Spoiler: 42% WILL IT BE ALIENS?!?!?! Liked that Cox actually went to the dome/spoke candidly about things. Good stuff. Knew it wouldn't work but the "and that was the first suicide" was obviously a tell that things were going to get worse. Rennie isn't as clueless as I thought he was, wanting to take out the idiots who raped/have been causing a ton of problems. Still wonder wtf Junior's plan actually is, since the bodies have obviously decayed a bit. With Nebrasketball + Duke/UNC tonight, I won't get to read as much as I'd like, but will still bang some of it out.
I made it through the mundane part. It isn't super interesting yet, but I'm starting to enjoy and get invested.
Spoiler: 73% Yeah, King tried to set up the "I'm a master diagnostician who can identify illnesses from across the street" a chapter or two ago, but it felt forced then I see why now. Before the leather masks and weird symbol on the Apple TV, I was still hoping for some faction of the govt that falls outside of Cox's chain of command or we're firing missiles at the dome to test it as much as to pretend we're trying get them out but it really was us all along. The world's largest meth lab in the same town that we put a dome on is too big a coincidence for an alien race that shouldn't really care about policing a human meth problem. Unless it turns out to be humans after all or unless there's a real good reason given about why aliens want to stop us from smokin glass, I'm going to be unhappy.
Look, Lord Proprietor of TMB Book Club, I'm just saying that I'm struggling through it. That doesn't mean I'm not going to read it. Moreover, I have three family members in three different book clubs and they have people flake on a book with some regularity. The point is to discuss and socialize, not enforce Draconian reading rules.
Plus, the discussions seem extremely disjointed as is. Someone reads it in a week; someone reads it in two months. Often people don't even reply to each other's posts. I just don't give a shit if someone doesn't want to read a book. I assume people interested in discussing it with me will do so. Those who aren't, won't. What's the difference between someone not posting that read it and someone not posting that didn't read it?
I'm still mixed up with all the characters. 15% through is my guess Spoiler What's the deal with all the kids talking about Halloween when bad shit happens?
Welcome to TMB Book Club, where we don't give a shit about other faggotty book club rules. Where you can quit reading a book just because because we aren't bitches and we don't conform.
Only a masthead picture. This is way to big and if I cropped it to size, it would be illegible. Ours now is Thinking of changing it to this: Or suggestions?
20% through Spoiler Clearly, they are going to put the murders on Barbie. Then Barbie will lose the trust of those who now trust him. Then, by strike of fate, at the last moment it will be proven he didn't. Maybe involving the guilt ridden pastor (although this may be doubtful, because I don't think King likes to paint religious people in any type of positive light) That's my guess at least. Interested to see how the dome works out - meaning who is behind it. I'm also curious to whether or not anyone will stand up to Rennie outside of the 3 we know who will right now. Barbie pissed me off about marshall law. I feel like the army has a lot more say than he realizes. Eventually, the dome will come down and Rennie et al will be held accountable for all of their actions. IRL if someone knew that, they'd have less economic incentive to act like a dictator. Again, I'm sure the murders will be put on Barbie in some capacity causing shit to go down and let corruption rule, and it's already frustrating before it even happens. ^^^^^ Rambling
Just saw this question... Everyone knows how I'm reading this book. Spoiler Team audiobook ftw Spoiler
Spoiler: 90%, still confused Wondering how the "are the aliens really little kid aliens" part will play out. Are there going to be mom aliens who come home and find out what they were doing and take the dome off and scold them? Also we have good guys on the hill, bad guys going to the meth lab, and normal people at the dome wall. I'm hoping that the fire is at the meth lab (they have it rigged to blow) but then there is no confrontation between Barbie and Rennie so it's a bit anticlimactic. Still a ton of stuff to happen in less than 100 pages. I'm still going to be pissed if the worlds largest meth lab and the dome in the same town are coincidental.
Read some more this morning before bed. Spoiler What worries me is that, with about 20% done (the missiles shot by the Army just bounced off The Dome... (don't know why I'm capitalizing 'The Dome'), the book is shaping up nicely for an ending soon. But there are still 500+ pages. What the fuck is King going to do? All in all, I'm enjoying it. One thing about Stephen King's writing that always annoys me. It seems that, along the Good vs. Evil dichotomy, King feels humans are decidedly one or another. Yeah, it is literary to do so (you gotta have antagonist and protagonists), but you ALWAYS have the Big Jim Rennie guy that is just a complete and total evil cocksucker that goes against common sense and normalcy just to be mean. I mean, if this actually happened, I really don't think a megalomaniacal used car salesman would enrapture the entire town, disregard a letter from the President, invoke his own law, institute his son and a gang of ruffians as cops and attempt to frame an Army Colonel for murder because he was in a bar fight with his son. For the most part, humans may be selfish pricks, but they are generally decent.
Spoiler I couldn't agree more. The least believable character by far is Rennie. No one is pure evil and I can't see someone so blatantly bad getting away with all this in a small town where everyone knows everything. I also loathe dualism, either of the mind/body or the good/evil variety. King needs to read up on some ASOIAF so he understands how to make the bad guy realistic and appealing. I cringe whenever a Rennie scene comes along because I know it's going to be over-the-top bad guy shit.
One thing we normally do in these threads is cast the movie. Well, CBS is making a TV show so some parts are already cast. Spoiler First off, like so many other TV shows, CBS has already fucked this up. Reading about it, they have changed a lot. But some characters remain. Big Jim Rennie Dale Barbara I'm already rooting for the bad guy.

100% agree Audiobook spoiler Spoiler Jerk face narrator gives Jim Rennie, OF MAINE, a southern accent
Just done. Spoiler The concept was neat. I liked how the combined experiences of Julia and Barbie were part of the dream she was sharing with the kid. Some logical things bother me still, but I'll get over it. Too much death at the end, some of it gratuitous, but that's a Steven King book, ahs'pose. I'll wait for the rest of the class to finish before getting too deep into the discussion, though.
(Unspoilered it because it's not really a spoiler and we are half way through the month. Spoiler alert: There is a character named Jim Rennie.) It's hard for me NOT to hear Rennie speak in a southern accent. His religious-isms and other colloquialisms make it hard not to. When I'm reading his parts in a southern accent, I have to tell myself, "He's from Maine, idiot."
I think I'm gonna read that this summer. Hopefully we get another short book club book because The Stand is HUGE.
Reading Chuck Klosterman now but then moving on to The Stand or The Dark Tower series, much love for blackfish.
Spoiler: 70% So it sure as hell seems like it's going to be aliens. Like the idea that whatever this thing is has a barrier that kind of scares people off, but once you get inside of it, you're good to go. Like Cox more and more (HAHA COX) as the book goes on. Such a smart character, who also hates Rennie. Big fan. His press conference was fantastic. Obviously Rennie has one left play in him, but I like that he suddenly is in the hospital. Such a POS. And wtf at the Chef and him just going off the deep end. Stuff with the kids is great. I like Joe, cool kid. Happy that he's been one of the biggest reasons why they're figuring shit out.
Ok, so I really loathe "plot twists" when not extremely well done. I'd always prefer NOT to have them, but I don't mind them if they are good. To me, they are so cheap, and I will be so pissed if there is one in this book.
I don't think there was any kind of twist, just a logical progression of what they built up through the rest of the book. The ending was about what I expected but the story really drew me in. The last 20% or so was really good, could not put down, the ending wasn't as good but the book overall was very solid. Looking forward to reading more of King's stuff.
