Six weeks after the Braves entered exclusive negotiations with Sarasota County, Fla., about a new spring-training facility, the parties have reached agreement on the key terms of a proposed deal.

A 27-page term sheet and letter of intent, outlining the financial and operational details of a deal, will be considered by the board of commissioners of the southwest Florida county at a meeting Tuesday.

If the commissioners approve the agreement, as is being recommended by county staff, a series of more definitive final contracts will be negotiated.

The term sheet describes a $75.4 million facility to be built in the city of North Port and funded by Sarasota County, the state of Florida, North Port, the Braves and a private developer.

The stadium, to open in time for the Braves’ 2019 spring training, would have 6,500 fixed seats and 1,500 berm seats. The outfield dimensions would mirror those of SunTrust Park, the Braves’ new home in Cobb County.

The spring complex would include six full practice fields, two half fields and a 55,000-square-foot building housing major- and minor-league clubhouses and executive offices, according to the proposed agreement.

The deal, if approved and completed, would continue the Braves’ penchant for securing taxpayer funds for stadiums. Previous such projects include SunTrust Park and minor-league stadiums in Gwinnett County, Rome, Ga., and Pearl, Miss.

About $21.3 million of the cost of the spring-training facility would be covered by bonds to be repaid from Sarasota County tourism taxes and another $13.1 million by bonds to be repaid by the state of Florida, according to the term sheet. The state money, if approved, would come from a spring-training retention fund.

The remaining $41 million in bonds, plus interest, would be repaid from contributions over 30 years from North Port ($300,000 per year), the developer ($300,000 per year) and the Braves ($2 million to $2.5 million per year, the exact amount depending on annual debt service).

In addition, Sarasota County and the Braves would share capital maintenance costs, with each contributing a total of about $5.6 million over 30 years.

The Braves would be responsible for the up-front costs, estimated at $7.5 million, of furniture, fixtures and equipment not included in the $75.4 million budget, such as the main video board.

Beyond the shared capital maintenance costs, the Braves would be responsible for all routine expenses of operating and maintaining the facility. The team would retain all revenue, except from a limited number of county and developer events. The Braves plan to sell the naming rights.

The facility would be part of a master-planned community in the West Villages district in North Port.

The deal also is subject to approval of the North Port city commission, which will consider it after the county commission acts.

According to the term sheet, the developer intends to build a mixed-use complex beyond the left-field wall of the stadium. The complex will be built in phases, “subject to market conditions,” with the first phase planned for a fall 2019 opening. The development will potentially include residences, a hotel and commercial, retail and office space.

Also as part of the training facility, but not included in its $75.4 million budget, the Braves plan a privately funded “academy” that would operate year-round for player development and rehabilitation purposes. It could include lodging accommodations for up to 145 players and staff, a 200-seat dining hall and a 200-seat auditorium.

The Braves, who have held spring training at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports near Orlando since 1997, have sought a new spring home in Florida for more than two years in order to get closer to other teams’ facilities.

Braves officials discussed possible deals with Pinellas County (St. Petersburg), Collier County (Naples) and Palm Beach County, but none of those talks gained much momentum.

MLB nixed the St. Petersburg possibility by saying the area should focus on a new regular-season stadium for the Tampa Bay Rays. Collier County commissioners voted unanimously in December to discontinue talks with the Braves, saying tax dollars should be used instead for beach restoration and roads. Palm Beach County had interest but no apparent funding source after building a stadium that opened this month for the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros.

The Braves agreed Jan. 17 to negotiate exclusively with Sarasota County, which had been in talks with the team since early last year.

    KEY TERMS

Major provisions in the term sheet outlining a proposed deal for a Braves spring-training facility in Sarasota County, Fla., subject to governmental approvals:

    • Cost is $75.4 million, funded by Sarasota County, the state of Florida, the city of North Port, the Braves and a private developer. (See accompanying story for funding breakdown.)

    • Goal is to complete stadium by Jan. 15, 2019.

    • 6,500 fixed seats and 1,500 berm seats.

    • Braves would be responsible for routine expenses of operating and maintaining the facility. Braves and Sarasota County would equally fund capital maintenance and repairs.

    • Braves would retain all revenue, except from a limited number of county and developer events.

    • Braves commit to hold spring training there for 30 years, with two team options to extend for successive five-year periods.

    • Field dimensions, such as outfield distances, wall heights and amount of foul territory, would mirror those of SunTrust Park.

Max Fried and the Braves’ Risk Tolerance

    by Travis Sawchik - February 28, 2017

Max Fried is a dude again.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that it is so. Being a dude in baseball is much preferable to being a just a guy.

After a lengthy rehab from Tommy John surgery and a shaky return, Fried finished the 2016 minor-league season by striking out 44 against seven walks in 25 innings over his final four starts. He touched 97 mph and the knee-melting curveball was back. According to the reviews out of Braves camp, he has picked up this spring where he left off in the fall:

    [IMG]Jim Powell @Jim_Powell
    1st look: @MaxFried32 faced 3-4-5. MCabrera's only weak contact of day(out 4-3). JDMartinez 6-3. JUp K. All 3 late on every fastball. #legit

    7:43 PM - 27 Feb 2017

You might recall that Fried was once the second-best pitcher on his high-school team, behind staff ace Lucas Giolito, but was talented enough to go seventh overall in the 2012 draft.

