Around the minors from last night
    (34-52) Norfolk Tide 1, (38-48) Gwinnett Braves 3

    • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 1-3 HR, RBI, R
    • Matt Lipka, CF: 1-3 2B, R
    • Rob Wooten, SP: 6.0IP 6H 0R 1BB 4K
Rob Wooten followed up his 6 no-hit innings in his last outing with 6 scoreless innings today. Wooten is in a zone right now having allowed only 4 ER over his last 10 appearances with 22 strikeouts and 3 walks during that stretch (26.1IP). Wooten didn’t face too much pressure for the first five innings - not allowing any batter to reach third. In the 6th Wooten faced his biggest trouble when he had runners on 1st and 3rd and no out. Xavier Avery, who singled earlier in the inning and went 1st to 3rd on a single by Paul Janish, was thrown out at home after going on contact on a fielders choice by Trey Mancini.

Matt Marksberry replaced Wooten and retired the side in the 7th getting three flyouts (two in the infield). He came out again in the 8th and gave up a solo HR to the Tide’s Xavier Henry. He was then replaced by Brandon Cunniff who quickly retired the side on 22 pitches. Jose Ramirez then came in the 9th and needed just 8 pitches (7 strikes) to retire the side.

All of the offense came in 3rd and 4th innings. In the 3rd Lipka doubled and was brought in by Mel Rojas Jr. who hit his first AAA homerun. Rio Ruiz added a solo homer in the 4th for the 3rd and final run of the game for Gwinnett.

    (42-40) Montgomery Biscuits 7, (40-41) Mississippi Braves 8
    Box Score

    • Ozzie Albies, 2B: 2-4 RBI, R, BB
    • Dansby Swanson, SS: 2-4 2(2B), 2RBI, R
    • Dustin Peterson, LF: 1-4 2RBI
    • A.J. Minter, RP: 1.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K
The runs started quickly as Ozzie led off the game for Mississippi with a single and was then brought in home by a Connor Lien triple. This was Lien’s first start after battling soreness the past 4 days. Lien came around when Dansby added a ground-rule double of his own to put Mississippi up 2. Joseph Odom led of the 2nd with a double and scored the 3rd run of the game after Johan Camargo singled to center. Camargo was moved to 2nd after Jordy Lara singled to center as well. Dansby Swanson then picked up his second ground-rule double which scored Johan Camargo to make the game 5-0. Dustin Peterson followed that hit up with a single of his own scoring Dansby Swanson and Jordy Lara to extend the lead to 6-0.

After sailing through the first 2 innings the wheels fell off for Andrew Thurman as he walked the lead off hitter and gave up a 2R homer to Jake DePew. Thurman then gave up 2 singles and a walk to load the bases with 1 out and gave up a grandslam Casey Gillaspie to put the Biscuits up 7-6. He walked the very next batter before being taken out of the game. His final line: 2.1IP 4H 7ER 4BB 1K 2HR.

    Thurman pre-bus crash
    2.51 ERA, 1.206 WHIP

    Thurman post-bus crash
    6.45 ERA, 1.638 WHIP

Akeel Morris replaced Thurman and threw two wild pitches allowing the Biscuits to take the lead 7-6.

Luckily Mississippi responded with two runs of their own: one via an RBI single by Ozzie Albies, and the other via passed ball which allowed Jordy Lara to score. Those were the final two runs of the game as the the two teams, after allowing a total of 15 runs in 3 innings, were held scoreless for the final 6 innings. A.J. Minter made his AA debut needing 23 pitches to accumulate a line of 1.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K. In 14 games he has yet to yield a run. Caleb Dirks contributed with 1.1 innings of scoreless work picking up 3 strikeouts, and Jason Hursh finished off the game with 2 innings of 1 hit ball striking out 5 and walking 1.

    Note: Minter’s OPS-against is < .260 on the season.

    (42-39) Greenville Drive 4, (34-48) Rome Braves 3

    • Austin Riley, 3B: 1-4 HR, R, RBI
    • Lucas Herbert, C: 0-4, K
    • Touki Toussaint, SP: 6.0IP 6H 2ER 3BB 6K
Toussaint settled down very nicely after leading off the game giving up a triple, and allowing the runner to score on a wild pitch. He then settled down and retired the next 3 in the inning.

