    Gonna type some words.

Not sure what to say on this series. But I think ill start by asking where these panthers "fans" came from online? Like is this what the panthers fanbase is and I just have no idea? Are they Russian disinformation bots? Firing Bruno all season, taking Barkov's C away, etc. Who are these people?

I still can't pinpoint what went wrong. I can't just say meaningless stuff like "durrrr effort" but there were just hiccups in key spots. Fumbled pucks, fanned shots. There was one moment last night where Reinhart had the puck on the boards (I think shorthanded) and Barkov had a clear breakaway from center ice and Reinhart just....lost the puck. He also coasted on the 2 on 1 and allowed Kuch to recover. Then you have Ekblad fanning a shot on the PP late in the game from his prime shooting area in the face-off circle. He also fumbled the puck a couple of times on a PP where the puck left the zone. Just little things in key spots. Not sure at all what you blame that on.

...other than being in their own heads. Huberdeau especially. I definitely saw a higher level of effort from him but in key moments he just kept looking for the pass 99% of the time. One time last night down low to Gudas even. He needed to just create his own moments more and keep that pass honest. I really thought just getting past he Caps would have put them in a better headspace. I think if they play the Leafs it's totally different mentally.

I don't get the intensity criticism. That was the problem in Game 1 vs. Caps. They went full Mad Max and couldn't play that style AND their high scoring style. Maybe there's a balance but they attempted over 80 shots last night. That's what they needed to do.

So coaching. First theres a whole staff there that needed to come together and they deserve so much credit for the season. Its hard to blame them to just keep trying to play their game when you literally had a historic offense. You have to think they'll just click over a series at some point. But they tried all year to ride hot hands with line combos and tried to mix it up in the playoffs. The PP thing I'm not sure what else you do other than move 70 to PP1 earlier and have not-Barkov at the top. Too much pitch and catch with Huberdeau.

Only thing I'll be critical of is who to scratch. They never solved that bottom 6 and you just can't leave a 30-goal-scorer scratched when no one is scoring at all. What does that even solve? Get Accari or Lundell out of there. Find a place for Duclair even if its in the bottom 6. That's ridiculous to keep him out. Mamin should have been in every single game somehow.

Lastly I dont want to hear about coaching and experience and effort when you have Thornton and Giroux there. You shouldn't be blaming coaches if there is another level of effort you need to get to when you have multiple veteran cup chasers on the roster.

I despise our fanbase. On one end, you have the endless sunshine pumpers where they don't care if the Panthers win or lose, they just want to fawn over Ryan Lomberg. On the other end you have people who don't know jack shit about hockey and their nuance extends to We lost so that means the goalie sucks and needs to go and the forwards need to go for not scoring enough. Then you have the people who think the solution to everything is to have Paul Laus as the #1 D-man and Peter Worrell on the first line. I hate them the most.

    In short, EVERYTHING except goaltending.

The effort was lacking in multiple spots. The constant slow starts to games, the lack of any type of puck possession late in games they were losing and needed a goal.

Their puck luck was HORRIBLE all series. So many bad bounces. The GWG last night being chief among them. There was another one where the puck was coming to Huby who would have had a wide open net, but the puck bounced over his stick and harmlessly into the corner.

BUT that's still not the reason they lost. They only have themselves to blame.
AND HERE we get to the crux of the issue. This team was up its own ass the entire playoffs. All it took was their opponents switching to a 1-3-1 neutral zone trap and they completely forgot how to hockey. Then the PP woes just made it worse. This is not an attempt to take ANYTHING away from Tampa, because they earned that sweep (especially without Point), but the Panthers played WAY below what they were capable of. They played "Panther Hockey" for short stints the entire playoffs which is unacceptable. All of the teams best players shrank from the moment. There are only two players on the roster who can say they left it all on the ice and that's Verhaeghe and Bobrovsky.

Everyone else needs to be in with a sports psychologist asap.

Barkov and, Huberdeau, and Reinhart were shells of their former selves. None of the three said they were hurt. So the only answer is that they shrank from the moment. That is a MASSIVE problem.

Weegar went from a reliable top pairing defenseman to a scrub at the worst possible moment the entire playoffs.

Ekblad looked like a guy coming off an ankle injury.

I am going to disagree here. We have seen this team flip the switch and dominate opponents for long stretches all year. We didn't see that in this lightning series until game 4. By then it was way too late.

Bruno deserves all the criticism for waiting so long to change things on the PP. He also deserves criticism for last night. What the fuck were you doing leaving bob in the net so long.
The problem was that it wasn't the bottom 6 letting the team down. It was the top 6. No amount of mixing and matching the bottom guys was going to change that Barkov, Huby, Weegar, Reinhart, Bennett, and to a slightly lesser extent giroux shit all over themselves for all 10 games.

This is such a HORSE shit excuse. They have plenty of playoff experience now. They just choked a big one. They played soo poorly and allowed a weakened tampa team to DOMINATE them.

I'll have more words later. But to say this playoff run was an epic failure is an understatement imo.

Well this isn't just a throwaway point. It could just be the style the panthers play will always struggle in a playoff series when teams can plan for you and close down certain things. Panthers excel on the rush and using their skill to then open up multiple lanes and options. When Caps and Lightning committed to 1-3-1, the options were gone.