After an encouraging start to his career, ranked 53rd in Baseball America’s preseason rankings in 2014, Fried required Tommy John surgery in August of that season. Despite the surgery, the Braves wanted him included as a key piece in a trade that sent Justin Upton to San Diego four months later.

Fried is emblematic of the Braves’ approach to and acceptance of risk under president John Hart. All three of the Braves’ first-round picks during the Hart regime have been high-school pitchers. Twelve of their first 14 picks in the 2015 draft were pitchers, and seven of their first eight picks in 2016 were pitchers. Maybe pitchers were just often the best player on their board, but it feels like a strategy was implemented. Kolby Allard (No. 37), Mike Soroka (No. 48), Ian Anderson (No. 66) and Sean Newcomb (No. 78) are all arms drafted or acquired by the Braves to rank in Baseball America’s top-100 list this spring. The list doesn’t include Fried, who has perhaps the most upside of them all.

As the sport deals with an epidemic of pitching-related injuries and Tommy John surgeries, as clubs like the Chicago Cubs have used premium picks to draft position players and seemingly become more risk averse with regard to amateur arms, the Braves have gone in the opposite direction, loading up on arms and risk.

The club, of course, understands the perils associated with young arms. I interviewed Hart when he was still at MLB Network for a story about the Pirates’ historic commitment to prep arms in the draft.

“A truism is if you have 10, you can really count on two of them making it,” Hart said. “I came up in the (1980s) and never believed it. I said, ‘Come on, there can’t be that much attrition.’ Then bang: This guy gets hurt. This guy doesn’t develop a third pitch. … You can never have enough pitching.”

What’s also interesting about this quality-from-quantity approach is that the Braves have been so pitching-focused despite leading baseball in Tommy John surgeries since 2005. But this is, of course, a relatively new front-office group. The organization parted ways with long-time pitching coach Roger McDowell in November, and while one individual can hardly be blamed for the injuries, it is perhaps a signal of a different philosophy in the club’s handling of pitchers.

For instance, the new leadership group has exhibited a more conservative approach with return-to-action timetables. Fried didn’t pitch at all in 2015 and went nearly 21 months between minor-league starts.

Wrote David O’Brien for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

He was held out the entire 2015 season by the Braves, whose current front office errs on the side of caution with prospects coming off surgeries. They now add months to typical rehab periods, after the Braves of the past had pitchers Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy and Jonny Venters get re-injured following Tommy John surgery and 12-14 month rehabs.

“It was a long time,” Fried said. “The two-year rehab process and on top of that, just my little scuffles at the beginning (of the season), trying to find myself again after so much time off. It’s definitely been a journey, but it’s something I wouldn’t trade because I’ve learned so much about myself and what I need to do in times of either adversity or just trying to find yourself again.”

For some time, at least anecdotally, it seemed like the medical and athletic industries’ focus was on reducing return-to-play timetables. Now, more and more, teams seem interested in player rest and efficiency, while perhaps erring on the side caution with regard to returns.

The Braves seems likely to benefit from a conservative approach for the moment, given not only their wealth of young arms but also the modest expectations of the major-league club in 2017.

Hart knows the danger and risk in loading up on young arms, as he recounted some history in speaking with me two year ago:

“Remember the Mets with the Big Three? With (Paul) Wilson and (Bill) Pulsipher and (Jason) Isringhausen, that whole group?” Hart said. “Some years, some development systems, it works out better. For some others, it doesn’t work out at all.”

Will the arms the Braves are collecting turn out more like the Atlanta staffs of the 1990s, or the Generation K Mets of the early 1990s who never fulfilled expectations? We’ll have to wait and see. But as we’ve seen through Fried’s finish to 2016 and an early snapshot of electric stuff this spring, perhaps a recipe of significant risk tolerance, combined with a volume of arms, and a conservative development approach is the right formula in creating the next quality Braves rotation, and yet another successful rebuild led by Hart.

    KATOH’s 2017 Top-100 Prospects

    by Chris Mitchell - February 28, 2017

It’s that time of the year again. Baseball America recently published their top-100-prospects list, as have Baseball Prospectus, Keith Law and MLB Pipeline. Eric Longenhagen will be putting out his top-100 this spring, too. Below, you’ll find my KATOH projection system‘s take on baseball’s most promising rookie-eligible players.

As usual, hitters far outnumber pitchers on these lists, by about three to one. The reason for this, I think, is two-fold. Primarily, it’s just that even the best pitching prospects are risky. They get hurt; they lose velocity; they move to bullpen — all with little notice. Even the pitchers who do pan out are less likely to sustain their success over several years than their hitting counterparts. Secondly, KATOH does not directly account for pitchers’ velocity (or any other measure of “stuff”). If I were able to include a measure of fastball velocity, for example, I imagine most of the top pitching prospects would project more favorably. There isn’t an obvious scouting analogue for hitters that is glaringly omitted by the numbers.

