Over the last month I changed balls (old Kirkland to new Kirkland) which greatly decreased my spin. I also added a little bit of distance from the ball in my setup to get more regular contact in the middle of the face My average drive is up 18 yards to 259 and my fairway hit percentage is way up. I've had five drives in my last 36 holes longer than 280 yards, which was my previous record I also added a 22* wood and I'm getting that about 215 Naturally I've had terrible approach play but we're getting there
The biggest knock on Kirkland is supposed to be is their performance in wind, and it seems to never not be windy this spring
Yeah this is the windiest 2 months in Chicago history I believe. It really has been frustrating but I don't think I can blame them for my iron play. Drives are still going far at least
You realize that Homa is very endearing because he resembles one of us in a lot of ways You also realize that Homa resembling us is actually a really bad thing
I was there Tuesday-Friday last week. The worst the wind got was about 20 MPH right when we were on 11 at Pacific. Greatest place on the planet.
Way worse! My approaches have been so much worse it's more than counteracted my gains elsewhere. I've played 12 rounds this year and the lowest wind was 12mph so I'm feeling optimistic it recovers soon with all the other gains
Day 3 quick update: Played Pacific Dunes. Favorite course so far. Highlight of round was hole 2. Great drive, 115 to the pin, pull a complete Tin Cup and shoot it straight right through the fairway and into the gorse, take relief about 70 yards to a blind pin, ball takes one bounce and in the cup to save par. Playing Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails tomorrow. My feet and body hurt.
Honestly, fair enough. I don't know how you get up there and defend yourself without throwing Scottie under the bus
doing a club fitting this afternoon for irons, pretty excited! old cobra baffler game improvement irons are 10+ years old. thinking i'll go players distance this go round, fitting permitted.
Today is fitting day, apparently. I got fitted for fairway wood/hybrid. Needed something around a ~215 carry. Looked at Cobra, GT2, Qi35, and 440 5 hybrids and 440 7 & 9 wood. Think I’m going with the Ping 5H and 7w. That’ll give me solid gapping between 3w and 6i. 440 7 wood Qi 5H 440 5H
any reason for your large difference in club speed of those clubs from those swings iyo? Or just small sample size
Mix of small sample size/getting settled in the fitting to make sure I strike it well I’m usually around 100mph on my hybrid.
Just back from Forest Dunes, American Dunes, & Arcadia Bluffs. Teeing off at 5pm & still getting 18 in is glorious!
What a great week at Bandon. Everything hurts but wouldn’t change a thing. If you ever go out there just embrace the wind and don’t have high expectations. Once I did that and just enjoyed where I was at, I had a ton of fun. Ranking the courses is hard bc each one has its own identity and makes it fun. But here is where I would put them for me. I’m sure some of these rankings are relative to how I played on them. Pacific Dunes Bandon Trails Bandon Dunes Old Macdonald Sheep Ranch
Crazy after the Masters they were acting like he may sweep the majors and have this historic run. Instead Scottie is back on top and he’s at bottom of leaderboards.
I want to say there was an anecdote from Joe Lamagna that if Champ has led a round at your course it is probably trash and shouldn't be holding a tour event. It might be winning and not leading, and it might have been Hossler. But yeah
It’s also a really interesting view on Rory psychologically. Tiger had a one track mind focused entirely on golf that made him an absolute killer. It probably also caused all sorts of familial and personal issues off the course, but that’s neither here nor there. Rory isn’t that, despite the fact that he has elite talent. He has openly struggled with balancing being a father and a husband with being elite at the sport. He’s more human, in a lot of ways. But it also probably means he won’t get the most out of his golf talent. Now that he’s won the Grand Slam, he may be okay with that.
sheffler is an interesting case study along these lines. We’ll have to judge it later on but for now he seems to be threading that needle
Scottie seems to be able to compartmentalize golf, god, and family as his 3 only focuses pretty well. I bet he has like no friends at all.
Funny how almost everyone has a different opinion of the place. I dislike Pacific cause it was blowing 35 mph and I was a bit overcooked on the local flower. Trails Sheep Old Mack Bandon Dunes Pacific
He also completely stays out of the bullshit (see - lack of participation in indoor golf league), which is going to help a lot Rory stretched himself a ton the last few years, especially off the course. Doesn’t shock me he’s trying to regain some level of normalcy He’s also just not a complete psycho like Tiger is. I don’t think that’s surprising to learn, but at least interesting to see him admit
I wonder if Scottie would join a Dallas indoor team. Surprised they don’t have one already with the amount of Dallas PGA golfers.
Maybe Scottie just wanted to wait long enough to make sure he’d never have to be teammates with Tom Kim
After 3 trips there I am: Trails Bandon Old Mac Sheep Pacific But Pacific is the best combination of the entire property combined and would be worth an entire golf trip if it was the only course somewhere. That’s how great the entire place is. My first time there, I despised Old Mac and it’s climbed my rankings every time I’ve played it. That 3-10 stretch is a grind. Trails is in my top 4-5 courses I’ve ever played. 13 or 14 of those holes are just incredible beasts. 3, 10, and 13 on trails, 16 on Bandon, 3 and 4 at old Mac are some of my favorite holes in the world.
