good thing dogs can only stay mad for like 15 minutes.
So weird question. When taking Jackie in today, would it be weird to take Copper in with us as well? I don't know if he would be more confused by Jackie going out the door and never coming back or by seeing us put her down. The vet said they would let him come but have never had anyone do that before. That may be my answer in itself.
I got a similar response from my vet, when we lost Yogi & inquired about bringing Oscar. We ended up not bringing him with, but he definitely knew & grieved with us.
Last pic of the sweetest dog the world has seen Spoiler: not for the faint of heart, it is really fucking dusty in here I actually breathed a sigh of relief when she got the sedative and fell asleep. She closed her eyes and the pain left her face and I had not seen either of those happen since Sunday. Now Copper has been walking around the house for hours looking for Jackie and I am loosing my mind all over again.
I said I wasn't going to tear up when I opened the spoiler. I don't know why I lie to myself. I'm sorry to hear about it man.
Thanks guys. It was time and I've seen it coming but that did not make it any easier. Thanks for dealing with my sad photos as it is helping me get through it.
I just went through this a few weeks ago. There's nothing anyone can say that makes you feel better in my experience. Annie was not herself when we put her down, which was awful to see but made it easier knowing she wasn't going to be in pain anymore. I hold on to the good times dearly. Annie would have been 9 years old today, I miss her like crazy. Thoughts are with you, amigo.
We went to Mutts Canine Cantina last night. Copper got to run offleash with some new friends while I got a beer and a burger. Several times Copper started a howling circle in the middle of the yard. This big wolf-like beast and him became fast friends.
a.tramp not that it helps but I have put down many loved friends in my life and it never gets easier but take joy in the fact that you gave her lots of love and know she gave it all back. I know one day I’ll be sourounded in heaven with all my past dogs and cats
Kaiser has really sensitive skin since he’s recovered from mange. When we got him he had virtually no hair, and he’s got all sorts of skin tags and scars from then. It suddenly got worse over the past two months, to the point that he was working 3-4 hot spots at a time and having to wear the inflatable shame collar. Lady Tegg was brushing him the other day and pointed out how bad his “dandruff” was. We looked at it, and it was soap. The girl that bathed him has been on maternity leave for about two months. We figured it out that the new girl just wasn’t used to bathing him and didn’t rinse him enough. We felt terrible, the vet felt terrible, and the new girl felt terrible. He’s been happier than a pig in shit since he got a full soak.
Went to the 2nd birthday party for a local brewery today and they had all sorts of shit going on. This included a local organization that had a bunch of puppies and a few older dogs to adopt. We talked my dad into adopting the dog him and his girlfriend liked, so welcome home Luna
Today I saw a girl walking a German Shorthair pup (4-5 months old). She had him wearing a plaid sweater. He obviously had never hunted before or will ever hunt, but he was holding a point walking behind a pigeon for a whole block. Absolutely adorable.
They say blue heeler and catahoula predominant mutt but who really knows. She's really pretty. 6-8 months old with an awesome temperament.
Right. My dad's girlfriend had a blue heeler that passed away a year ago or so. The new dog looks a lot like her but you can definitely see a little catahoula in her as well as some just general generic dog qualities
Caught the pups snuggling together on the deck while sunbathing today. Grabbed my phone to snap a picture and these two goofballs started acting like they had a plan for when this moment arrived. Exhibit A:
My black lab rolls around on her back snorting and grunting in the sun probably once a day. I try to get a video and as soon as I pick up the phone she always just stops and stares directly at me. Somehow she knows.
Found a 9 month old purebred Beagle at a shelter. Checked him out, wife checked him out and then Copper checked him out. Welcome to the family Copper. 10 year old Copper gets to keep his name, 9 month old Copper is henceforth known as Scout, even though his papers say Copper.
They are warming up nicely. He will need to learn his place in the pack. He has already tested Copper at food time and snack time and that did not work out well for him. Setting him up an appointment tomorrow to get neutered in a couple weeks after he adjusts so that will help.
My girlfriend has two small shih tzus that live with us. A 15 pound one that's a princess and lazy as shit and like a 9 pound one who is always super excited and literally the fastest dog I've ever seen. Luna became fast friends with everyone. My dad and his girlfriend have another 11 year old dog but neither he or the larger shih tzu can run with the small one. Luna chased him for like 30 minutes which they both loved. My girlfriend and I left today and took our dogs home but Luna and my dad's older dog are now best friends apparently. There are multiple dog beds and places to lay but they have decided this is their optimal position
