We’re looking for lab breeders around Atlanta: fiancée wants a female chocolate sometime next year. This is going to be a house dog that I will train for canine good citizen certification. She won’t be a hunting dog. That said, first breeder I looked at gets $2,500 per puppy, regardless of sex or color. Is that the market? Seems crazy that the most popular breed in America fetches $2,500... Neil & Jodi Martin Carriage Hill Labradors www.carriagehilllabs.com (404) 713-7116 * AKC Breeders of Merit * Guess I could get a Craigslist lab puppy for $600 and just call it a day.
We’ve had shelter dogs all of our lives. I want a puppy I can train as a therapy dog so I can visit the children’s hospital down the street or one of the retirement homes around us. Temperament and train-ability are paramount for us on this next dog. As much as I have loved every one of my rescues (RIP Petey, best boi in avatar,) none of them could ever be service dogs.
$2500 for a lab pup is ridiculous unless both parents are GCHB or better My 6 month old chocolate female pups dad was just GCH and the bitch was just a good looking chocolate and she only cost $850
Ona similar topic, Maggie became a woman last weekend, so we will be sitting down with the vet to discuss breeding options and timelines. He had originally said to shoot for the 2nd heat, but I have since read that still may be too young, Anybody ever done bred their pup? Ideas on finding a stud remotely close to Jax. or any other constructive thoughts? Hoping to find a stud service that would want pick of the litter as we are really only wanting to keep a boy and fill a couple houses of friends we know would love a big pup. Afterward we will be fixing Maggie. Anything over 4 would be sold.
Guess I’ll keep the CL door open. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/pet/d/chocolate-labrador-puppies/6768540157.html
The breeder for our female dachshund told us that if she was bred before she was 2.5 years old there'd be a pretty good chance we'd never know her full potential as a breed standard because before that time their full body chemistry hasn't been realized and a pregnancy messes with their body chemistry big time as with any animal. She should be going into heat for the third time within the next month but she will only be a little over 2 years old so we're going to wait until this summer to actually let her hang around our male full time when she's in heat. This past summer was absolutely insane once the heat started. The chemicals kick in and what you wind up with is a female who wants to mate and invites it and then almost instantly regrets it. Meanwhile the male just glazes over and turns into what we call the demon "Sexorcisto" (Pronounced "Sec-sor-see-sto" for effect). He goes on vacation when this starts.
Anyone have a good training book for a pup? It's been 10+ years since I've had a pup? Figured doing a little homework to prepare for the chaos again might help. Had an American bulldog for 11 years and recently fostered an english bulldog for a few months figured it's time to get me a new dog
Are you starting with a puppy or getting a young dog from a shelter? I think the “all positive”dog trainers on YouTube are great for puppies that are a blank slate. Zak George has a lot of great “all positive” content. https://www.youtube.com/user/zakgeorge21 If you’re getting a dog that has any kind of a history, I think the “balance” school of thought is much better. (Basically 90% positive reinforcement but 10% corrective modalities such as prong collars, spray bottles, loose change bottles, etc.) If you go this route, this Jeff dude is awesome. Definitely check out his threshold drill, so so good. https://www.youtube.com/user/SolidK9Training
Im just realistic that when your dog is lunging and growling on leash and basically going ape shit that you can get that behavior in line with a training treat. That dog wants to play or attack or protect or whatever, he says “fuck your treat.” That great has no value. Enter the spray bottle/prong collar.
Either going to a shelter or a rescue off pet finder but it will be less than a year old, ideally a puppy. The english bulldog I fosterd got messed up pretty good before we got him. 90% of the time he was awesome, would blackout and try to attack unprovoked every once in a while. He eneded up biting me in the face one night unprovoked (wasn't even staring at the bastard) and had to get stiches so I had to give him back. This was after behavioral classes and anxiety meds as well.
If that is the vet recommendation, we will probably go ahead and spay. Diapering 120 lbs of Mastiff is not for the faint of heart.
Kind of a scary morning for our Springer Spaniel, Millie, who has something called HGE. Anyone have any experience with it? It's not uncommon for her to have a stomach issue every once in a while but this morning was different. My wife, who is at home with our 1 month old son, asked me to come home and help with Millie since she was handling the baby. On my way I go ahead and call the vet and schedule a 2PM appt, which was their earliest. I get home about 10:15 and Millie is extremely lethargic, wont even look at any sort of food, has thrown up 4+ times at this point, and was crying to go out about every 30 min as well. Around 11:00 I follow her outside and watch her vomit and shit. The shit was a bloody liquid/jelly. She walked back up to the deck area dripping blood and then went and laid down trembling in the wet bushes. It was really one of the more pitiful things I've seen. I pulled her up, wrapping her half-limp body in a towel, and took her straight to the vet. As expected, my wife was hysterical and my adrenaline was pumping. Her physical exam was fine and her blood work was too, other than a slightly higher than normal red blood cell count, which is an indicator of HGE. Per the vet, "aggressive" treatment includes IVs for fluid replacement, nausea meds, and an antibiotic. I am supposed to go back and get her about 5:45 tonight. Thankfully, she should be fine.
Layla had it. She was fine after she received fluids and the meds. Be glad Millie got it on a weekday, because it ended up setting me back a grand.
We're getting our boys a goldendoodle for christmas. We need to pick which puppy and we've got it down to two. Any advice on choosing? They're both the color we want (though that may change), ones really curly and ones a little more straight/wavy. I kinda lean towards the straight/wavy but the curly one looks like a damn teddy bear and its just too much awesome. The curly one seems to be more mouthy but not sure if that's just a temporary teething thing or not.
I'd get a toy and toss it for both and see which one more naturally retrieves it My 6 month old pup was less mouthy than her sisters, but is now mouthy as crap
Fiancee and I have sworn to not adopt/rescue/foster until we're out of this condo and into a single-family home. Dog-less stinks... I don't get to go out in the freezing cold, praying for feces to drop before I go to bed... and I sleep in an extra 15minutes in the morning. It's terrible.
Cooper joined the family last night. 9 week old lab/hound mix (no clue really or how big he’s gonna get). Got him from the Atlanta humane society. Ready for some destruction and cold ass mornings. And yes there is a spongebob and patrick orniment on the family tree. Spoiler Spoiler 8 hours in already contemplating ending it all and jumping. Spoiler spoileried for siz
I guess grain free food is sketchy now, and we want to get gus on senior food. Any thoughts on wellness complete as a brand?