The first top-100 list ranks prospects by KATOH+, which takes into account players’ performance, age, height and ranking on traditional prospect lists. This is the more “accurate” version of KATOH. As it did previously, this incorporates a player’s rank on Baseball America’s top-100 list. However, this version also folds in Eric Longenhagen’s FV ranking for the players who weren’t ranked by Baseball America, ensuring borderline top-100 guys aren’t dinged as hard as non-prospects.

All players with at least 200 plate appearance or batters faced in the minors last year qualify. Enjoy!

Why aren’t the Braves more heavily connected to Robert? They spent too much money on Colon and Dickey to lead the Braves to 78 wins, and now can’t afford the top international prospect not named Otani?

Eno Sarris: Financial report just came out that the Braves lost money last year, could be relevant.

where is this report? SC do you know anything about this?

What does mike folty need to do to become a front end starter and how close is he?

The Atlanta Braves lost money in their first year as a public company, despite a solid increase in revenue.

The team lost $20 million in 2016 after having a $3 million profit in 2015, parent company Liberty Media Corp. announced Tuesday, according to a metric (OIBDA) that adjusts its profit to eliminate the effect of depreciation.

Braves revenue surged from $243 million in 2015 to $262 million in 2016.

Liberty (NASDAQ: LMCA) attributed part of the Braves’ loss to a surge in spending on international talent. The club signed a number of highly regarded players at the July 2 start of international signing season, including shortstop Kevin Maitan, one of the most heralded young players to come out of that signing period in a decade. Maitan received a $4.25 million signing bonus. In addition to Maitan, the Braves signed catcher Abrahan Gutierrez for $3.5 million; shortstop Yunior Severino for $1.9 million; shortstop Yenci Pena, for $1.05 million, infielder Livan Soto for $1 million, pitcher Guillermo Zuniga, for $350,000 and pitcher Juan Contreras for $1.2 million.

The Braves exceeded the amount Major League Baseball allows teams to spend in the international signing period, and incurred penalties for doing so.

The club (NASDAQ: BATRA) also blamed higher expenses from a change to the Braves’ ballpark retail and concession operations, and acceleration of player salary expense as a result of released or injured players.

“The Braves brought retail operations in-house and engaged a new concessions operator for the 2016 season, resulting in increased revenue offset by corresponding increases in operating expenses,” Liberty said.

The Braves debt increased by $118 million during the fourth quarter as it borrowed to fund construction of SunTrust Park and The Battery mixed-use development.

Liberty said SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta projects are “progressing well and on-budget” and that the ballpark will be ready for opening day on April 14th.

“As of December 31, 2016, approximately $618 million had been spent on the new ballpark, of which approximately $373 million of funding was provided by Cobb County and related entities and $245 million provided by the Braves. As of December 31, 2016, approximately $309 million had been spent on the mixed-use development (including $7 million of cost towards future development phases, including purchased land cost, not reflected in the currently forecasted equity contribution towards the mixed-use development), of which approximately $46 million was provided by JV partners’ equity. The remaining $256 million was provided by the Braves, of which approximately $188 million was contributed in equity and approximately $68 million in debt.”

    Well shit.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Dustin Peterson came to Spring Training with a realistic shot of reaching the Major League level at some point this year. But the Braves prospect will now spend at least the next two months recovering from a left hand injury that has occasionally had a lingering effect on hitters.

The Braves announced Peterson underwent surgery on Friday to to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand. Dr. Gary Lourie performed the procedure on the 22-year-old outfielder, who sustained the injury when he checked a swing during Wednesday night's game against the Yankees in Tampa.

While the Braves believe Peterson could resume baseball activities in early May, it remains to be seen how long it might take the outfielder to regain all of his strength.

Peterson slashed .282/.343/.431 and totaled 12 homers while playing a majority of his games at Double-A Mississippi's pitcher-friendly Trustmark Park last year. He then batted .324 and produced a .823 OPS during the Arizona Fall League.

Ranked as the Braves' No. 18 prospect by MLBPipeline, Peterson has been targeted to open his season with Triple-A Gwinnett. There was also a possibility he might have been deemed the top option if Atlanta suddenly gained the need for an everyday outfielder.

Looks pretty basic. Also what hotel is that going up behind the stadium?

the stadium looks extremely bland and basic, im kinda disappointed tbh compared to all the new exciting and fancy stadiums going up in all levels of professional sports

The hotel is a 16 story omni hotel that the braves will own 50% ownership in

How far are the Braves away from playing many games in October?

Not too far way. I'll say 2019

    :pray::pray:

They say you need 10 pitching prospects to get 2 good big league pitchers... Braves have gambled on about 10 arms. Which two (or more??) will be the ones to be the ones we look back on as having worked out?

Isn't that a crazy attrition rate? But it's a thing. I'd bet on Max Fried
