I know a lot about getting into grad school because that's what I work with on a day to day basis. If I ever go for a PhD, I'll know exactly what to do at this point. If anybody is going through admissions process, I'm happy to help answer questions.

I assume TMB is past undergrad admission for the most part, but I can weigh in on college questions for your kids too.

Cliffs: have knowledge, want to share with anyone interested

My program axed GRE requirement in past year. Partly it was a COVID accommodation, but partly the field is just moving that way. We are not reinstating the requirement going forward

Why not both? The sport's more likely to lead to a scholarship, but the Photoshop skills are more likely to land a job and/or be an interesting person

On foreign language, for sure. We recommend you get in these courses right away and finish them in succession. Math is another that you need to stay in practice or may begin losing fluency.

In contrast, it would be ok to take some basic level classes as late as your senior year -- arts, humanities, social sciences, etc. It's the most fun to be an advisor for a program that has flexibility like that. Otherwise you're just like "hey Nursing/Engineering student, register for this block of classes. See you next semester"

Duke regularly contacts me to join their MBA program. My career experience lines up pretty well (Wall Street, moved up the ranks a good bit) but my grades in college (2009 grad) don’t seem to be Duke material.

Should I send them a dong pic to help my cause?

South Carolina has the full on MBA which is harder to get into, but also something called PMBA where you can kind of be off the street.

You don't have to step foot on campus, but I'm guessing every time you get an email with a big M on it you might get aggravated.

Be a cool kid like Clemson grads who go to SCAR for grad school and hang their Clem diploma up over the SCAR one!

Took the MAT to get into a PhD program. Was actually a really enjoyable (if that’s the right term) test.

2nd class of the program I was WAY in over my head so I dropped the class, then things got crazy and now I’m a year and a half removed and getting the itch to continue/find another program.

Transferring courses is harder at the grad level than at undergrad, but you can do it sometimes. Probably easiest to stick with the program you began if you can

That’s what I’m afraid of. It’s a sport management program and my undergrad/masters are more science/kinesiology based so the finance and economics classes recommended having had at least 1 masters level fin/econ course and I never even had that at the undergrad level.

The first class I took was statistics so that should be fairly transferable right?

Yes, and it sounds like the course can help you even if it doesn't officially "transfer" -- they don't have to accept it for credit for you to show them that you have completed finance/econ work at the graduate level. Kind of a prerequisite thing I guess.

Sometimes, a program won't count your course from your previous institution for credit hours, but they will still waive that requirement for you. (Example: Program requires theory course. You already took theory at previous institution. New school says you don't have to take theory again, but they do make you take something else to have enough hours.)

Any details on how tough getting into a Med School is these days, like South Carolina, for example? Any pro tips on how my Freshman can help her chances, i.e. what do the schools most want to see beyond grades and test scores? She's not big on extracurriculars, mostly works very hard on classes, works out a lot, and does Sorority stuff. 3.9 GPA after freshmen weedout classes at a decent (not great) state school, including 4.0 in Stem classes. Thanks.

I’ve never actually been to Athens. The program is in buckhead. There’s only a couple douchy people in the program I’ve met. Given it’s a professional program with classes at night or weekends, everyone is pretty chill and just focused on doing a good job and networking.

Most of the people that were in my MBA program were well into their 30s or older.

Got mine through Lynchburg College, now called University of Lynchburg. I had like a 3.8 GPA undergrad so my advisor during the admissions process told me to just take the GMAT and I’d get admitted. Didn’t matter what score I got, so I didn’t prepare at all for the test, just went in on the day I signed up to take it and winged it.

I had a pretty shitty GPA in college, yet have been able to land a decent job in the logistics field, and am now managing a large team with significant responsibility within my company. Is there a career point/age where college GPA ceases to matter at all during the application process? I doubt that I am there yet (28 years old), yet hoping in a few years to get into a good MBA program.

I've kicked around going to grad school for the last decade. Ideal it was going to be for Data Science. Have a few colleagues who got into GA Tech's program and it's less than 10k total.

For the past year I've gotten into a lot of data engineering work for clients. Like it a lot, but there's no real grad program for data engineering. It's either CS or data science. If I could avoid all the math in DS I'd be happy, can do it just don't want to. But feel like CS might be too much for me with no CS degree.

Also looked at a few IT Mgmt type masters that might just check the box if I go back to industry..

Med school, law school, dental school, vet school, etc. = "Professional School". My direct knowledge is more on the "Grad School" side, i.e. getting a Masters or PhD in something. That said, I know a few tips.

Major -- You don't have to be a Biology major to go to med school. I am told that it's actually better these days if you major in something other than Bio because everyone does that and you need to stand out more. There are other science majors, but you can actually be any major and go to med school as long as you complete certain pre-reqs in undergrad. (Biology 1 and 2, Chemistry 1 and 2, Physics 1 and 2, Organic Chem 1 and 2). You could be a Studio Art major and go to med school if you have all those classes on your transcript.

Research -- Undergrad research is a great feather in the cap for any major seeking grad school admission, but particularly vital in medicine and the sciences. Find a professor to work with and start helping with their research ASAP. You can even start freshman year sometimes. You may have to do it on a completely volunteer basis, but sometimes you can get class credit or paid a salary. All the pre-med kids load up on the Medicine professors and the Biology professors that deal with the human body, so those opportunities can be harder to find. My suggestion to someone would be look at another research area with transferrable skills. Nobody is shaking down the plant-based Biology researchers -- lots of opportunity there. Chemistry tends to have more openings than Biology. Look at Bio for sure, but don't be afraid to do research with another type of professor if not available.

PA School -- Many students tell me "oh, I want to be a doctor but I'm not trying to go to med school. I'm going to PA school (Physicians Assistant). It's way easier and you get to do everything a doctor does basically." No idea how true any of that is, but I guess keep PA school in mind if med school seems like it will be too expensive, too difficult, etc.

"Swim in your own lane" -- This is good advice for any kind of Honors kid. They are around a bunch of high-achieving freaks like themselves, so it puts tons of pressure on them. They see Johnny just got an internship, Sally just got a fellowship, etc. You have to focus on doing your best and not pine over everyone else or you'll drive yourself crazy. You'll end up where you need to be in the end <3

killrbee7 or any other med school grad can add to this/tell me where I'm wrong
