I care. I like these discussions. I really struggled getting through the book. I liked it and hated it at the same time. Loved the themes and the politics and the social commentary, but the execution was so long and strung out. I had no desire to read any of the other books. But after watching the movie, I kind of want to read Messiah. Seeing that it's 1/3rd the length of Dune, I probably will. Love The Expanse books and the show. The last book is coming out next month. Will be sad when it's over.
Yea re: massive, complex world building that makes sense and doesn’t contain a bunch of plot holes or inconsistencies will always get my utmost respect. It takes a massively intelligent person to do that. So I’ll always admire Herbert. But the novel was just kinda long winded and dorky. But it was also like 50 some odd years ago, so I can’t really hold that against him. Sci-fi/fantasy peeps were mad dorky like that back then.
Was pretty blown away by the film. Glad I knew it ended kind of abruptly (was the "Part 1" at the beginning added post-release because of backlash to the ending?), but I would've gladly sat there and watched 3 more hours. DV is an absolute master, particularly with sci-fi. I've stopped and started the novel several times by now, but I'm feeling re-invigorated to actually finish it this time. So so glad the sequel has been greenlit.
Saw it in IMAX yesterday, and pretty much loved everything about it. Second to whoever said some dialog was difficult to pick up. Will watch on HBO with subtitles to pick that up. Gonna go again in regular theater because I promised my 9yo grandson I'd take him to see it.
Easy. "It's like a wife, but they aren't married". He will have 4,000 questions, but that won't be one of them.
I actually ready it for the first time when I was pretty young so I context clued a lot of it, still missed a lot
Saw it in IMAX last night. Totally worth. Visuals and score were just insane. If last night was an indication, there isn't going to be much drop off for weekend two. 715 IMAX show on a Wed night and it was packed.
Curious how much theaters lost to viewers staying at home. Also curious how the finances worked out fine the studio.
Just read the book and then watched the movie. I get why people think it’s “dense” because there are a whole lotta made up words, which requires a little more presence while reading. But, there isn’t a lot of subtext, Herbert mostly force feeds you the concepts. Great book, made the movie way more enjoyable.
It's mildly conceivable that 8000 years in the future, at the far reaches of the galaxy, there might be some new words.
My wife hasn't read the book and is referring to various Dune groups as the Atreyu's, the Haduken's, and the Fremulon's, all of which I've adopted
I've always thought of Star Wars as being lifted from Westerns rather than from SF. However, https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/dune-shaped-star-wars/
Both of them are more high fantasy in space vs hard sci-fi but other than that, sandy planets, and standard Heroic Journey plot, I don’t see a lot of similarities
Watched on hbo max the other night not knowing anything and loved it. Going tonight to see it in imax with a couple friends and I think I’ll like it even more now somewhat knowing the characters and universe. Might get into the books because everything I’ve read or listened to on podcasts has really intrigued me.
Loved the second watch. the way Denis did the gom jabbar scene is world class, using the cuts away to Jessica both with her knowledge of the misery within and use of the litany against fear to explain his training without needing to show it. Just brilliant.
Those things you mention aren’t ancillary, that’s a lot of what made the first Star Wars what it was. Especially in the context of the 60s and 70s when there was less variety.
I watch that, and I thank the hollywood deities that picked this guy to do the movie. To have such a skilled filmmaker have this level of devotion to the source material was a pretty big fucking ask.
The score was really, really good. Only minor adjustment I would have made is during Duncan Idaho’s last stand I would have liked if the director had went with “Let the bodies hit the floor”.
I have one complaint about the music, and it’s that they used those stereotypical Arabic/Middle Eastern wailing vocal tracks that you hear in almost every tv show or movie set in the desert.
Like this: Every time I heard it it took me out of the movie because I was thinking about how unoriginal it was.
Yeah that was used a lot in the tv series too If it’s actually traditional to Islam, in the book, if I remember correctly, the fremen are descendants of Islamic/Buddhist crossover believers or something like that
I am the exact opposite and loved it and had the main kind of wail or w/e anytime Paul was realizing his path stuck in my head for a few days after
Okay if the Fremen are supposed to inherit some cultural motifs from Islam then I guess it’s not as bad
yeah parents were both bad drunks. But frankie enjoyed some magic shrooms and inspired a lot of the first book
