Eh, for right or wrong, I think West Michigan is going to start opening more May 1st regardless of what the Whitmer says. Several physician practices are scheduling more patients, several businesses are going back in some capacity that date that are currently closed, I know a few friends that own construction/landscaping places that are going to start working anyway. Feels like things are already moving that way over here.
Still up almost double from the 70 something yesterday. Not exactly a positive trend as we track towards 5/1
That will be the interesting part of all of it. Will there be a more regional approach or blanket orders. I don’t blame those industries for wanting back to work it’s peak season and likely can be done without much exposure.
I don’t see how they can’t at this point. Whatever message Whitmer is saying about Detroit, that feels like a different planet. There have been 25 total deaths (when I left work today) in 5+ counties around Kent. There have been 8 deaths in Muskegon county, 5 in Ottawa Co. Residents have been practicing social distancing for 7 weeks at the end of this month. I think she has to treat parts of the state differently. Because if she doesn’t, people are going to do what they want regardless, at least that’s the feeling I get.
People from Southeast Michigan are going to go to West Michigan if WM opens up, and it’ll get real ugly there as a result.
Yeah SE Michigan residents are looking for a reason to visit west and northern MI. I know I am. We have two trips to Grand Rapids, 1 to Petoskey and another to Traverse just between 6/1-7/15 and plans for Memorial Day as well. She will have a hard time opening up parts and at the same time telling others they can’t travel. It’s a very tough spot. I’d imagine if she wanted to play hard ball could start enforcing and fining more aggressively for those that don’t comply to the restrictions but that could be political suicide
I’m guessing based on your previous counts those facilities weren’t allotted much of the resources based on need.
Yeah I know the hospital system I work for, they have a full floor dedicated to it with the ability to open another full floor for positive COVID patients. Approx. 80 beds. They have the ability to test in the ER, results come back in an hour or less, and based on the result determines the floor, if they need to be admitted. Additionally, I know another place in town has been set up with 100 beds, if needed. Workers are given PPE to be used 1 mask per day with a papper, gloves, gown, the whole works. I have co workers that work directly on the covid floor and they currently have enough PPE to handle many more patients than they have now. How many patients do you plan for? Hard to know, but it feels like there is at least a plan in place.
One of my best friends is an orthopedic surgeon for one of the large hospital systems in the Detroit area and he is starting surgeries again this weekend after being shut down since the beginning of this. They had to arrange for different places for patients to recover, make sure it doesn't take away PPE/resources from the COVID stuff, but the green light has been given. So, another sign that the hospitals now feel they have a plan in place.
I hope some outdoor stuff opens up so whining conservatives shut the fuck up. Wah... I can't golf!!! Waaaah... nobody can mow my lawn!!! Waaaaaaah... I can't go boating in 50 degree weather!!!!!!! God what a bunch of fucking babies.
Yeah man, it isn't like nurseries and green houses have a very specific window to sell their plants and goods before they go bad! My aunt may not have to close her small floral shop for good!
How many retirees should we sacrifice for your aunt's business to remain operational? What if we mix in a kid with some heart issue? As long as we're doing business!!!
Exactly the same thing. There are perfectly reasonable ways to keep social distancing and not increase the spread while still allowing certain industries to return to work at some capacity.
Yes. Although some of them not working would actually kill more people and most of them aren't doing it to support a hobby or for horticultural aesthetics. That's essential vs. non-essential. And I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but that is the reality of it. Every tier of being open right now comes with a non-zero body count. Somebody is determining what body count is acceptable and that's how the world works. It works that way during normal times too, with tobacco and sugar and alcohol and everything else. This is just pinpointing how selfish some people are - golf and boating are the two most egregious I've seen in Michigan, but getting a haircut and landscaping are pretty high up there to me. I bet your aunt doesn't want to kill anyone for her continued economic success either. Maybe she does.
Why can’t barbershop and hair salons open, as long as you wear a mask or have a temperature taken prior to walking in the door.
Anyone that thinks more people are going to die because someone goes boating, golfing, or landscaping is dumb as fuck.
Anyone who voted for that baboon who today suggested injecting disinfectant is dumb as fuck. Not the people who would rather protect the public than have dipshits forego proper social distancing to participate in leisure activities.
Yeah that’s such a convoluted opinion and we are so far off that I am not even going to respond to that garbage. My initial point that was that Whitmer’s first order was so non-sensical that it needed some changes. You pointed out the boating and golfing, etc. But that order also didn’t allow anyone to travel to their second residence, (while obviously still paying taxes on it during this time), didn’t allow (solo) landscapers to work even with supplies on hand since February. The well documented stores not selling a car seats. Nurseries and greenhouses having to waste a full year of flowers, etc. Those issues she has rescinded with her extension, which seems like common sense. I don’t think things need to open immediately or anything close, but there are plenty of businesses that can return to work safely and not put others at risk that Whitmer completely handcuffed previously.
Yes, I understand what you think. I get it from every conservative I know. You seriously don't understand why they didn't want people to travel up north? Can you maybe work through it just trying to play devil's advocate, or are you too invested?
Yes, I am acutely aware of the dangers of overwhelming those health systems up north (I work for a hospital system), but there are just as many vacation homes from Ludington to St. Joe. She didn’t ban travel to just Traverse City or Charlevoix. Like I said, her initial shelter in place was stupid, and surprisingly, a blanket order that has obvious flaws in it frustrated people.
You don’t think people go to their cottages/property in spring to clean up, turn stuff back on, put docks in water, etc? Especially with everyone basically at home? That’s why I heard so many people frustrated about it.
Some, sure vast majority absolutely not. The lakes around here barely have docks in. The weather has been absolute dogshit thus far.
A lot of people just want to get away. They’ve been locked home in their home all day for the past 6 weeks. They should be able to travel to their vacation home if they choose to.
See both sides. But how is going to Grayling where everything else is also locked down any different than your current residence? Getting out just to get out is exactly what was trying to be prevented with all of this
I want to believe those things have nothing to do with it. Really just comes down to people giving a shit about the big picture. Sadly too many still think its just the flu so what’s the big deal
Haha, I love it. Someone presents an ounce of, “hey, this doesn’t make much sense” or “have we thought about other ways to do this...” and are immediately met with OMG LIVES, YOU DONT GET IT. Ah well, I am over the back and forth. My wife and I will continue to report to our essential jobs next week and will apparently continue to kill people while being on the front lines. Prick.