You can't just say offensively to change entire styles when thats how the team is built. You don't ask the Greatest Show on Turf Rams to switch to the triple option in the playoffs. You play to open things up. But...

...we also saw it in the 2nd period of game 1 and a whole lot of game 2. And what? I knew after the first period last night it was over. Then I watch highlights from the Avs who aren't doing nearly that much more than the panthers but normal shots and playing a normal hockey game and pucks just go in.

True but again the depth of the team was a competitive advantage. You need that constant pressure to open options up for the top 6 as well. Thats what we saw all season.

    I don't buy this argument.
And this is why. Because they were able to beat the trap on occasion. They just didn't do it nearly consistenty enough.

The Panthers had REALLY bad puck luck. No argument from me. But IMO it's a cop out to say this was a fluky loss when we all know this team is capable of so much more than what they showed.

you aren't necessarily wrong, but IMO the bottom 6 was the paper cut that didn't get addressed while the patient was gushing blood from a gunshot to the head. This team was let down in a major way by their stars. Maybe some better roster decisions with the bottom 6 gets the Panthers to game 5, but they didn't deserve to win a single game in this series other than game 4.

I'm conflicting myself because its all confusing.

The point im getting at is if the panthers play their game in the exact same way with the same intensity and the same coaching vs. almost any other team in the East, then they are on cruise control. So maybe its just their style is just horrible vs. the lightning and only the lightning and by lightning I mean their goalie and just their goalie. It was bad at times against the Caps too but eventually they wore them down and faced typical goaltending so you know....pucks eventually went in.

So the overreacting to their effort I dont see as the issue people are making it out to me. I think it's there and frustration led to lapses. Plus Vasy is in their heads so they are passing up shots they otherwise take or in some cases passing up going 1v1 vs. a defender since we felt we needed to have passing to generate goals. No one was willing to charge in other than Mamin, Carter, and Bennett. Not that Bennett was any good at it but he tried.

If they played all 10 games with the same intensity that they played last night (and get a modicum of puck luck), the caps get swept and the Panthers are up 3-1 on the Lightning right now and we are all calmly waiting to close the Lighting on tomorrow. But they didn't. They had that intensity for small parts of the other 9 games. Nowhere near consistent enough for the playoffs.
Vasi was god tier in this series, but they still didn't pressure him enough with high danger chances.

See this is where we disagree. I think their intensity wasn't there enough, which led to early deficits, then frustration, and then more lapses.

You are 100% right here, but I think the difference between the two of us is that you seem to be ready to chalk this up as a bad matchup + Vasi going god mode, while I'm saying even with both of those things being true, the Panthers had the talent to beat them anyway. Instead they got swept. To me, that is unacceptable no matter what happened on the other side of the ice. Only next season will tell us if this was the Panthers WTF series loss similar to CBJ knocking off Tampa, or if this team really is fatally flawed.

I'm not ready to chalk it up but I hate explanations that are just "effort" and "intensity". Barkov showed some panic last night and promptly put his stick into Hedman's face.

I think what I'm saying about just not forcing more pucks to the net or being aggressive going at defenders (and opting to find the next pass) is what is being interpreted more as "lack of intensity." But thats a style choice and not an "intensity" issue. Huberdeau was particularly intense in his body language and whatever else but his play decisions were more pass-first and not trying to take a game into his hands.

It reminds me of when beer league guys are playing a division they are too good for so they dangle all over the place then pass and its usually not a goal or even a good shot on net. or when soccer teams do everything great but when it comes to the "final third" to actually shoot some guy just whiffs on the shot no matter how good the build up was. But the guy doing the build up was still impressive.

The one thing that annoyed me to no end on the PP was the Barkov/Huberdeau saucer pass competition to each other back and forth.

IMO Barkov showed panic the entire post season. He was rarely the best player on the ice despite being the most talented player in both series. To me, that's a player shrinking in the moment.

I understand your point, but I think the Panthers rarely controlled play regardless of their style. They didn't have possession of the puck nearly as much as they did throughout the regular season.

I think they had SOME good build ups that they couldn't turn into shots, but nowhere near enough for me to give them a pass.
Yup. Two players who were so in their own head they completely stopped play whenever the puck was on their stick.

    Hey guys,

I'm sad. I just kept thinking all playoffs: "No way Q would have the squad looking like this, right?!"

Hope a coaching change helps and we put Huby & Barky in a viking war camp to grow them some balls.

I know for a fact Q was giving Bruno advice all year and through the playoffs.

We will never know if Q was telling Bruno to make more changes and he held off.

As for Huby and Barky, couldn't agree more.

I don’t see how Q makes a big difference other than in the media (more from an experience standpoint in the alternate reality where he’s not a disgrace)

I’m sure they’d love to, but they need to clear about 10 mill in cap space before it’s possible

Yea. This increasingly feels like a lightning v. Bluejackets collapse. It’s infuriating. This team should be playing for it all this week

Wasting that Bob performance over very beatable teams. I’m including the caps in a sense that we almost threw that one away too.

I still can’t believe we didn’t punk the lightning for at least one game. We’re the only team they played this year in the playoffs that didn’t at least annihilate them for a game.
