    Just a little suivi

He is fine, the vet said he either had a lesion on the brain, kidneys were not working well or he suffered a little stroke.

Symptoms were dizzinness (to the point of just falling down trying to climb on the couch), lost of appetite. Blank stares...

He went through the whole testing and came up with a clean sheet. He is healthy, probably suffered a little stroke or he has a little brain injury due to his age. For a 13years old he is still doing good.

Started to really eat again last night, ate twice as he used to. But he was not eating for a few days. I hope we have him as a family for at least 2 more years but that might be asking too much.

    Good news! Yay

Labs. They aren’t territorial at all really. One dog starts it. I used to live on about 200ac in Kansas. Long driveway, so when he was a puppy I encouraged him to bark at stuff so I’d know someone was here. Fast forward to now living in town and it’s not such a great tool anymore.

    Uhoh.

Have you put some of your shirts or items with your smell out along the tree line? I run a lot of hounds and sometimes they just don't come back and we have to leave them in the woods. I will throw a shirt and my socks along our path and come back the next few days and check those spots, and generally find a dog laying on the clothing.

It has worked every time for me, with the longest I have had a dog gone being 4 days. I hope that gives you some hope.

No they said they noticed it when they brought the dogs back inside. They were outside with them but still didn't see any incident. They really care about the dogs so I have no reason to doubt them. They built their backyard to be a dog park and now watch dogs full time since so many people use them.

My best guess is she did that against the ground while running and maybe falling at full speed while chasing other dogs. She's a runner. But I have no idea.

Is it swollen at all around it? To me it looks like a dog bite. Not an attack but maybe the pups figuring out their positions in the pack. A lot of times when they check each other they don't get a full bite just a k-9 puncture and it looks just like that- skin tear with a puncture in the middle.

It should be pretty easy to take car of and it sounds like you are doing it right but hollar at me if you have any issues with caring for it, I can give you our protocol we run when it happens to our dogs.

appreciate it and the insight. Yea it's possible as she is a very "give and take" player. There is some redness all around it which is why I thought it was a continuous "scrape" of some sort.

But yea just applying ointment. The dog sitters even sent us home with a soft cone they had to help if she is licking it. She'll go to the vet today just to get it checked out.

Injured dogs saved by orthopedic surgeons
    Posted: Jul 12, 2013 8:43 PM EDT
    [IMG]
    MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -
Normally, Dr. John Keating does surgery on humans. On Friday, he read up on dog anatomy, went into the operating room, and began surgery to mend the injuries caused when two dogs were hit by a car.

It took a lot of people coming together to save the lives of the American Bulldog named Smith, and the German Shepherd named Sherman.

Despite having two broken legs, Smith was walking around without a whimper.

"These dogs are so strong," Dr. John Keating said. Keating has been an Orthopedic surgeon for 25 years. Keating has worked on dogs before, but this is the first time he has worked on two dogs at one time, and the last dog he did surgery on was three years ago.

"We look at x-rays, but dog anatomy has basically the same muscles as a human, just arranged a little bit differently," Keating said. "So, we had to do a little anatomic study ahead of time. Fortunately, one of my residents' wife is a vet, and she leant me a book so I could look up the surgical approaches."

Second year resident Dr. Casey Spivey had just finished a surgery on an elderly woman at Atlanta Medical Center when he ran into Keating.

"I had a case this morning, he caught me in the hallway. He said ‘what are you doing this afternoon?' I said ‘nothing.'"

Spivey said he wasn't nervous, but excited to assist in a surgery that he'd never done before.

"I have never operated on a dog, it was awesome," Spivey said. "When he asked me to go, I kind of got the chills, he got the chills."

It took the doctors a lot of time and energy to mend the injuries of both dogs. Both had broken legs, and needed metal plates and screws put in to heal their broken bones.

If you had to pay for this type of surgery it would be more than $10,000.

