Let him have his shitty opinion of Detroit, who gives a fuck? Favorite place to beach besides grand haven and holland?
Favorite beach is tough. The whole Lake Michigan coast is pretty solid. Sleeping Bear is the most beautiful but I think that the Little Traverse Bay Area has he best beauty/ things to do balance. I spend a decent amount of time on the Huron side around Alpena. Love the beach and view but it is desolate as hell.
Do you love online gaming and did you attend Ferris state? If so you are my weird ass neighbor from college, I spent one night in bad axe. Nothing happened. Literally, nothing.
My high school used to play Bad Axe and all the schools in the thumb. Nothing like two and a half hour bus rides to Cros-Lex.
I think Pere Marquette in Muskegon is a much better beach than Grand Haven, and I live here. Obviously the surrounding shops and downtown right near GH sets it apart, but strictly beaches, Pere Marquette is miles better.
I work/went to law school in detroit. I'm there daily and love it. And with my job I'm constantly reminded how shitty parts are, but if you go to right places, I love the city. Just stay out of the neighborhoods basically
Hard to beat Traverse City and the surrounding area in the summer. Hidden gem to the rest of the United States imo.
Anyone ever stayed up at the Grand Hotel? Going up there around memorial day (I think that's when it is) as some of my uncle's guests during their big Knights of Columbus gathering.
Do you think once they eventually finish 131 all they way up to Traverse it will make a better or worse place? Kind of the nostalgia of going up there, is the 15 differents you can get there non of which require you to exit off a highway.
131 goes to Petoskey, doesn't it? Through Kalkaska? Are there plans to take a highway all the way to TC? While I could see the use for it 10-12 weeks a year, I have to imagine it would kill a lot of small towns that rely on that traffic driving through them.
I stayed there a few times but it's been a while. It's extremely ornate but most of the rooms are tiny. They used to have an all Jamaican wait staff. Paula Dean would probably love it but I found it uncomfortable.
My grandpa drove a horse carriage for the Grand Hotel in the 60s and 70s after he retired from farming and logging in the UP. I have a postcard somewhere.
My dad's family all lives in traverse city, half have moved 30 minutes out of town because it's getting too crowded. To be fair they are all kind of anti social and moved up there in the 80s and early 90s to get away from metro detroit
Tonight's commute should be enjoyable * LIGHT SNOW WILL PERIST THROUGH THE MORNING COMMUTE. THE SNOW WILL THEN INCREASE IN INTENSITY DURING THE AFTERNOON BECOMING HEAVY AT TIMES BETWEEN 2 PM AND 8 PM EST. * STORM TOTAL ACCUMULATION 6 TO 9 INCHES.
It's been snowing like a mofo the last couple of weeks. I'll be there next week. Weather forecast: 60 and rainy.
I'm hitting up Crazy Daze at Boyne in two wknds. I definitely didnt expect to be able to board up there this late, but snow in March has me hoping.
I've actually been surprised by how poorly some of the municipalities handle snow. I figured you guys had this shit down pat.
As I'm sure you know, considering you literally live next door, they dont touch the roads around here till after the snow stops. It sucks
I probably wouldn't live here anymore if it wasn't for the easiness of being able to hop in the car and spend every weekend in the summer up north.
Some of them are terrible, some are great. Oakland County is pretty hit or miss. The roads out my way are usually in great shape within a couple hours of the snow starting.
Yeah the other day I'm just driving along, enjoying no one being on the roads and went from clean pavement to nearly untouched pavement out of nowhere
The highways from county to county are something, too. When I drove in from Chicago on the regular it I'd usually get at least one storm a year and you could definitely tell which counties gave a shit and which ones didn't. Oakland would virtually ignore the SW side of the county - I-96 - and then you'd hit Livinston and the roads would be pristine. The west side of the state does a great job, but they they get a ton more snow and have to keep after it.
Dammit, the snow started at about 4:45pm and the highways home are already a mess. Fuck it, I'm leaving before it ices.
I left a half hour later than I should have... Got so disgusted with traffic I pulled into a White Castle. My car now smells.
West side is getting pummeled but nothing that we haven't seen. I just avoided 131 altogether though.
