Tony nominations day Maybe Happy Ending and Operation Mincemeat both with best musical noms MHE tied for most musical noms with 10. Helen J Shen didn’t get best actress but it was a ridiculous field so just a tough year for it. Oh Mary! with a bunch of play noms Neither Denzel or Jake nominated for Othello, seemed like people expected Jake. Really disappointing day for Smash and Real Women Have Curves. Wonder how long they’ll be open now, they have both been losing money
So far Maybe Happy Ending has already taken home best set design, best original score, and best book of music
Jak Malone just won the Tony for featured actor in a musical for Operation Mincemeat. They’ve extended their run until February and it is the show I am most likely to see in December. Unsure how many we will see total but going Saturday - Thursday so will probably see somewhere in the 5-7 range
I don’t remember the name of the song but his “love letter” was out of this world. brought me and my wife to tears well deserved. way to go Jak
Dear Bill. After seeing what you said, I’ve seen a ton of people on r/Broadway say it’ll bring the house down and not a dry eye in the place. I badly want to listen to it but want to go in blind. It has a $49 online rush, an in person rush, a lotto, and possible to sit front row for $139 which while first row isn’t ideal, that’s way cheaper than most shows front row and significantly less than 2nd row
Good chance we see Art as well. Don’t know anything about it but it’s got Neil Patrick Harris. Waiting for Godot not going to happen unless there’s a lotto or I decide to get up crazy early to rush. To sit close it’d be close to $1500 for a pair
Saw Wicked today for the first time. The two leads were amazing. Only complaint I have is that the sound volume was off for the first part of the show, couldn’t understand hardly any of the first few songs. Thankfully they got it fixed well before Defying Gravity. Looking forward to watching the movie now.
pregnant wife wants to go one more time before our first baby in September I don’t know anything about those shows but I have a family connection for all things Broadway. Tell me what two shows I should see in August
Waiting for Godot doesn’t start until September and Art doesn’t start previews until late August but Mamma Mia! starts at the beginning of August and seems like you can’t go wrong there. Other musicals: Have heard Death Becomes Her is very funny and just a fun time. Both Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard are up for best actress. Just in Time is Jonathan Groff’s current project and got him another Tony nom (and maybe back to back wins?) and people rave about his performance as well as Gracie Lawrence. And of course, I cannot say enough, go see Maybe Happy Ending. I love it so much, it’s cleaning up so far (Michael Arden just won best director) and they just this week announced Darren Criss extension through the end of August so it’s expected he will leave after that. Now if they win best musical, and/or best actor, with all the other wins and Darren leaving I’m not sure what that’ll do to prices in August. But a chance to see original Broadway cast on a show cleaning up awards (Lots of wins from Drama Desk also). Assuming Audra is still in Gypsy, that seems like a show worth seeing Going Off Broadway for Little Shop of Horrors is something I’m considering Plays: I know you saw Oh Mary! with Betty but if you’re interested, I think that’ll be during Tituss’ 2nd run. Have heard good things about Stranger Things if you have any interest in the show. Heard the set design and lighting are incredible (won Tonys for both as well as sound design). I think Sadie Sink will be out of it by then but a lot of people rave about John Proctor is the Villain. If it was still open when I was going, it would be a near lock that we would see it. A group of HS students reading The Crucible during the #MeToo movement
Could also look at Dead Outlaw, Boop, and Buena Vista Social Club but if I was choosing 2, they’d be out of that group
We are likely going to NYC in December we’ve seen lots musicals in Little Rock, Dallas, Memphis & even shitty Texarkana (every few years we get a decent one on a weekday). Saw Hamilton in Chicago never been to broadway. Suggestions are appreciated
What shows do you all like the most? Are you/your wife someone who needs to have tickets in advance or would you be fine not having tickets until you’re there and taking a chance on what you might see?
saw Les mis there (only musical I’ve seen multiple times and think Ive seen it 5 or 6 times. Thought it was at pyramid that’s now a fucking bass pro shop, but I was a teenager so really don’t remember tbh Hamilton #1 Le mis #2 We saw come from away in January and fucking loved it it’s way up there
We will likely want to have tickets in advance I’ll be going to slaw vs Houston game on Saturday and wife & daughter will go see rockettes I don’t really give a shit about that so hopefully it works out they do that while I watch basketball but I def want to catch a good musical or 2 while there
We saw Rockettes last year and have no intention of doing so again. You aren’t missing out. I would highly suggest waiting for tickets on that and getting them at the TKTS booth in Times Square. There are 4 shows per day so we were able to get good seats half off there. For shows, everything I told Lip applies The reason I asked about tickets is because 1) you could try TKTS booth for shows also but mainly for lotto but lotto would only work for needing 2 tickets, not 3 so disregard.
Also King George should have been painted orange during the medley the other night, missed opportunity