The medical equipment was donated by Synthes, the space to operate on the dogs during surgery was given to Keating and Spivey by Dr. Michael Good. He operates Town and Country Veterinary Clinic in Marietta.

"With veterinary medicine we could have compromised and come up with something that would possibly make this dog functional," Good said. But John (Keating) is a perfectionist. Without his expertise, without his equipment, it would have been a very bad situation."

Good said veterinarians do perform surgeries on dogs and cats. In this case, the dogs needed a skilled surgeon as soon as possible. If Keating hadn't volunteered his time, the dogs would have been put down.

Smith and Sherman were saved by Fulton County Animal Services. They are now operated by Lifeline Animal Project. Good said five years ago, an animal control center would not have dreamt of saving these dogs lives.

"Before they would write off a dog with these kinds of injuries," Good said. "With this new organization Lifeline in place, they are taking advantage of every resource at their disposal to try and save as many as possible."

Keating said he is a dog fanatic. Keating also volunteers at Lifeline, and when they called to ask him to save the dogs, he didn't hesitate.

"This dog is going to find a new home. He is going to be somebody's best friend forever. And this child will have this wonderful companion," Keating said.

For more information on how you can help these animals, you can go to Lifeline's website.

Both Smith and Sherman should make full recoveries in 2 to 3 weeks.

Just to update everyone we still haven’t found her yet. I took my Husky and we walked all through the woods behind our house. No signs of her back there so I’m starting to believe she got picked up. We have contacted all of the dog shelters and vets in area to be on the lookout. She is chipped so hopefully she resurfaces at a vet office.

We have our reward posters all over the place as well. Fingers crossed it has been a rough couple of days.

5'1 90lb chick at the park who admitted before anything happened that her pitt was very defensive and not good around random dogs still thought it was a good idea to take him off leash while having to keep up with a little maltese at the same time :bird: if your dogs a fuckin asshole don't do that shit unless you can keep your attention on them. And honestly at 90lbs having an aggressive dog that's as cockstrong as those isn't a great idea... Was off the leash for 5 minutes before picking a fight with both my gf's Pyraneese/Lab mix and my dog. Baxter got nipped pretty good. lucky he didn't get him worse I absolutely would have told the chick to pay for a Dr bill if he needed stitches etc. She was very apologetic and seemed like she would have if it came to that.

he's fine especially after i went to a bbq place and brought him back some rib bones but hearing two dogs go at it and one come out crying to high hell is pretty scary. Baxter's a big baby for a few minutes he was wailing.

first time in 5 years of taking him to off-leash places pretty regularly to have a problem with actual fighting. Most people are very attentive with their dogs or at least have some awareness of when it's a good idea to let them off leash. And her dog was ok when she was standing over it basically babysitting but then her maltese (which was cool as hell with our dogs) took off and she ran to go grab him and I think the pitt felt a little skittish and cornered by two random dogs that were both a little bigger than him.

All the swimming holes are off leash park areas and Baxter loves swimming too much for this to stop us from going. he does look pretty sad still having that piece of his nose just hanging. Waiting for it to die completely before clipping it off.

that sounds real bad. much worse than this thankfully was pretty quick and not too crazy

the chick hit her dog in the head with a stick when it happened... was more of a glorified twig that was about 10" long but she was only a couple steps away with her back turned and right when they started barking she didn't freeze up - turned, two steps and wham right around the top of his head. was glad because the gf and i were at least 10 yards away getting our stuff together to leave. and it was enough to make her dog back up and walk off and pout. between the stick and her being super apologetic and offering to give me her number if I ended up taking him to the vet, I wasn't mad about it. They're dogs after all but didn't feel like lecturing someone on not having more than they can handle running around off leash... seemed like a bright enough one to figure it out in the future

This couple found her running down the street close to the interstate almost two miles from our house. There is a large industrial park over there and I guess she must have ended up in it. Our house is surrounded by several 100 acres of fields and woods so it’s not surprising she ran around for 3 days without seeing any people.
