I’ve only spun it once, but I thought it was at least better than the last few albums. I say that as someone that’s pretty concerned about their ability to write good songs anymore.
Song that most made people mad. P.H.: [Laughs.] M.C.: Well, the first one would’ve been “Puttin’ People on the Moon,” back from Dirty South. P.H.: It’s very true. It was the fall of 2004, and I just remember night after night, people shooting us birds and yelling shit at us when we’d play that song. Fortunately, we were really loud, so we really didn’t have to hear it much. We could see ’em doing it — you know, they always had their baseball caps on backward because they don’t know how to put ’em on correctly. They don’t know how to wear a fuckin’ baseball hat, so they probably don’t know how to fuckin’ vote. They’d rather look backward than forward. What the song means polarized a lot of people, and I was honestly shocked by that ’cause I didn’t think of it as something that would be really polarizing. To me, it’s not even so much political as, you know, being a decent person. Don’t be a fuckin’ piece of shit. M.C.: From the time the song was new to the time it came out on the record, it became a lot more polarizing than it had been just those few short months earlier. That’s how quickly we were headed in that direction at that time. P.H.: When I wrote the song, it seemed like by pointing the finger at Reagan I was also pointing the finger at W. This all started with Reagan. I mean, the stuff that’s been on the news — with the Supreme Court leak and all that shit — you know, that all started with Reagan. Reagan realized that they were gonna lose the midterms in ’86 if they didn’t play a hand to really get what is now known as the Christian right before that was even that knowable a thing, getting the moral majority behind them and Jerry Falwell and all that. They drummed up this whole overturning Roev. Wade and made this rallying cry. All of a sudden, they knew they had this percentage of the vote that would be locked in, that would vote for them even if it went against every one of their best interests, financially or in every other way, because they were gonna vote about this one issue. M.C.: I’ve taken to referring to Reagan as the first President Trump. So he was nicer and more well mannered? Trump was a con man; Reagan was a corporate pitchman. Po-tay-to po-tah-to. https://www.vulture.com/2022/06/drive-by-truckers-interview-best-songs-welcome-2-club-xiii.html
Stopped listening to these lefty fucks years ago. Was greatly offended by the words of Uncle Frank and the anti lake life undertones.
I love this. It took this genius 20+ shows to realize that isbell isn’t the right wing scum bag that he hoped he was.
I know this guy in real life and let me tell y’all, he absolutely loves Morgan Wallen. He’s seen him over 20 times since he got caught saying the n-word.
Imagine quoting secondary market prices as an indication of popularity. Further, anyone willing to pay to see Morgan Wallen is a person I’m fine never, ever interacting with.
I paid about that to see Turnpike at Red Rocks. Granted, I should have just waited and there were tix to be had cheaper, after they announced all the other dates. Secondary market was through the original ticket distributor, AXS. I believe Ticketmaster is doing some dynamic pricing for some shows. Absolutely the going rate for Morgan Wallen in a 15k ticket arena was $500 per. Unimaginable. Here is a link to his next show https://concerts.livenation.com/mor...lle-indiana-06-16-2022/event/05005B6CE4C76550
How the fuck does that random ass dude command that $ on the open market? Is he good? I was shocked when a band called Whiskey Myers, whoever the fuck that is, sold out an outdoor show here for next month.
I can't explain it for Wallen. Whisky Myers is riding their Yellowstone exposure to mass popularity. They are a Texas band, non-radio.
People love Wallen. Radio plays the shit out of him. He goes on tour with all the biggest mainstream acts. I'd never even heard of the guy until that video surfaced and have only noticed him since because I'm amazed they play him on the radio after that.
I mean, you know exactly what it is. He was already in the Bro Country circles pre-scandal and then the particular thing he said + the fact that his fan base is made up of the right wing anti-cancel culture blob and, voila, he's as big as he's ever been. He's an avatar for that demographic.
I admittedly don't know anything about radio. Haven't listened to anything in line 15 years. But I was assuming there would be corporate backlash. The Nascar guy was banned for a while and I feel like that's a similar demo.
I’ve got some intel that Dawes and Bahamas are about to announce a co-headline Summer/Fall tour in the South/Midwest later this week. Two sets with Dawes backing for Bahamas and Bahamas playing w/ Dawes each night. Hadn’t heard anything from Bahamas since like 2014 but he’s solid
He’s a Canadian folk/indie musician. Kinda a weird dude. Used to open for the Lumineers, Wilco, Robert Plant, etc. He did a YouTube session with a little band called the 400 Unit last year.
I've always wondered, you think Browan Lollar regrets being the only 400 Unit member to not come back to the band that night everyone quit when Jason had a bad night?
I think he’s doing alright with his current band. Wasn’t there a rumor he died like a decade ago or am I thinking of another guitarist?
I never heard he @died. He just quit 400 Unit and shortly after joined up with Janeway. I'd imagine his quality of life and bank account touring with SP&BB is significantly lesser than his would be had he came back with the rest of the band to Isbell.
Catching up. Thought this was cool at Red Rocks a month ago. He also covered Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac and absolutely shredded while his daughter danced around with Amanda on stage. Really cute. Really awesome.
Not sure what he’s talking about. I’ve seen Dawes in bham multiple times and it was incredible every time.
7.9/10 show in Williamsburg, VA tonight. Amanda played with them. Kinda stock otherwise, Decoration Day closer was legit
For anyone that's been to the Ryman before, any last second recs on what type of seating is best to target?
Floor seating can get rough the further back and under the balcony you get. Balcony is my personal favorite unless you’re like first 5 or so rows on the floor
