Let me ask you this. I know probably more black folk who are anti vaccine due to distrust of the government. I feel like they have fair reason for that even though I wish they would get vaccinated. How do we square that?
I’d be more likely to agree with you Trusty if these people weren’t actively harming others. At this point, it isn’t ignorance either. It’s chosen indifference and stupidity. The information is readily available, and people are choosing to ignore it in favor of their own preferred realities. It would be one thing if there wasn’t a fix to this and people got exposed in the course of normal life. God knows I wasn’t perfect wrt going out to eat or whatever. And who knows what someone’s work circumstances are. But the vaccine has been available to anyone who wants it for 5 months now. So zero sympathy for those who think they know more than scientists who have devoted their entire life to developing medicine to improve humanity’s quality of life. This is a concern but polling has shown that there is a much larger percentage of white people who are right-wing idiots that are refusing to get vaccinated and spreading misinformation. If the only people who were skeptical in large numbers were Black Americans then we would have a much much higher vaccination rate.
I firmly believe that most of our racism is a result of all of that shit I mentioned. Not all, but I feel it would be significantly less if we addressed those factors. That being said, fuck a racist
If you're CONFIDENT in your anti-vax position to where you will spread that ideology you've gone through the ringer, you aren't confused, you aren't just some good news articles or friends talking to you from turning it around. You KNOW there is a counter to what you're doing and reject it. These aren't vaccine hesitant folks, they're anti-vax and spreading an ideology of death and disease.
I’ll never feel bad for someone who spreads racist or bigoted shit. You can say that they’re brainwashed but I grew up in a town of 2,000 people that’s 95% conservative. It’s a choice at the end of the day.