Rome tied the game thanks to Austin Riley’s 6th homerun on the season in the 1st inning and went up 2-1 in the 3rd after a Justin Ellison double scored Luke Dykstra who of course singled earlier in the inning. The Drive then went on to tie the game in the 5th following a double by Josh Ockimey with two outs that allowed Jeremy Rivera, who doubled to start off the 5th, to score. Touki then went on to retire 4 of the next 6 batters to finish his outing. Oriel L Caicedo replaced Touki and contributed 3 perfect innings striking out 3. He should have gotten the win because in the 9th Justin Ellison hit his second double of the game and was at 3rd with 2 outs however an aggressive attempt to score on a wild pitch but was thrown out at home.

Matt Custred came in, in the 10th walked 4 out of the first 5 batters, including walking in a run, allowing Greenville to go up 3-2. The Drive added on one more via a sacrifice fly to Tate Anthony making the lead 4-2.

Rome had a great opportunity in the bottom of the 10th when Leudys Baez singled to put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Alejandra Salazar followed with a single to the third baseman and it should have been runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out however Baez inexplicably attempted to go 1st to 3rd on an infield single and was thrown out by 10 feet at 3rd. Ray-Patrick Didder was then hit by a pitch putting runners on 1st and 2nd, a wild pitch allowed both runners to move up to 2nd and 3rd but Luke Dykstra struck out to end the game.

    (6-7) Danville Braves 3, Burlington Royals 2
    Box Score

    • Brett Cumberland, C: 1-4, RBI, 2K
    • Isranel Wilson, CF: 0-4 2K
    • Kolby Allard, SP: 5.1 IP 6H 2ER 1BB 8K
Danville went up early following another Tyler Neslony double, his 3rd in 3 games. He went on to score after Brett Cumberland singled to left putting Danville up 1-0. Cumberland was then caught stealing, and Ryan O’Malley hit a solo homer to put Danville up 2-0 in the 2nd. Fast forward to the 8th and Jared James singled, stole 2nd (his 3rd stolen base of the season), was moved up by a Matt Gonzalez ground out, and scored on a wild pitch.

Kolby Allard made his 3rd start in Danville and struck out 8 over 5.1 innings. Since the move to rookie ball Allard has put up some impressive numbers: 2.35 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 11.2K/9.

The Red Sox's best option would probably be to do a little one-stop shopping: They could land all three needs in a deal with the Braves that would land them Julio Teheran, Arodys Vizcaino and Adonis Garcia, but that could be costly; the Braves would be looking for at least one of their top two position prospects, infielder Yoan Moncada and/or outfielder Andrew Benintendi. Both those players profile as impact players, and there's no way the Red Sox would agree to include one of them, much less both. The Braves would then ask about catcher/outfielder Blake Swihart and third baseman Rafael Devers. Again, a huge price, but including one of those guys might be something the Red Sox would consider, especially because the Braves don't have to trade Teheran, who is under team control through 2020 at a club-friendly deal.

Baseball Prospectus midseason top 50 prospects

    BP Top 50
    The Best Midseason Prospects
by Craig Goldstein and BP Prospect Staff

Let’s make a couple things clear right up top:

    1) There are no recent draftees or international prospect signings in this ranking. That means no Kevin Maitan or Corey Ray.

    2) There are no prospect-eligible players who are currently in the majors in this ranking. This means no Lucas Giolito (pitching today for the Nationals) but yes Julio Urias (probably throwing one inning at a time for a while in Glendale to stay fresh/limit workload).

    10. Dansby Swanson, SS, Atlanta Braves
    Why He'll Succeed:
His above-average hit, power, glove, arm, hair and smile could power him to a marketability we haven’t seen since Jeter.

Why He Might Fail: All of that above-averageness might be somehow less than the sum of the parts, in which case he’s still above average.

    21. Ozhaino Albies, 2B, Atlanta Braves
    Why He’ll Succeed
: As a plus runner with instincts for the game and excellent contact ability, Albies is the quintessential table-setter that can play either middle infield position.

Why He Might Fail: Albies’ free-swinging approach at the plate could be exploited by advanced pitchers, preventing him from hitting for average and getting on base to utilize his game-changing speed.

    41. Sean Newcomb, LHP, Atlanta Braves
    Why He’ll Succeed:
He has a big fastball, a potential plus curveball, and has struck out a batter per or better at every minor-league level. Did we mention he's left-handed?

Why He Might Fail: Well, we definitely haven't mentioned yet that he walks a lot of dudes. Despite fairly simple mechanics, Newcomb struggles to repeat his delivery, and still lacks a clear third pitch. He may end up better-suited to a late-inning role.

