Would fail. There’s something about the psyche of sports fans tied to the league and the teams. No one is emotionally tied to a new league and having a championship. If liv couldn’t even overcome that when it’s tied to individual players in an individual sport then the mountain is that much higher for teams and pulling emotion out of winning the NBA title.
there's a whole great big world out there. it might not be as much about taking over American sports as it is taking the best players out of them. American fans could decide if they want to follow or not, but the NBA is big enough worldwide that it could possibly succeed either way if it got the best players. not saying anything for sure but as we've seen today, crazy money can shift the landscape drastically without anyone seeing it coming.
this makes me think this leverage allow for them to redo a lot of the LIV stuff in a PGL image/rebrand/remodel and just indemnify all the golfers on both sides of the aisle for a clean start.
they could still be separate like the DP Tour and PGA Tour are. So you’re a member of one tour with certain access to the others.
Can’t even imagine what the Saudi investment number was. The Tour ran their best players ragged with these elevated events, LIV ratings were in the garbage, no big signings going over to LIV in over a year, seemed to find a way to mutually coexist in majors …. And then they just bail them out? If the Tour was struggling with money, why wouldn’t they do the HoldCo above the 501(c)6 but then go with private equity money and let LIV flounder? Just baffling unless the number is astronomical
Still thinking about how the tour completely fucked over their rank and file. Ask your players to hold the line and not take the cash grab, they do that for you for 2 years. Then a year later, take the money from them for yourself. Capitalism, baby!
are we doubting whether Monahan stands to immensely profit off this? not to mention what he believes to be new found job security to continue his lifestyle
I would imagine Monahan is gone within 12 months. The players are going to get a ton of money plus the investment to keep the purses as high as they are currently.
Replied congratulating the other Saudi lovers a couple pages ago. Not really geeked about all the non-profits around the country that this will effect in a big way with this tour going to a for profit business model. Really think Jay Monahan is the biggest pos even more if that was possible. Pretty bummed about the accepted billion dollars investment from a group of people who have a terrible human rights record and don't believe women should be treated as equals.
maybe, details are skinny at this point but the CNBC appearance (which is basically the most substantive info we have from the horses mouth) sure made it seem like Jay will have a prominent [and maybe even new] role in the new entity.
Don’t forget the whole “Announce this during pride month while homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia”
Ya….but the Saudi’s could buy all of them out, and I’m sure most of them would happily take a meeting if someone is considering offering a 3x+ multiplier on their team’s current FMV.
It sucked under LIV, but most everything sucked under LIV. I think they could do it right if they have the correct people running it (which they probably don’t).
I think as constructed where they just aggregate everybody's stroke play score, no. I'm not opposed to a team format that could be fun.
In general? Yes. I liked participating on one in high school. I like watching it in college golf. I still love playing team golf today when able. It adds another dimension to the overall competition that is fun to track on top of the individual comp. The way LIV did it? Absolutely fucking not
I fear change and I am standoffish so I do not like the team format and this whole thing sucks. Fuck Monahan
team format was cool for the ncaa championships but maybe that was only bc the gators won. prob would have sucked if they weren’t in the hunt
team concept in some events would be a lot of fun. i would hate for it to be a year long thing but a few team events a year would be cool.
If they do it like F1, the team aspect would only be additive. If you only care about individual results and believe racing should be an individual sport, you can enjoy it that way. But if you also want to follow team storylines, that’s available too. That was a large part of PGL’s pitch. The team aspect shouldn’t take away from the traditional individual aspect.
No, but if they can check the box for "incorporating team golf concepts" that was mentioned in the press release by having a one-off PGA/LIV team event next season, I'd be into that. It would be fun to watch something like Brooks/DJ/Cam/Bryson/Niemann/Phil play against Scheffler/Rahm/Morikawa/JT/Spieth/Rory.
Team Titleist, PING, Srixon, Taylormade, etc…in the F1 style format previously mentioned in this thread.
This was a large piece of the pitch to Hideki (that he turned down). Basically an Asian-centric team sponsored and named after a major Asian golf brand, ala F1 team sponsorships. Again, if they do it right it could work well. But are these folks the ones who will do it well? Hopefully they can pluck some of the thinkers behind PGL.
it needs to not be straight stroke play alongside an individual tournament, in my opinion. More match play
