Up at our vacation property... First day we were here on of my labs and one of my mom's mutts got in a fight. My lab lost a chunk of her ear. $300 later the vet said they don't normally do much with those injuries, and gave her an antibiotic. Tried to keep her ear tied to her head so she couldn't flap it around, but that lasted a day. She didn't even realize something was missing.

Our dog is not used to having others around and is m very clearly an only dog. Any toy they play with, she must have which has led to some very funny scenes

So this just happened this morning and now I am fearing for the worst. Layla, my 2 yr old Olde English Bulldog, was chilling on the balcony this morning and I started hearing a dog yelp. I quit cleaning, start to head toward the balcony and she comes in yelping and favoring her left leg. (side note: she had TPLO surgeries on both back legs this spring). She stops yelping and starts to heavy pant. She wanted to go outside to potty, so I walked her real quick and she was noticeably limping on her back left. Now she's just laying down and won't eat her favorite treats yet. ER + Xray is $675, meanwhile I am still paying the remainder of her $7500 surgery. I'm letting her rest and seeing how it goes until heading in for Xrays, or is that the wrong move?

Just said goodbye to the absolute best boy in the world, about a month shy of his 13th birthday. He was my best friend, and I’m beyond heartbroken. We got him a year after we got married, so neither of us can remember what our lives together were like without him. I know we made the right decision, and he passed peacefully and quickly. There will never be another like him, and all the other dogs that we have and will have in the future will live a better life because of him. I never knew how much I could love something until he came into my life. You read about unconditional love, and he taught it to me tenfold. The best part of my day was getting home from work and seeing him run smiling and high stepping to meet me at the door. We were so lucky to have him. I’ll miss him more than I’ve ever missed anything in my life. RIP, Opie.

Came in here to post that my 11ish year old lab Bonnie had TPLO surgery this week on her rear left leg. We went for a leisure stroll last week and in the middle of a mile walk she was limping really bad.

She had the surgery done on her right rear leg in 2018 and the vet said if one ACL goes it’s a 50/50 shot the other will go. It was about $3,500 in 2018 and I said if/when the other one goes insurance is going to pay for that. Fast forward to 2023 and it’s about $5,500 so we’ll see how the claims process goes with nationwide.

IowaHuskerFan3 how in the world did you deal with TPLO surgery on both rear legs at the same time? $7,500 for 2 sounds like you got a little bit of a deal compared to me

Update on tplo surgery and insurance. Nationwide covers about $3,500 for that surgery. Certainly better than nothing but would have loved to get more. Guess the vet is just charging a nice premium, does a good job and proud of his work. Hey that’s why I took her to him!

I bring this guy home Thursdays and Saturdays each week to get him away from the shelter for awhile and get some exercise, shelter management asked me to start doing this awhile back. Today I was thinking to myself as we played some ball how much he's progressed and how calm he's been lately. An hour after I brought him back to the shelter today he bites three people in a social. Procedure will likely take place tomorrow.

    Gonna miss you good boy.

So our rescue had adopted a dog out in 2021 as a puppy, in January the adopter wants to return the dog because he says it is deaf and has been running into his kid, and because he is deaf he can't correct the behavior.
We get him back, find out that he isn't deaf, spend a ton of money on training, etc, and spend months looking for a home for him.
His foster for the last three months is a very experienced cat rescuer but wanted to help out with the dog, did a great job with him and he had been fine with her and the cats and her personal dog.

Finally find a good adopter, the mom and daughter spend two hours with the foster meeting the dog, with us telling them exactly how to introduce him to the cat they own, not to leave him alone out of the crate during the initial period, not to feed him and the cat in the same room, etc. They pick him up, then two hours later the wife goes out to the store, the husband brings the cat into the room with the dog out of the crate, and feeds them both at the same time in the room, turns his back, the dog finishes his food and goes to inspect the cat's food, cat hisses at him and the dog grabs the cat because he was guarding the food. Cat will be fine but now we have the dog back and the people want us to pay the $4k bill because they did the exact opposite of EVERYTHING we told them to do!!! I just fucking can't with people, I am so enraged with this it just makes me want to tell our board we should be a cat rescue going forward. We've had so much drama the last few years, so many people who have been in this for their own aggrandizement and are stunningly unable to work with other people, we have almost no dog fosters willing to do anything, and then there's shit like this. I get that people need to look out for themselves and after COVID their financial and emotional and mental wherewithal to do anything other than survive has been depleted, but fuck, it is just so damn frustrating trying to do this shit these days.

    Sorry, rant over.

People are the worst. They mean well, but still. Before taking my boy above home Saturday for play time a lady stopped me in the isle to ask about him as she was interested in adopting. She had two small kids with her and she let me know she has a cat at home. I tell her this dog can't be around cats (or any animals) and he doesn't do well with kids. She proceeds to tell me her cats been around dogs before and its totally fine. I bluntly tell her it's not about her cat, this dog will kill your cat the moment he lays eyes on it. He'll also bite your kids. She continues to argue why she thinks it can work. She also let it slip why she's interested in this particular dog... low adoption fee.

Speaking of which, next weekend is going to be insane, line for blocks hours before we open up insane. The Mars Company is sponsoring all adoptions, every animal we have, all free.

At this point I'm use to it. Surprised he's made it this long. When a dog starts getting assigned certain people to work with and personal enrichment plans, the end is near if they don't get adopted soon.
