I haven’t been following that closely of late- did they ever do anything with the super capacitor outfit they purchased a couple years back? Can’t remember the name of the company, but there were rumors that they were going to incorporate some of that tech to allow for faster recharge times.
There are several companies whose self driving technology is more advanced than Tesla's. Tesla is just the only one who uses paying customers as beta testers and presents their technology as market ready.
I told you to fuck off because your post was condescending. You essentially said, “I don’t think you’re right based on my anecdotal experience, but I’ll humor you”, all while you are admitting you hadn’t really followed the industry shifts in years. You’re welcome for the info.
I think you are referring to the Maxwell deal, but no they actually sold the company last year. Also people originally theorized the deal was for capacitor technology but in reality it had to do with a patent they had on dry electrode battery cell production, that information Tesla kept possession of when they resold “Maxwell”. a link to what I’m referring to: https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/07...cell-tech-for-lithium-ion-batteries-retained/
If it came off as condescending then I apologize. It wasn’t meant to be. I’ve used the self driving feature a number of times and haven’t had any issues.
Didn’t realize Tesla stopped using LiDAR/radar for their self driving. Always thought that was slick. What a cheap ass.
Yup that’s the one. I remember they claimed to have made a breakthrough in dry cells but at the time there were a couple of people making that claim with no real evidence. Hence I thought the super capacitor stuff was more realistic. Thanks for the link.
I think Musk creates a lot of hype for his products which creates a smoke screen for reality. The reality is his “autopilot” is nice for commuters on highway, the other side of that coin is their “self driving” doesn’t exist and is basically a way for them to tack on $7,000 of margin to their cars for essentially vapor ware. As far as technology goes, Googles road map with Waymo is currently far more effective and actually working in real life. I don’t think of the difference between the two companies as much of a Lidar vs cameras thing but more of pre-mapped cities/routes vs AI learning. And Google is currently kicking their ass at that + AI is an insanely hard problem to solve but according to Musk it’ll be done next year (as he’s said for 6 years now).
They never used Lidar. They’ve never said why they dropped radar but I’d guess it relates to the Florida deaths they had with the semi, or the “phantom braking” issue they kept having with it, but it could also be a Musk ego thing or chip shortage idk.
My understanding, beyond the reported quote from Musk about two eyes and a eight cameras, is that Tesla believes the only real useful data that radar gave was capable of being learned by data that cameras could provide. And by having cameras only, you avoid issues for when the data from radar sensors and the cameras conflict which cause system errors. The decision was seemingly made that they’d rather spend money developing the AI to get the cameras to work better rather than spend the money figuring out how to make the system work with multiple sensor types which could cause errors. And as you said in your other post, the AI will be very difficult to figure out.
Yea I mean we are saying the same thing basically, system errors would be phantom braking, and radar doesn’t help with stationary objects or objects over head like overpasses, street lights, etc; which was a problem in the semi truck accidents where the model 3 would go under the trailer of the semi.
I get it. Both ships and planes work off autopilot a lot of the time. My personal feeling is on a highway or congested road setting relying of sensors not failing and causing an accident is risky. Just my personal feeling today. Could change in 10 years.
They are probably pretty close if not better than normal drivers and their ability will on continue to increase exponentially.
Almost a reason why planes and boats have multiple redundancies and maybe cars should too. But subsidies and the US govt.
While I agree with your concerns around the tech and it’s maturity; I would recommend you start looking around during your commute (if you have one) to see how many of the drivers are distracted by looking at their phone, eating, putting on makeup, or other tasks which take their attention off the road. It’s shocking how normalized distracted driving has become.
Now Doc, Stephen A Smith is a dear personal friend of mine. We are Godfathers to each others children. We began as rivals in the US Navy Fighters Weapons School but grew to be the closest of friends.
Has Tesla even figured out how to make a car that would meet the basic fit and finish requirements of the Big 3?
It could go 0-60 in 1s and it wouldn’t be worth that build quality. I’m super sensitive to cabin creeks. That shit would would cause me to ludicrous mode right off a bridge
My parents keep buying them and they have the dumbest shit go wrong like a back window will get stuck down on a 2 year old car or the moonroof will make way too much noise when closed.
Yep, said he was bullied so bad they put him in the hospital. More likely he was just a dick as a kid.
I had a ‘04 Ford Explorer that toward the end you had to shove a flat head screwdriver into the steering wheel to change gears. Why didn’t I consider a banana?!
