So I've seen it twice now, once in Chicago and now the traveling show in Detroit a couple weeks ago, Chicago was certainly better but I really enjoyed both shows. This might be a sizzling take, but when I listen to the songs on spotify, I find LMM's voice to be nasaly and kind of annoying compared to the ones I saw in person.
Did you listen to LMM first or the live versions first? That usually influences your preference. I saw it in Chicago and the Hamilton there, while certainly good, didn't have near the charisma that Lin has. His voice might be considered classically better but I still would prefer Lin's version.
I went in cold on purpose, so listening after the fact I have the same experience of the recorded version sounding off. I had the Philip Company with Nick Walker as Burr and Julius Thomas as Hamilton. King George was also a rotation, but I liked him more than what I’ve seen/heard of the usual guy.
Miguel is 100% better than LMM. LMM is fantastic and musically a genius... but Miguel is better at the vocals.
Miguel was incredible. I was most blown away in person by the ladies. Not to take away from the ladies on the soundtrack because they’re great but those weren’t my favorite songs but in person, just wow
I got a late show in the run and didn’t get a chance to go back for a reasonable price. Plus I was 2nd row center, so anything less would have been a minor disappointment.
Wayne Brady was playing Burr during the time I went but wasn’t in that day. Burr left something to be desired
This is a bad comparison. Did I read the script to Lincoln before I went? No, I knew what happened ahead of time. If it was a complete fiction play then your point would be valid,
also saw it in Chicago a few months ago and thought the Burr there (Akron something) was spectacular. he had the most stage presence of anyone. George Washington and the King were also really good. But Burr was the best. I didn't particularly like Hamilton because I had listened to the album so much and had gotten used to LMM.
I live in Minneapolis but grew up near Lincoln, NE. 1.5 years ago my dad was on his deathbed and I made a few trips back. Fell for the Ham soundtrack at that time, at first just listening because it'd take a few hours of the drive time. Got hooked on the soundtrack, and entered the discount lottery of every single touring performance in Minneapolis (mostly because I'm a cheapskate and didn't want to pay like $400 for two tickets). Anyway, even though it's a role reversal, because I associate the soundtrack with the last days of our dad, the part in Stay Alive when Phillip says "I did exactly as you said pop..." will just always tear me up. Anyway, Hamilton is great and I hope to see it some day.
(It’s a serious question. I want to know if that is regular there or if it was special on the night I saw it)
I remember him dancing around gleefully on stage but can’t recall him specifically grinding on Hamilton
I’m going in July for first time. I’ve read on here or somewhere I shouldn’t listen to soundtrack before since LMM is on it and Miguel will be live. Do you concur? I’ve already got soundtrack but haven’t listened yet
I didn't and loved it so much I bought it. Don't listen to it imo Some characters are a surprise and you'll lose that if you listen to it
What’s tough is the any person can’t know anything other than how they experienced it and since everyone I know who sees it, loves it, they’ll go with what they did. Most here probably listened first and will tell you to do that but others didn’t and will tell you to do that but neither side really knows what the other side is like
I highly recommend listening, or at least reading his Wiki page, before you go. There were a lot of special moments live that don't come through (and I wouldn't have appreciated nearly as much) if I didn't know the soundtrack before seeing the performance. Spoiler Seriously. This is a spoiler. Spoiler Perhaps the most powerful was when Angelica does the Rewind. I heard that, but didn't see it actually happen on stage to appreciate the narrative development she's explaining. Also knowing there will be "Forgiveness. Can you imagine?" made It's Quiet Uptown so much more suspenseful. I was bawling before those lines were sung. It was so fucking powerful because I knew it was coming. Just my perspective.
We went in cold and I wish I'd listened to the soundtrack or read through the lyrics beforehand The lyrics come at you rapid-fire at times and I felt like I missed maybe 20% of what was thrown at me
You know you listen to the soundtrack too much when your 3-year-old responds to you with “all right, all right, that’s what I’m talking about!”
My four year old constantly asks "what time is it?" I ignore him now to try to discourage him. But I do find it sort of funny when someone is around that doesn't know the drill. Weebrew - What time is it? New person - [ernestly] Nine thirty. Weebrew - What time is it? New person - [perplexed] It's nine thirty? Weebrew - What time is it? [Pause] Me - Show [interruption] Weebrew - TIME!
I finally got to be in the room where it happens and it was wonderful King George didn't grind but he kind of shimmied and made Burr laugh
Apparently, our show was the first performance for the guy playing Lafayette-Jefferson. Dude killed it!
