And this sounds as defeatist as it is, but that would be a penalty against Everton (it was correctly called not a penalty)
Wait so he broke his own leg by getting it stuck under him? They won't show replays, which, no, I don't wanna see the gruesomeness, but ...?
I don’t see how that’s a red. The injury is obviously catastrophic, but it wasn’t caused by the tackle, nor was the tackle malicious to begin with. Just a really unfortunate situation.
The challenge was the reason his leg was stuck under him. It was a 100% red if that's what you're asking.
Again, really high and really late. There was nothing good about that challenge. I'm a fan of Son, but that was really bad.
Did you actually see the challenge? He clips him around the upper shin it's not really high, really high is above the knee, gomes trips leg and aurier and he collides. The violence is after the foul
Over under 10 minutes of stoppage? edit: given that I'm minutes behind on the stream, y'all might already know. edit again: 12 minutes. I believe it.
Yes i saw the actual challenge. And yes, I realize the leg didn't break from his foot, but the challenge is being so late is what caused his foot behind him. We are gonna see this from two entirely different perspectives and as such I don't think we will agree on this. Edit: there is context to that challenge too, seeing as Son had gotten an arm in the face by Gomez not 3 minutes before.
It was fairly given as a yellow. It’s a horrible injury, but it was a freak outcome from a fairly normal play. I hope we get it appealed down.
Yeah true. That behind the scenes documentary thing will firmly remain unwatched. The vast majority of those watching that will be rival fans relishing in our ineptitude.
Ok, so not as high as I thought, but still very late and studs up. Tell me again how that's not a red other than Son's a good dude?
1. He was late 2. Made no play on the ball 3. Studs up. It’s not the most egregious tackle ever, but there’s no way you can bitch about him getting a red there
There’s just no way that’s a red. Atkinson, who had little control of the game to begin with, had an emotional reaction to a freak outcome. I understand the shock of the situation, but it was handled extremely poorly by the FA, to no one’s surprise. The entire game was horrible, from both teams, both managers, and the entire officiating crew.
I can and I will. Frame by frame analysis, what gets Gomes off balance enough to lead to this incredibly regretful injury is Son's tucked back foot that comes through as Gomes is taking his next step. Son's front exposed studs foot lands on top of Gomes' right foot, can't tell if the studs even catch him or if it's the back of Son's ankle on top of Gomes toes, but it ends up sliding off and onto the turf anyways.
If you're going frame by frame then you can see Son even kick out with those studs up on the front foot. He went in late trying to foul hard. Was everything after a freak occurrence? Yes. But Son's actions never looked like there were good intentions in mind, and certainly not "a professional foul"
What turned it into a nightmare injury was Aurier's incoming presence complicating Gomes' landing. These challenges happen and 995/1000 don't lead to scenarios like this. The sympathetic part of me says that Everton deserved to have a point and we shouldn't appeal the red, it looks classless to do so. Bad optics, as they say.
We can still all agree that Atkinson sucks, Richarlison needs to stay on his damn feet, and VR is a waste.
I expect incompetence from EPL refs in general, but the way they’ve gone about implementing VAR is still surprisingly bad. I don’t think it could be executed worse.
Such bullshit that likely cost us 3 points. Very relieved to hear Gomes had a successful surgery and is expected to heal completely, though.
