All these fools who don’t like Bryson just don’t understand his physics or are jealous of his chiseled physique. Please disregard.
Best thing Golf Channel has ever done (although it may have actually been done by the Tour). Regardless, have mercy
This is one of the defining characteristics that explains consistency difference between Phil and Tiger. When Tiger can’t keep his driver on the map, he finds a safe shot that keeps him in the fairway. When Phil can’t, he swings harder. Story of their careers.
Big Cat with a relatively stress-free 69. Not even remotely the same player he was three years ago and lovely to see.
One thing I was surprised is how much purse money is concentrated to the high finishers - e.g. top 10 or so is a shit ton of money, top 11-20 seems pretty good, 21-40 is alright, and then 41-70 don't make much and cuts make nothing. It seems like if you aren't consistently making a few top 10s a season you aren't covering the costs to maintain coaches, agents, travel, etc. I'm sure this is obvious to you guys but something random I noticed. Just thought it would be a little more smoothed out - one putt to finish either T4 or T8 could be like $50k.
The financial disparity is something that gets talked about a lot but more in the sense of how good these guys on the PGA Tour have it compared to the KFT (tour just a level below the big one) and especially LPGA. The payout is definitely more top heavy but when you go look at the money list for the year it’s pretty eye opening. For example, last year you had to go all the way to number 219 to see guys below 6 figures. Also a lot of their expenses are covered which is not the case on other tours
The tour definitely rewards winning moreso than guys that just finish top 15 every week. All you need is one big week and it doesn't matter if you miss cuts all over the place. The guy racking up top 15s is usually the much better player, but the winner is rewarded better with both money and tour status.
Not golf related but I read last week Halsey's dad is black which makes her half black too which is even more crazy than Cam Champ when you look at her.
Right. You've got a guy like Tony finau who is a top ten machine but he's going to be behind the guy with 20 missed cuts and a win and 2-3 top 5's.
I agree that winning is important, but if you are picking players for the Ryder Cup do you want someone that wins vs 95% of the field week in and week out or someone that turned it on two or three weeks and lost to most of the field the rest of the time?
You brought it to "remembers" I'm sure most of the world will all remember Lanto Griffin, Sung Kang, and JT Poston for their triumphs last year
There's something to be said for being to close out a tournament. I tend to agree with the idea that if you win one, you should get the big paycheck and the exemption.
Yep - I don't want to say who but my gf's family is super close with someone on the tour which is why I've become more and more interested in the sport (from the stories I've heard, golfers seem loony). His career sounds like what you're describing (e.g. he makes a ton of cuts, but typically finishes outside the top 10).
The Ryder Cup points system does reward the former more so than the latter. Lanto is currently 31 and Poston 34
not necessarily, a lot of the young guys will work a deal with a rich backer who will front the money for a percentage of the earnings. from what I’m told it costs 200-300k to play a full schedule on tour
They are shitting bricks in Ponte Vedra Supposedly the PAC meetings recently have been heated with a class system developing. You have top players wanting to do away with opposite field events or just diminish their $/status.
This would basically replace the PGA and European tours on the top end. Lots of suits would be out of jobs and put more power in player/agent hands.
For the golf viewer and the players that are involved, this would be great. For Jay Monahan, this is his worst nightmare.
