If, and it's a big IF, he actually finishes WoW how many of y'all would actually read it knowing that he has no chance of ever finishing the series?
I wanted to post something snarky but I'll be pre-ordering the shit out of it(in this alternate reality where he ever finishes another book)
No doubt I'll read it. I'll also enjoy a million Alt Shift X and In Deep Geek videos on it, along with an endless supply of speculation for how it will (would have) end(ed).
Couldn't find the "Winds of Winter is never getting released" thread (unless this is it with a name change) Cliffs: Fat bastard has been writing this book for a literal decade and still has hundreds more pages to go.
Never met an author who covers up his failures by blaming the fans that made him more than a mediocre writer for tv.
I’ve read one new book in 15 years. I honestly don’t care anymore. Would not affect me if he never finished.
This book about to be 5,000 pages with how much he’s written. Spoiler But it’s never getting written so who cares
Pretty sure he had like a 99% completed draft like five years ago and decided it wasn't good enough so he scrapped the whole thing and started over. Because he's young and healthy and can afford to take chances like that.
Same here. The last two books haven't been that good, the last three seasons of the show were worse, and he certainly doesn't give a single fuck about the fandom. He can just edit wildcard books off into the sunset. #TeamSanderson
My guess is that he started over from almost scratch again this year after seeing how poorly his story lines played out on HBO. Also this post from a decade ago is something I find more entertaining than most things he's created since he said this.
I think he probably started with a doable outline and arcs. Then, as he wrote he began branching out and making it more complex. Now he’s at the point you bring up. He’s afraid. He doesn’t know how to simplify the end game without leaving a ton of unresolved plot lines. Basically, every fan would be dissatisfied, “But what about this and that? I need to know how they end up.” I doubt he truly intends to finish it up. He’ll get involved with prequel stories that are time limited and have clearer boundaries.
No doubt he had a solid three act story: Focus on the war for the throne in act one...planting seeds for Dany and the Others along the way Focus on Dany's ascension and revenge in act two...planting seeds for the Others along the way Focus on the Others in act three...tying up all the storylines and bringing it to a conclusion Somewhere along the way he lost the plot, literally at points in ADWD, and has let the story grow too large to rein it back in. Considering how A Game of Thrones was supposed to be book one and it became books one, two, and three, and A Dance with Dragons was supposed to be book two, and it became books four and five, and the fifth book was big enough to be two books, and still didn't even finish all the plot threads it started...I have my doubts he'll be able to wrap up act two and do all of act three in the final two books. Even if GRRM was 200lbs lighter and 20 years younger, I don't think he can pull it off. Dany hasn't even landed on fucking Westeros yet.
Never forget. The book that was split into afwd and affc was mostly finished. Then barnes and fucking noble told him it was to big for the price point. Would take to much shelf space. So they split it. After the split he decided to rewrite adwd. That's when he lost the plot.
Good for George. The fat bastard got through 2020 and the "year of quarantine, isolation, no distractions, and no excuses." Now he can happily put the book off thanks to a myriad of excuses and distractions.
My suspicion is that those are mostly going to flop. ASoIaF was a uniquely amazing story that, at least initially, was the best ever presentation of that genre on TV. It was a bit of lightning in a bottle and the contingent known as "the show fags" were caught up in it. I can't see the Casuals, who still didn't know all the primary character names in the finale, watching the prequels. Especially with all the other content that's going to be out there (WoT). We also know how well the show went after they ran out of grrms meticulously detailed novels to lean on. The prequels won't have the novels either just George's notes/advice. Probably just bitter but fully expect all of these to flop assuming he lives long enough to see them through.
The way GOT ended sucked all the excitement out of any new shows, imo. They'll be successful, but only marginally.
If the production quality is anywhere near GOT, they should all be successful (although the animated show is a wildcard). The problem for each will likely be getting a satisfying and coherent ending, which I'd be highly skeptical of.
That production quality hadn't been seen before at that point. Now other shows/networks/services have leveled up too. I don't think high fantasy is really a market that the vast majority of Casuals really enjoy. Wish them luck I guess. After all, if you had told me 20 years ago that comic book movies would completely dominate Hollywood I wouldn't have seen it either. Maybe GoT was actually the Mother of Dragon Movies.
I never thought they would catch up with me but they did. They caught up with me and passed me and, you know, that made it a little strange—because now, the show was ahead of me and the show was going in somewhat different directions.” What the fuck? It’s not like he finished book 6 and when he was halfway done with 7 they caught and passed him. They caught you because you never fucking wrote another book you piece of shit. Actually you did, they were just for other series
Whenever people say "he's the American Tolkien" I gag. Tolkien created entire languages, cultures, mythologies and a world of which LOTR was as big a slice as the hundred years war is to the past 1k years of our history. When people talk about world building they mean "he made a map." Tolkien made a "world." Martin can't even finish a series.
Mistborn and Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive series) are probably the two most common entry points. I would recommend Mistborn first, it’s quicker. Stormlight Archive is his magnum opus. Mistborn had a completed trilogy, then 3/4 books published in a series that is related but takes place years later. Both are great.
