Really good savings compared to gas, home charging is where Im making tons of cost reductions. I still can't get used to not going to a gas station and fueling up at home only.
I’m still coasting on my 10k free SC miles and haven’t had to pay the .39 or .44 you frequently see in NYC area. Thankfully the efficiency with city driving is insane.
Not a lighting owner but would imagine the go to would be a Nema 14-50 outlet right? With that battery size that's what I would go with. I have a nema 10-30 for my model Y and that does about 5 kw per hour, that works great for me but my battery size is "only" 81kWh. If you have the lighting long range your rocking a 131 kWh battery, that's a pretty big difference.
Would definitely do at least 40 amp for a 100+ kwh vehicle if you’re already going through the hassle
I was hoping the $0.39/kwh charge in SW Florida was a seasonal uptick and it would go down in the summer. But no, looks like they kept the rates high.
Think that's pretty on par with most of the country. The ones I stopped at in South Carolina last week were $0.36/kWh. Real savings is at home where your paying like $0.10 a kWh, or if you're lucky like me charging at work for "free"
I got the 48 amp hardwired Juicebox for my Mach E. Have never been able to get the app to connect. If you care about that maybe look elsewhere. Otherwise, it charges fast?
I get $0.09/kwh for the first 1000 kwh from my power company, then it becomes $0.13/kwh after 1000 kwh are used. There is also a difference for fuel vs non fuel and time in day, but it gets way too complicated quickly. I just focus on charging after 9pm when I know the cost should be lowest.
My parking deck at work has a charger. Plug that in once a week and leave it all day, and I am charging for free once a week. It’s perfect
39c/kWh is almost gas prices. That’d be $20 to fill up a model 3 and you’d have to almost double that to get gas car range so $40 relative. Which is ~11 gallons of gas. Most cars are probably 14 gallons? So maybe like 22% off at best. Supercharging really kills their savings.
Alright, got the app for my charger working. Wasn’t that hard, just needed to follow instructions. Question - better to set preferred charge times on the car, charger, or both? I just assume Ford will handle it better so setting on the car and leaving the charger settings wide open
I don’t have an EV so I’m just spitballin I would set the restricted charge schedule on the charger. That way ensures you’re at your home base and are OK with charging at certain times.
Don’t have an EV yet, but glancing over Reddit from time to time seems like the charging scheduling can be somewhat finicky so I’d control at the charger as well.
I don't have any time of use with the electric company so I just pick the level I want to charge to. For me personally I charge to 70% Monday - Thursday and then I'll take it up to 90% on Friday. I charge at work so do the one higher charge on Friday to try and get me to Monday. On the weekend though, if I'm driving around a lot I'll supercharge if I'm getting under 20%.
Yeah, the home charge thing would be interesting. I'm in Alabama so forget the gub encouraging anything EV. I'd love to get the ID.Buzz, but would have to see a pretty substantial cost savings over our gas vehicles (which all get ~20mpg in the city, and we don't drive much).
many communities without EV charging incentives don’t really need them tbh. If you’re paying 0.09/kwh you’re always going to come out way ahead of gas engine propulsion.
NEMA 14-50 and a random mobile charger plug (technically 2x of each, since my wife has a plugin hybrid). I have the pro station ford branded charger thing, but havent taken it out of the box. 80amp would be nice but I don't really need it. A 14-50 is a nice plug to go with just because every car works with it. Works just as well with my lightning as it did my old tesla as it does with my wife's hybrid.
Took the Y on a mini road trip to Fort Lauderdale and back yesterday. Started at 90%, ran 48% of the battery to go 125 miles at ~75 mph using driver assist and cruise control. AC was obviously cranking hard because of the 115 degree heat index. Hit the super charger in Sunrise and made it home with 26% left. Energy analyzer said I needed 900 kwh to pre-cool the car for 15 minutes at 3pm after being inside for a few hours, this summer has been ridiculous in Florida. I suppose interstate summer travel is probably harsh on range, hoping in the winter I'll get closer to 300-315 miles going 65 on back roads.
I dont know where you'll end up, but 65 on backroads will do a lot more than 75 on highways. It takes awhile to adjust to it but w/ distance travel there's a weird sweet spot where the slower you go, the faster you arrive at your destination (obv to a point) And yeah, extreme heat in Florida right now isn't doing you a lot of favors.
It's probably somewhere around 70, I saw the expected charge at destination prediction go up when I went down from 80 to 75 to 70.
hi I’m getting a Q4 e tron Prestige I have an electrician coming to quote the 220V 14-50 plug plug in the garage next week. any charging station recommendations? I’d like to be able to easily control charging between midnight and 6am when power rates are low and the Audi software seems to be pretty clunky managing that
any current or previous mach e owners willing to answer some questions, let me know. I'll DM you some questions.
I’ve been using the super charger at Wawa for about a month that I’ve had my Model X. New house has a Tesla wall charger. Honestly not nearly as big of an inconvenience as I was expecting even having to use the super charger once a week.
I'm happy with my Electrify America charger that I got because EA was in cahoots with VW at the time of purchase, but I remember liking the Grizzl-E chargers from Canada.
You live in the cold? If so, Chargepoint or Grizzl-E. The Grizzl-E cable is a bitch and gets real stiff anytime the temps drop. I've loved my Chargepoint - make sure to check if there are any rebates from your local utilities or state for installing a smart charger.
Camped two nights in a row this past weekend, total battery hit was 18% with AC running maybe over half the time, just incredibly convenient and efficient
Kansas City so sometimes. The charger will be in my garage which has an insulated door so that’ll help some
confirmed work chargers are free so will just do a 220V plug at home for now and use the included charger when I need to
BTW I know most (all?) in here are buying new, but my MB mechanic confirmed this week that they have a fair number of Teslas in the shop with 10 y/o batteries that are dead. Cost of replacement is high enough that it doesn't make sense to do it. Prius, etc., is a different case b/c of replacement cost. Anyhow, thought I'd mention since I was surprised at the number of used Tesla being sold out of a place near my house.
Super helpful to know. With it being peak hurricane season down in Florida, trying to figure it how long I could use camp mode for if a storm knocks the power out. Did you buy the Mattress custom fit for the Y?
Yes sir. Cheap Chinese one on Amazon for $50. Works great. Good rule of thumb seems to be 7-12% range loss per 10 hours of camping. Suppose it would be on the higher end of that in Florida with hot weather all night working the AC.
Decided to take the plunge on a 14-50 plug in the garage for my Y, charging with my 12a was fine but I'm ready for something quicker. Install right below my panel was $500 all in, decent price.
