Alex is good at researching odd topics in cfb (The Dead Letters series is very well done imo). However, he's really bad at just shooting the shit when it comes to talking CFB day to day. He's always diving into a culture topic the wrong way. RJ's coverage of the NFL/scheme is a good listen at times as well. I'm pretty biased regarding Godfrey because we have so many mutual connections and I genuinely like his cynicism about cfb and his alumni. I think at times he drives the other two to look at CFB from a very different direction. SZD would be a lot like The Solid Verbal and Cover 3 podcast without Godrey. Fwiw he's not as smug irl...
I listened to the Solid Verbal for several years and quit in or around the COVID season. It’s a great college football podcast for people that don’t actually like college football.
Im convinced Dan Rubenstein doesnt actually like sports. Just didnt want a real job and found an untapped market. His persona is like the consummate summer camp counselor. I do like Ty. Its just too surface-level.
Solid Verbal and Fullcast were my introductions to the cfb podcast ecosystem. I have vague memories of them being on SoundCloud. Nowadays, I don't find their commentary all that interesting. Even the companion shows feel sleepy and lack any enthusiasm.
When Holly said did you know they put the cowboys on TV because people watch I wanted video reaction of everyone else so bad. It was so dumb and she was talking like it was breaking news.
From what I've gathered, they're writing partners and she was in a dark place after her divorce so they got her back on the pod to try to pull her out of it/keep her alive. Could be wrong, but it seems like their relationship could just be a product of him being the main person to help her in that situation, though obviously it can read as a romantic relationship at times. Maybe they're together, idk, but it seems like Spencer has a wife and I've always just given it the benefit of the doubt given how she came back.
I hope Godfrey's deal is purely because it's the offseason, and he's super busy. Otherwise, SZD becomes pretty forgettable without him. I've also heard that they will try to have a revolving door of guests during some of his absence.
Kind of hope they continue to do more of that going forward with or without Godfrey around. Generally, I think they have some pretty interesting guests compared to other national pods that just bring on a different talking head to rehash the same tired narratives.
I got the opposite. He def clarified he was just bored with maintaining the project. But the pod last month made it seem like the single wing was going on outside of SZD. Now made it seem like Single Wing + 1/2 monthly SZD shows still happening for him. I mean, I doubt he comes to the live show this weekend. But sounds like he will still be on podcasts monthly.
I thought he said on the newest Single Wing that it's going wherever he is or something to that effect.
Shocked there are other szd sickos like me if it’s just Richard (who I love) and Alex mostly I doubt I’ll subscribe.
Godfrey is at live taping tonight Lot of cfb media here. Saw Golic Jr, Nicole Auerbach among others. And Joel Anderson.
Saw Golic Jr when I was walking back in from dropping off my homefield shirt at the car. He commented on my ND shirt (my family is littered with ND grads) and spoke with him for a second. If I had seen Joel after the show I would’ve mentioned “Joel from Missouri City” since I enjoy him on Bomani’s pod. Also ran into Jessica Smetana from the LeBatard show and Harry Lyles from ESPN when I was walking into the venue. Smetty and my brother Count de Monet are both Clemson to ND transfers as undergrads so we had to mention that to them as well. I’m also a big LeBatard show fan but didn’t want to fanboy out too much and bother them so we kept our conversation very brief.
When I saw him I told my wife "This is the fastest 10 yr old in America" I was wondering who that was with Lyles. Very cool.
Made a joke to Jess Smetana about how much older I was despite our Clemson/ND connection and she wouldn’t accept it. Had to get the hell out of there after that exchange. Overall though, it was a great experience and always nice to be around college football fans who are a bit irreverent.
I just recently started the who killed college football series from a recommendation here. It’s an incredibly well done series.
Every time Godfrey would say he worked at Secret Base it surprised me, kept expecting him to get the axe there.
Spencer's column on the Cobb Braves is fantastic. Should have known Trumpism was possible with how many ppl shrugged their shoulders at all the implications of them leaving Atlanta. https://how-id-fix-atlanta.ghost.io/how-spencer-hall-would-fix-atlanta/

Listened to the first episode of Godfrey and Nanni’s new podcast. First episode is about PGA v LIV. Maybe the least surprising thing ever is that Godfrey has a standing invite to play Augusta but doesn’t play golf.
