So hearing the recaps, the backlog of commercials and AON risk reward promo was due to Jay going in the booth and pissing down his leg and saying nothing. His public facing tenure in a nutshell.
I haven’t really kept up with it so sorry if it’s a dumb question but why is Phil getting more heat than guys like DJ and the others?
Take away the Saudi aspect, Phil kinda led the charge to dismantle the tour and make this whole thing happen. He literally hired an attorney to draft a rival leagues bylaws. plus he’s a selfish prick deep in debt searching for a quick cash grab at the expense of his peers
Phil was the first. He's the biggest name by far. He was the most outspoken about all of it. He said some really dumb things.
Also Phil was coming off winning the PGA. He was on top of the golf world and everyone loved him/his story
I’ve seen 15 seconds of a Bryson interview and he said it was a business decision. I hate him but at least he was closer to being honest than most
yea I dont think DJ is dumb; he pretends to be dumb as an auto-deflect from answering the questions that make him uncomfortable. And he has been doing that schtick forever.
Overlapping with the guy in your fan of section for 15ish years of top tier golf certainly masked a lot of how good he really was.
I think DJ is probably pretty dumb in general, but it’s impossible to ignore that his family has business ties to every part of this. Trump golf, Gretzky family recruiting members, Maralago membership, etc. He was a driving force with Phil. For him to claim dumb golfer would ignore so much more that we know.
I mean the guy who got so lit the week of the Masters that he fell down the stairs at his rental and had to WD due to back injury. I might take his word when he says he’s dumb.
That was a slight joke. But do I think DJ fully understands or cares to understand the Saudis? No. Could he easily be used as a pawn? Yes. I think most of his motivation is 37 years old, pile of money play 15-20x a year.
DJ is actually not very smart and has consistently made poor life choices. Very nice and likeable guy from most accounts. He and Pauline like money, so it 100% makes sense for him to make decision. I’d assume Koepka would follow. Koepka has always been open that he doesn’t really love golf, but he’s good at it and can make a bunch money.
Understand the Saudis? Probably not. But he was and is one of the major players on this even if it was his agent and family mostly. DJ can be dumb in general and still understand the game. His brother has had Trump golf on his shirt for two years. He’s a member (with his family) of Maralago. Two of the golf courses are Trump golf courses. His very famous father in law is recruiting members actively. DJ is as implicit as Phil or anyone.
DJ off the record has made clear that he doesn't give a fuck and wants to get paid. To the public he definitely plays up the dim witted idiot as his excuse. I think he wants to make and spend a lot of money with Paulina. He might as well just say, they are going to give this money to someone, might as well be me
I'm not sure that Dj is dumb but he certainly seems pretty self absorbed. I think it's pretty clear that golf is a means to go hang out in the islands with his family.
Fried Egg content is even better now that they let Morrison do the narration instead of Andy on some of this stuff.
Really enjoy listening to Gil Hans talk about his work. He seems brilliant. He and Tom Doak are doing so many cool projects right now. This years major slate of courses is as good as it gets.
Hanse probably is more universally loved where Doak is much more polarizing. Similar to Pete Dye I think when we look back at Doak it will be with universal admiration but now there are people that will hate on him or at least particular projects. You just flat out never get anything but glowing praise when it comes to Hanse
Not as a whole, but of the new age architects he's definitely the one most likely to have people bitch about his work.
I’m assuming this is a particular podcast’s take you’re borrowing? I haven’t been able to find anything casting his work in a negative light. Personally I’ve really enjoyed the few courses of his I’ve been fortunate enough to play.
What the fuck are you talking about? I don't even think I am saying anything that profound here, or that even he himself would disagree with.
Hanse has very few original designs, so critiquing his own work is a lot tougher to do. He’s a master of restorations and has been hand-picked by the USGA (ala Rees Jones before him) to restore all the great American courses who can potentially host numerous Opens in the future. He’s the new Open doctor who uses less personal license and more historical perspective to do his work. There’s again not much to critique there because he doesn’t use a lot of creative license himself. Doak is a wildly abrasive architect who regularly does things his own way in his own designs. He also has zero problem whatsoever calling others out. Hanse gets adoration for saying the right things and not doing anything original. Doak will have a larger effect on the game long term, albeit with way more detractors.
exactly. doak has been openly critical of other architects and can rub people the wrong way. he created his own golf course eating system that people say is often contradictory. The golf course architecture crowd can be s snobby bunch.
I never count out Smith anymore. Fitz is in great form and I'll probably bet him top 10 and play him in dk but my man can't close the deal.