    Last night's prospect report highlights
    (41-41) Mississippi Braves 3, (42-41) Montgomery Biscuits 4

    Ozzie Albies, 2B: 2-4, .389/.457/.513

    Dustin Peterson, LF: 1-4, 2B, RBI, .274/.335/.414

Dansby Swanson, SS: 0-3, BB, .276/.355/.425

    Rob Whalen, SP: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 2.20 ERA

If you doubted whether Ozzie Albies was ready for AAA, his return trip has destroyed all of that and left a clear image that he does not belong stuck back in AA just because Swanson is there. His .389 average is the highest by any AA player since 2012, and is only topped by a player who was 27 at the time. His AA OPS is higher than George Springer’s (Springer was 4 years older) and his average and OBP are higher than both Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa, Bryant 3 years older than Albies and Correa 1.5. As for the rest of the team, COnnor Lien had a good day at the plate with 2 hits, as hid Joey Meneses with 2 of his own.

Rob Whalen was yet again dominant, this time for 6 innings. His 9 strikeouts were his highest in hit career since he struck out 10 on July 23, 2013. His ERA is the 3rd lowest in the Southern League, he is second in the league in strikeouts, and has pitched more innings than anyone else in the Southern League. Whalen’s recent success has been awe-inspiring. Since May 22 he averages nearly 6.5 innings per start, has a 1.09 ERA, has allowed 6.7 H/9, struck out 8.7 per 9 IP, walked 2.3 per 9, and allowed only 1 home run. By my calculations that puts his FIP in that time at about 1.59.

    (33-50) Carolina Mudcats 5, (50-31) Salem Red Sox 1 Game 1

    Tanner Murphy, C: 2-4, 2B, RBI, .173/.275/.306

Braxton Davidson, RF: 0-2, 2 BB, RBI, .227/.340/.357

    Caleb Beech, SP: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3.27 ERA

    (34-50) Carolina Mudcats 11, (50-32) Salem Red Sox 5 Game 2

Keith Curcio, CF: 1-4, HR, .256/.328/.357

Braxton Davidson, RF: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, .232/.345/.371

    Jordan Edgerton, 3B: 1-3, BB, .188/.224/.288

    Taylor Lewis, RP: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0.00 ERA

Fresh off of an 8 game losing streak, the Mudcats have snapped out with a 3 game winning streak and now have a chance to sweep the first place Red Sox. In game 1 the offense was able to capitalize off of 9 walks and score 5. Tanner Murphy knocked his 5th extra base hit in 12 games since returning from the DL. Game 2 was led by a home run burst from the middle 3 hitters in Davidson, Isaias Tejada, and Sal Giardina who combined for 3 home runs and 7 RBIs. Keith Curcio had 4 hits in that one, and Jordan Edgerton had 2.

Caleb Beech pitched a really effective game for the Mudcats, allowing only 1 run in 5.2 innings. He was relieved by Philip Pfieffer, who recorded a strikeout for each of his 4 outs in his stint. Game 2 was led off by Zack Bird, who gave up 2 runs in 2.2 innings, and he was followed by Carlos Salazar who allowed 2 runs in his inning of work. Taylor Lewis deservedly took the win in Game 2, with 2.1 scoreless innings of work to extend his earned run free streak to 22 innings in a row.

    (35-48) Rome Braves 4, (42-40) Greeneville Drive 0

    Leudys Baez, LF: 2-3, 2B, .262/.333/.323

    Austin Riley, 3B: 2-4, 2B, .266/.311/.421

    Ray-Patrick Didder, DH: 1-4, 2 SB, .262/.376/.376

    Ricardo Sanchez, SP: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 5.27 ERA

You guys were looking for minor league wins, and along with the MBraves, Rome has made a second half charge and sits in first place despite the absence of their star player. Austin Riley’s 2 hits are the latest in a pretty long charge as he has hits in 12 of his last 14 games, and has hit .298/.347/.500 since the start of June. He now leads the system in doubles, and has struck out a hefty but much improved 23.6% of the time-a more than acceptable rate given his power potential. In a more hitter friendly park, he could easily be looking at double digit home runs at this point in the season.

Ricardo Sanchez won a heavyweight battle with Anderson Espinoza, firing 5 scoreless innings despite some control issues. This is the first time since the beginning of the season that Sanchez strung together 2 consecutive good starts, a good sign for him going forward. He was relieved by Grayson Jones who pitched 2 scoreless innings, and then by Eric O’Flaherty who pitched another scoreless rehab outing. Josh Graham closed it out with a strikeout in a perfect inning of pitching.

