If Kenny Mayne was making three million a year, I’m not sure why he was slumming it with the normal people at Publican Tavern at ORD
Rome owns his show which at its peak was nationally syndicated all over the country. There is a ton of money in that. ESPN wasn't cutting him that check (when he worked there).
I read this a few months ago and I really don't understand paying anyone that much to read off of cards or a teleprompter. Those ESPN NFL shows are complete dogshit. I don't know anyone who watches them.
I would assume they're paying her that much in part because of what Berman was making to do NFL Countdown before her. I would be curious to know how much she makes compared to people like Menefee at FOX and Brown at CBS.
It's normal for cool people to get rich and not become pretentious douches. Kenny apparently is a cool dude that got rich.
There needs to be an ESPNSr channel for the elderly and blind. Migrate all of this content to that platform. ESPN then tries again with some younger folks... jk they'll fuck that up too. Give up.
It's certainly nothing new but I imagine it's gotten even more awful to work there as a behind the scenes person in the last few years. I'm sure the hours suck and they don't get paid a ton while there's 300 different analysts making bank while mailing it in with analysis you could get from a message board.
Deitsch did an interview with Mayne for The Athletic. This is one of the questions... Dan Patrick, Le Batard, Bill Simmons, Trey Wingo and many, many others have left ESPN and have found not just success outside of it, but greater success after leaving ESPN. If that didn’t factor in your decision, have you since reflected on the possibilities that are out there? My hate for Trey Wingo is known, as is Deitsch's love for him going back more than a decade. But what is he doing now that is better than his ESPN gig where he was making (reportedly) $6M a year? Especially to put him in the same group as those other three.
Kenny Mayne interview with LeBatard yesterday was great. Its on Dan's podcast feeds fwiw. Trey Wingo was bad on ESPN. He was too loyal of a soldier and was whored as the useful idiot that promoted the Shield at all times. Makes sense why if he was getting paid that much to do it.
Feel like he was one of those guys they moved around to a bunch of different shows but could never find the right fit for him
I thought he was fine on college football games There are some people there who are way way worse didn’t consume any of his content on the radio or anything else he did
Like Dan Lebatard said this week, he got the job because of his last name but I think he proved he had some talent once he had it. His weekend observations with stugotz was pretty good and he’s decent at game calling. Maybe he’ll end up with meadowlark but he seems best at live sports.
I think they just benefit from being on gym and sports bar tv's. No one actually seeks them out to watch them.
