ceo was an SB Nation angel investor so wouldve thought he'd try to find a way to keep Banner Society guys employed on the backend of all this. Really bad decision by Vox.
They said on the podcast last night that Vox Media thought the Fullcast was too internal and didn't appeal to the masses. Some of the evidence the Vox team provided was a Spencer tweet of a Nick Saban gif, with the guy saying he didn't get the joke because he didn't recognize the guy in the gif, Nick Saban. Vox seems real in touch with college sports and its fans.
Assuming they all get fired, I have to assume they will start their a new CFB Vertical on their own. I doubt they want to do a paywall site but until ad dollars improve it might be the only way should they go that route. That said, I could see an ad/donation model working because they have a loyal fan base and there are still sponsors out there who will want to associate with all those guys.
I rarely actually read his stuff (I find I like him better in small, Twitter sized bits), but I enjoy following him and I’m sad for him he’s out of a job. He‘ll get hired quickly though I’m sure
Spencer Hall just got released to go win a Pulitzer. I’ve been calling that he will win one for 5 years now. Go write a book EDSBS
Spencer always posts a long form on the opening day of college football every year. These two are my favorites. https://www.bannersociety.com/2015/9/8/20840136/broke https://www.bannersociety.com/2016/9/2/20840137/buffalo
This is such an incredible line: "Bison would make fantastic linebackers, terrible safeties, and the best fullbacks ever created."
Broke destroyed me. I grew up in the same environment that Spencer did and the visuals he painted reminded me a ton of my childhood. I also agree with every last word in Broke.
I am not totally familiar with how USA Today’s web space works, but I believe these sites are basically just franchises that someone can buy. I might be totally off base though.
The Athletic’s State of the Program series is really solid but reading about Marshall this morning made me really miss Bill C’s team previews. His ESPN conference capsules are fine but it’s just not the same. I should be taking a shit, reading about Tulsa right about now. Take me back.
Is SB nation as a national platform still a thing? The twitter feed got so annoying a couple of years ago I had to unfollow and since all these guys left, I realized I haven’t thought of SB nation in years
