I'm finally getting through Ender's Game and trying to decide if I should pick up the rest of the series.

Are the others worth the read, and if so should they be read in publishing order or chronological?

    TIA

After Ender's Game its Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind. Speaker for the Dead is worth a read. Xenocide and Children of the Mind are ok. Each book is less exciting than the one before it in the series. I read them all for closure. I highly recommend you read Ender's Shadow. It is the first book in the Shadow series which follows Bean's perspective during the events of Ender's Game. The rest of the series follows events on earth after Ender leaves. I have only read Ender's Shadow and Shadow of the Hegemon so I can't attest to the whole series.

I've heard from everyone that Ender's Shadow was awesome.

I thought Speaker for the Dead was pretty good, but not as good as Ender's Game itself. I thought there was on called "Speaker for the Living" guess I'm wrong.

I greatly enjoyed Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide. Never read Children of the Mind I don't think.

For next book of this series/subject should I read Xenocide or Ender's Shadow? It's been 2 years since I read Speaker for the Dead, and I thought it was decent. I've heard Ender's Shadow is as good as any of them.

    Thoughts?

Can't believe this bro is a Mormon writing these books.

Ok -- I won't even touch Xenocide then.

    What about Ender's Shadow?

    I haven't read it.

Xenocide was enough for me to give up on the series although Ender's Shadow sounds legit.

Should I read Ender's Game or Cloud Atlas first? Obviously know what Arkie Proud will say, even if he hasn't read Ender's Game.

Haven't read Cloud Atlas, so I can't say which is better, but Ender's Game is a super quick and easy read. I'd knock it out in a day or two and then start on Cloud Atlas.

I've read both... well, all of Ender's Game (twice) and half of Cloud Asshole. Ender's Game is a classic. Loved it. Quick and easy, but deep and meaningful.

I read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. Might go for Speaker of the Dead as well.

There is an upcoming movie that combines those 1st two.

Bean is a little bad ass btw.

Speaker for the Dead, to me, was almost completely different from Ender's Game with the only similarity of having Ender as the main character but all grown up.

Still a good book though -- I enjoyed.

I don't think I ever read Xenocide and Children of the Mind but I loved Ender's Game and enjoyed Speaker for the Dead as well.

Downloaded the whole series yesterday so I could reread it sometime soon.

Feel free to let us know what you think as you read.

Thoughts after the first few chapters
So people are capped out at the number of kids they can have? But Ender's family went above the limit by having him? But they also then gave his life up to go in space and fight. Think I read that right. But he's only 6 wtf. Interesting stuff. I really liked the relationships that were developed. Starting a book is always interesting because you don't know how you'll feel about the characters/if they'll be formed well, and I liked Ender (and his sister) and thought a lot of backstory was explained well in just a few pages.

Lotta pressure on him though, especially with his "recruiter" saying he's the best ever. Don't want him picked on too much though :ohdear: So hopefully he proves himself early on.

Also, the beginning of each chapter with all those people talking about him was super intriguing. Felt like they'd be in a room with a ton of monitors, watching shit as it was happening.
Like I said last night, I really like this book so far. And it seems like it'll be a short read, so depending on my schedule, I should be done with it within a few days.

It's a fun fast read. I read it early in high school so I am interested to see an older perspective on it.

  20. I first read this book in early high school and got completely into the series. I still re-read Ender's Game at least once a year - still my favorite book OAT. I own both the Shadow series and the Ender series. The Shadow series is definitely worth reading first after you finish EG. The Ender series kinda had me bored after a while. I picked up Ender In Exile not long ago and I plan to start reading that here soon.

Just realized that Card has been publishing a ton of Ender books lately... Have yet to read A War of Gifts, Shadows In Flight, and Earth Unaware + (Shadows Alive later). I'm highly interested in getting to Earth Unaware.

Really hoping that the EG movie won't suck. The cast list looks decent/good, but I know too well that Hollywood will find a way to make this movie into a polished piece of shit.

LKRFN88jp Let us know what ya think of it when you finish.

Pikopdropov What's your perspective on it?

So... One thing that always bothered me about Ender's Game is the selection process. They treat Ender as if he is THE MAN, and the shining star of all students due to his scores/monitor, whatever.

Anyway, they also say that both his sister and brother scored extremely high as well and that's why he was commissioned to be born (hence "Third"). Aka they were hoping to get the best qualities of each sibling.

So maybe his siblings weren't Ender good, but they make it sound like they were still extremely unique. I wonder why they weren't invited to join the school as well, just not have the expectations they had for Ender. If the range of traits to be selected is that small, then it seems strange that they'd have such high expectations of Ender.

    Make sense?

Never got around to finishing it because I got super busy with classes then wanted to read The Passage for the Book Club. I think I'll restart it when I take some vacation in a couple weeks.

Only reading Ender's Game again is to read the Shadow series. Not necessary?

One thing I'll say about Ender's Game is I get annoyed with how much of a pussy he can be.

The only thing that makes him seem 7 is the fact the author says it over and over and over... Regardless, in the next book he's still a pussy about killing in war and such.

Just finished Ender's Game this weekend, fucking loved it. Not sure if I want to read more.

They are making a film with the kid from Hugo as Ender and Harrison Ford as Graff. Going to be difficult to get everything in there but looking forward to it regardless.

graff talks to bean and peter about this in bean's series where peter has more of a role.

everyone should read the shadow series. his new books are out and are also quick and easy reads. love the bean/shadow series.

another case for the shadow series is that it contains most of the characters from ender's game and a few new ones so it's easy to start out invested. talks about what happens on earth after ender beats the buggers