    (3-8) GCL Braves 6, (8-3) GCL Tigers West 7

    Ricardo Rodriguez, C: 1-3, 2B, .286/.286/.429

    Randy Ventura, RF: 3-4, 2 RBI, .308/.348/.359

    Derian Cruz, SS: 1-5, .341/.341/.488

    Joey Wentz, SP: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA

The GCL Braves haven’t won a game in July yet, through no lack of effort from Randy Ventura. Ventura knocked his 2nd 3 hit game of the season, and knocked in 2 runs. His RBIs lead the team, which incredibly impressive given he is the leadoff hitter. Derian Cruz added another hit to his total, and now has 1 in 8 of his 9 games this season. He has yet to draw a walk on the season, and despite all of the hits hasn’t stolen a base since the 2nd game.

Alan Rangel started his first 2 games quite well, but couldn’t get the strikeout pitch working and allowed 4 runs in 3 innings as a result. Odalvi Javier pitched 3 innings of one run ball in relief of Rangel, and between this year and last year has a 2.00 GCL ERA with 28K in 27 IP.

Problem is it seems like all of the dudes are in the lower levels. Swanbies will be our middle infield for awhile starting next year, but the pitching is concerning to me. I'm not seeing dudes. I'm seeing a bunch of #3's - if that. Most of these guys still struggle to consistently throw strikes and/or stay healthy. And of course, there's not any impact bats.

Still Team Coppy, but I think this rebuild's going to take longer than our front office is letting on. The impact players are at Rome and lower. Next year is going to be another shitstorm. 2018 will be the first year we show progress. 2020 is playoffs time.

It's actually why I'm against it now. Before I thought we could fill a rotation with some combination of Folty, Wisler, Blair, Jenkins, Banuelos, Gant, Sims and Perez. Now, I don't think we can.

-Folty is plagued by inconsistency and you wonder if the bone spurs means surgery is coming sooner or later. Still hasn't ruled out the reliever rumors.

-Blair was fucking awful and apparently needs way more time.

-Sims can't throw strikes, doesn't have a third pitch, and got demoted.

-Banuelos can't stay healthy. I don't trust him until he makes it through a full season in AAA, but he might be a lefty reliever.

-Jenkins' periphs scare the shit out of me.

-I actually like Gant. 3 pitch mix, sneaky good stuff, deceptive, and knows where the ball is going. But now he's gotta stay healthy and stick.

-Perez wasn't bad until his injury, but will injuries be an issue considering he looks like he slams six-packs between innings? Does he have the stuff to stick in a rotation? He's certainly not more than a 4 or 5.

-Wisler is the only guy who has stuck in the rotation so there's a lot to be said about that, I guess.

I'm not saying we're going to be world beaters anytime soon. I'm saying we appear to have some impact bats and arms in the lower levels with some big league regulars sprinkled throughout. Swanson and Albies are nice. I never thought this would be a quick rebuild, in fact, I thought the contrary. I think we'll be improved next year, but were far away from the playoffs.

He's also crazy and freaks out after every batter he retires.

Not sure why Freddie didn't tag on a ball that deep in the RF corner.

Freddie scores from second in a base hit to right. Tested Heyward .

Alvarez gives up a couple base runners. Cabrera comes in with 2 on and nobody out, gets a double play ball, and then a shallow fly to close it out.

    Nice win.

I hope we keep JT and trade viz . We have a lot of good arms in the pen and turning Viz into a piece for the line up would be awesome .

Once again Red Sox bloggers don't understand the concept of supply and demand. With long contracts on both of those guys there is no need for us to trade them. If you want good players you have to give up good things in return, not every team is Arizona.

I believe he's wrong about Vizcaino's service time as well . He say first year arb and assumed he's online under control two more seasons . I think he's a super two guy and under control for three .

correct it should be three, these guys just seem butt hurt that we won't just turn over players to them for 2nd tier prospects

Yea, their fans here and elsewhere are the same way. That lineup smashes the ball at times . Adding even a middle of the rotation starter and a legit back end arm makes them real threats.

Speaking of the Sox and the bullpen, Viz has been better than CK this year imo. At least until recently . I think Snit has overworked him a bit. I'd kill for a manager that uses his pen competently.

The great thing is, Fried may be better than all of those guys.
