Took the daggs for what was suppose to be a 1 hr, 3 mile hike. Turned into a 4 hr, 10 mile frantic chase through the jungle to track my brain-dead pointer who wandered off for no apparent reason. About thought we had to leave her for the night or come back later with flashlights and food. Scared the shit out of us. I had to run her down barefoot through a soggy estuary the last quarter mile. In thigh-deep quicksand mud. Don’t know if I’ll ever wash all the dirt off me and I’m pretty sure I caught some parasites crossing a river right next to a cow pasture. Good times.
I don’t think I’ll ever trust my dog to be off leash. Sucks, cause I love when a dog has some free roaming, but he’s a Husky.
I had one on her for most of the hike, was just trying to give her a little free beach time near the end. She loves it and has been their multiple times w/o issue. Plus our well-behaved dog will usually track her down and wring her neck out when she wanders away. It was complete system fail on all levels.
I met a dog with no eyes this weekend because of glaucoma. It was so damn sweet and was already practically echo-locating even though it lost its remaining eye just two weeks before that.
Blue Merle and... what’s the brown coloration called? They’re beautiful, very surprised they were still enough to take a picture.
Friend that is renting a room has a dog that's in heat. My boy is acting absolutely insane in pursuit of it. Can't wait for this to end and for both of them to be fixed.
I thought I saw it earlier, but did somebody mention CBD Oil to help with a dog's anxiety? My friends dog gets pretty wound up, sometimes too much, when she has interactions with other people/dogs.
I’m gonna ask our vet about it at our next appoint because my pup is the same way. She’s not aggressive whatsoever she just goes absolutely nuts when she sees other people or dogs, even if they’re on the literal other side of the neighborhood
Not knowing anything about your friend’s situation, I can say with 100% confidence and certainty that his/her dog is not being exercised enough.
So my dogs are really living to bark now anytime they hear soemthing outside. It's usually not a big deal, but it's getting worse and I want to start training them of fixing the habit before we have a kid and they wake it up.
This is Koa. Last March, my sister kinda tricked me into having this dog. Wasn’t looking for a dog and really haven’t had or wanted a dog my entire adult life. My daughter fell in love immediately and then in April, my sister passed after a long fight with cancer. So Koa, is our dog now and I love her dearly. That being said there’s a bit of a debate of what kind of dog she actually is. Based on some research and her mannerisms (overactive pawwing, butt wiggle) I’ve concluded that she’s part Aussie. Someone today mentioned that she looks like shes got some Catahoula. What do you guys think?
The eyes are 100% Aussie no doubt maybe catahoula but Aussies can have that merle type color as well I kinda think Aussie/Lab mix
The best dog I could ever hope for and I’m so mad at myself for being hesitant to have one for so long. Her greeting me at the door instantly makes my day better.
My wife was anti dog before our first dog. Her and that dog are attached at the hip. I had to get another so I could have a dog too.
Catahoulas also have the light eyes. It’s more than looks that base the Aussie end of it on. I’ve watched a million videos with Aussies and she behaves just like one
Australian shepherds are known for the light eyes.. catahoulas have them too, but catahoulas are particularly known for the "cracked glass" eyes. My wondermutt that I got from the rescue looks like a textbook heeler/australian shepherd cross. He's very much got the heeler demeanor, red ticking on the forelegs and face. Doesn't smell, ever, thanks to the dingo lineage in the heeler side. His fur/smell is very much like a cat's, super soft and only ever has a light scent of dust. Never needs baths. His back half looks like pure merle aussie but he has the heeler raccoon tail - but the rescue had him as a catahoula mix because he's got one cracked glass eye. I've never bothered with the DNA test or anything, he's the best dog ever regardless of his genetics.
He's the goodest boye. Today is actually the 5th anniversary of the day I brought him home from the shelter. edit - here's a better picture showing his coat.
that face though. You give her pretty much whatever she wants for sure, lol. She's gorgeous, I have such a huge soft spot for black and white dogs with blue eyes. I think we're looking at a border collie rescue next once we get moved into the new house.
Dude she was tough throughout her first year so I was tough with her. She’s settled down so much though and you’re absolutely right, all it takes is a look and I’m done.
Could be that too. I feel like there's some australian shepherd because they're notoriously neurotic, which he is about certain things despite overall having the stoic cattledog demeanor. All I know is this dog is always right by my side and never needs a leash - but he's always a fair distance away and if I ever look over at him he's just quietly watching me waiting for me to give him a command, or he's dozing. Right now, he's laying 4 feet away from me sleeping. If I get up and change rooms, he'll get up, follow me, lay down, and go back to dozing nearby. It's like having a teddy bear always within reach but never in the way. He loves to get attention but never "asks for it" - he soaks it up if you come to him but the rest of the time he just sits there quietly watching, typical stoic cattledog demeanor. He's incredibly gentle and careful with my daughter. He learns fairly complicated tricks in crazy short periods of time, is protective of the family, has never had so much as a single accident in the house in 5 years from the day I got him, and even though my wife really isn't a dog person, and we have two other dogs currently - he's the only one to have ever slept in our room. And not only that.. he snores. Terribly. And instead of kicking him out, she wears earplugs. If I had unlimited funds I'd just clone him over and over again and never have another dog ever. But failing that, I'll never *not* have one of these herding dogs ever again.
All of this, I feel it. It’s so weird because I’ve always loved dogs, (My sister always had dogs and she always had dogs for me to visit) I just never wanted to get attached due to sadness felt over dogs as a kid. The reason I’m so interested in what Koas breed is because of just about everything you mentioned. She’s literally behaviorally perfect for me.
Funny how the ones that you have to love up a bit are the ones that you get the most attached to. My boy had been returned to the shelter twice because he had aggression issues (he was shelter shocked... dogs that like peace and order and to be treated with dignity don't fare well in a shelter). I had to keep him on a leash whenever we let the other dog out of her crate, he had crazy anxiety about crates, resource guarding, food aggression etc. I think that makes it all that much more rewarding when they turn the corner.
