How cold is it that late in the fall? I was in Cannon Beach for New Years one year and it was freezing. Can't imagine golfing in that. I was thinking April/May but not sure how the weather is that time of year. Was just thinking about daylight. Definitely.
Cannon beach is northern Oregon coast, Bandon is practically Northern California, so temperatures are milder. I typically play in shorts and a pull over that time of year. I'd say average temp is mid 50's, so cold coming from AZ, but not freezing cold. This will be year #7 or 8 for me and it's only rained horribly once and limited wind. Played another time of year and it was 60+ wind every day so it happens.
I think the deal starts that weekend and extends through February. Then they have a slightly higher price in March-May. I'd call soon since there are limited tee times due to daylight. We typically book right after we go since rooms and tee times can be tough to come by.
Korn Ferry/Web.com (whatever) Tour championship is this weekend. Just looked at the field. Some pretty notable names in the field trying to keep their PGA Tour card for next year. Hunter Mahan Freddie Jacobson Ben Crane Harris English Steve Marino Daniel Berger Stewart Cink Ollie Schneiderjans ....and Smylie WD'd so I'm guessing that's, that? If that's it for him, what a career.
Played Harbour Town yesterday morning. Pretty awesome experience overall, $270 green fee was steep but I’d consider paying close to that again. I screwed up by not reading the terms closely and realizing I needed to request a walking caddie a day before so I had a cart and a forecaddie. Got paired up with another guy in a cart plus two guys with walking caddies and it was an awesome group to play with, all 3 caddies really made the experience worth it. My girlfriend was riding along with me and they were all very welcoming to her, even trying to get her to take some swings at times. Since I was getting paired with people they moved my tee time up 10 minutes so I didn’t have as much time to warm up as I’d liked and I definitely needed at least 10 minutes putting; the greens were rolling faster than anything I’ve seen in a long time. I had a few reads where the caddie corrected my line slightly but overall they weren’t the trickiest to read. Hit it we’ll tee to green but easily gave up 5 shots chipping and putting to card an 86. Low score of the group so I’ll take the win. Also, the clubhouse is amazing, especially the men’s locker room. If I have one regret it’s that the gf was waiting on me downstairs to eat lunch because I would love to have had some drinks up there while watching the first tee and ninth green
Omega Masters on Golf Channel just got crazy in a hurry. Rory was 5-6 back like 90min ago and how is tied for the lead.
Pretty insane finish there. How Soderberg isn’t at -15 or better is like a 1 in 1000 chance of happening.
Looking at a trip to Palm Springs part of Thanksgiving week this year and would play once or twice. It looks like a lot of the courses do the overseeding in October and then some of them are cart path only in November after this. How long does overseeding affect the playability of a course? If they re-open the course 11/1 after all the maintenance, would 3-4 weeks be enough time for it to be in good shape?
Awesome, thanks. Is there much to do around town during the day for the girls? Trying to go with another couple and the hang up right now would be getting the girls on board because they're not that familiar with the area
Sounds interesting, and I need another book for after I finish Course Called Scotland. May as well give this a shot
It’s non-fiction and covers a lot of US golf history from the earlier days. It documents a private match at Cypress between the two top pros and top amateurs (Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Ken Venturi, and Harvie Ward) during the practice round for the Bing Crosby Clambake (first pro-am, now the AT&T). It goes back and forth between covering biographies of the players in the match and covering the events of the match itself. Truly a hard book to put down.
And how tough the life of a pro was back then. It wasn’t anything remotely close to the glamorous life of the pros of today. The pros back in the 30s-50s didn’t bring home more than a couple grand from a win. Most broke even if they were lucky or eventually tapped out.
And all of them were always looking for a fat mark to get in a game. Those guys had to play money games every chance they could to supplement their income. I remember a line Trevino said when asked if he felt pressure going into the final round of a tournament. "You don't know what pressure is until you've played for $5 a hole with only $2 in your pocket."
Fucking Kuchar. I don’t think the intent of the new rule was to allow someone to remove two inches in all directions of the ball
Shotgun Start had a field day with this. It took a while but players have started to call others out for slow play, only a matter of time before Rory or Brooks speak up on this
Anyone ever played/stayed at the Greenbrier? Seems like it would be a cool place to go with the golf/casino/falconry/etc
Live in Virginia, grew up going there every year and still get back a good bit for work. Cool place, pricey, but you know what you’re getting into. Course is maybe a B at A+ price, but it’s still a PGA event course. Food is awesome, rooms are nice, it’s a worthwhile spot for sure.
Kevin Chappell just tied the record for most consecutive birdies at 9, and he's thru 10. Holy fucking shit.
This week was a massive tournament hosted in my city for the United Way. It runs Tuesday to Friday, two sessions per day with 27 teams minimum per session. It's a massive fundraiser that has been running several years now and gets some crazy sponsorship. They also get a ton of merchandise from the big brands and they're sold at a special mobile shop price, then to get rid of stuff last night they were doing 20% off on top of that. I picked up a short sleeve FootJoy rain jacket for $80, retails at $155. The 20% didn't apply to clubs and bags but they had Epic Flash and TS woods for over $100 off retail. Planning on going back up there today to see if there's anything I missed
The wind is howling at Gleneagles but this pace of play is abysmal. The final match teed off at 7:25ct, coming up on 2 hours in, and are only through 5
