If they can actually achieve this, that’s a pretty big “best of both worlds” scenario

but it also feels more like a “freeze” than a rollback.

3 yards of carry for an amateur driver is basically no change. And 10 yards for a pro can probably be recovered in swing adjustments if they wanted to.

They also said 30% of the balls today are conforming to the new standard.

This is also interesting. They’re basically trying to combat the high swing speed, high launch, low spin rate phenomenon that has made everyone considerably longer through club fitting the last few years.

So 15yds for the best of the best is going to save a bunch of legacy golf courses from extinction (aka not hosting pro tournaments)?

Unlikely. This feels like just part of a long term solution.

They also mentioned further research into forgiveness of the driver, which seems to be the logical next step.

Pro V1x is definitely not conforming, based on distance data

    Wonder if the ProV1 is

Oh I know. But there are current premium balls that fly considerably less far than others. I wonder which of those is part of the 30%.

There is more to this than just playing at old elite courses. It's also about a specific skill having an outsized impact on the game. A skill thats reward is no longer met with meaningful risk.

Assuming the rollback really only affects driver, and doesn’t have any affect below 5 iron, I think it’s safe to conclude the higher swing speed players will be getting adversely affected more than shorter hitters on Tour. That will most certainly cause people to complain.

From there, the desire to decrease forgiveness in the driver basically becomes a necessity to bring back the advantage quality drivers of the golf ball had previously.

We are at a point if nothing is done guys will be hitting it 400 yards in the next 5 years. The ball spins so little that guys are incentivized to swing as fast a possible. Couple that with course setups with thick rough and narrow fairways their best option is to hit it as far as possible. The faster you swing, the more you get out of the Pro V1 and lower spinning equipment. I can't really envision this hurting the amateur really at all, and it certainly won't make it where pros can go back to 6500 yard courses. It is just trying to slow down the extreme rate of distance gains.

This is basically going back to 2010 distance with the driver. I don't think Furyk, Luke Donald, and the like have the success the did then today but distance will always be an advantage.

If you listened to the players, their ideas for controlling distance actually exaggerated distance advantage. Narrow fairways and thick rough. In that setting the field of possible winners shrinks. At Augusta and Open short hitters have a chance and it just also happens to be more interesting golf.

Approach shots are the most exciting part of the game and that is a skill that should be emphasized at the competition/professional level.

I saw this comment a couple times yesterday and I agree with it. Rahm going to LIV doesn’t really want to make me watch LIV any more than I do today. But the PGA without Rahm is definitely weaker. So yay, nobody wins except for Rahm’s great grandchildren.

And that’s not a shot at Rahm. If someone is going to guarantee you 600million, how do you run that down?

It just puts more and more pressure on the PGA Tour to get the Saudi merger done instead of looking at deals with private equity. Because not only does it devalue the Tour for PE investors, it also makes the schism in golf that much bigger.

Interesting that none of Donnie T’s courses are on the 24 LIV schedule after he got so thirsty for the tour this year. I wonder if they’re prepping for a world where he’s back in the big chair. We know he can’t stand conflicts of interest.

I don't understand what's going with the PGA and Liv. I thought with the Saudis investing in the PGA that would stop the division.

So what's the plan going forward for all of this? I haven't been keeping up but saw Rahm is going to Liv now.

Rahm is the first player I don't blame for taking the money.

The PGA is going to merge into LIV anyway, why not take half a billion to do the same thing. It was a lot easier to have morals when the PGA did

I am not sure what Jay could do differently. He's up against a pit of endless money and greedy players.

If he continues with litigation against LIV, and even wins, what does that net the PGA Tour? He still has to compete with...endless amounts of money and greedy players.

The PGAs path to survival is to get back to what it was pre-LIV. Core fans watch the PGA Tour because it is the tour of elite golf competition. Cut the shit with guaranteed money, no cut events. Get rid of the moronic Fed Ex Cup staggered leaderboard and set up match play. It's not difficult.

You cannot compete with LIV because LIV is not a business. Rahm joining does not change their bottomline. Golf fans are not interested in LIV's set up.
