So Walz told Kamala he isn’t a good debater and they expect him to lose tonight? Welp, now I am nervous.
The pod jons were very much doing some lowering of expectations this morning and talking about how this is DJ Trance’s best environment politically (meaning debate).
And yet those dumb mother fuckers, especially in the south, can’t wait to vote for him. Because of racism.
First time I saw one of these, I thought it was some kind of bit. But nope. That old preacher was selling buckets of industrial gruel to his flock. A far more cynical thing than I can imagine doing as someone who isn’t religious and not particularly worried about getting into Heaven.
They are massively pro waltz and their source on lowering expectations was within the Harris campaign.
My favorite thing is when they're trying to sell them they have a person off to the side eating some of it that was prepared. "See you can actually eat this!"
The criticism surrounding mob ties/influence is valid. Kind of surprised considering how transparent and regulated labor unions are these days. But the membership can vote him out, so idk. The pocket watching compensation of the avg longshoremen I find confusing. I recall being lectured profusely when two sorority girls sat poolside making similar compensation for “driving business outcomes” on the party planning committee. Is $150k/yr a lot living in NY/NJ? Is upper middle class a status they shouldn’t be allowed to attain in a high COL area? As for their president’s comp, if he’s representing 85,000 workers, working towards the goal of securing the best contract and preserving jobs for them, I think he’s being compensated commensurately compared to any business leader of a similar sized organization/company.
Idc how much they are making. If they can make more from billion dollar corporations, go for it. If it was planned specifically to fuck with the economy right before an election, that's where I have an issue.
The vast majority of them don’t live anywhere near NYC or anything that could be called a high COL area. Could they demand anything resembling that salary in an open market where their employers were free to use machines? Does this sound like good faith bargaining to you?
JD will spew lies, racist garbage, and say a bunch of disgusting shit tonight. he’s also going to be coherent in his attacks on the Biden admin in a way that Trump isn’t capable of. From that standpoint our lovely DC media is going to frame whatever happens, no matter how well coach performs, as a win and probably a “race changer”.
My hope is that coach spends 60% of his speaking time fact checking this prick in a way that gets Vance hot under the collar.
Do the vast majority of them make $150k/yr? I have a tenant who is a longshoremen ($80k/yr) and another who is an intermodal driver ($60k/yr) at the Portsmouth and Norfolk, VA ports. I guess I don’t understand being a proponent of free/open market compensation, but also needing a minimum wage? Or wanting to increase it? Isn’t that just a race to the bottom for workers? I’d need more context, honestly. Did they put off raises or even accept concessions during Covid, the GFC? Has the scope of their work changed? Who determines good faith and what fair pay/raises are?
I mean the contract ends when it ends, I don’t know if there was strategy in having it fall on an election cycle or just pure coincidence, but I tend to think the conspiracy theories surrounding it are a result of how tense we all are surrounding this election.
No way this stunt from the guy that makes seven figures and is a Trump bestie that has ties to the same mob guys as Trump does this as a political stunt. Know why? Because Chumb “knows people.”
Contract rate is $20-39/hour + various container fees, bonuses, and overtime. Don't know where the Kinzinger number came from but Washington Post reported median NY/NJ area pay in 2020 as $160k plus bonus. Which, if that's the number + 77% is what it takes to move shit off the docks, god bless them. But if current technology has them paying people not to work and existing/future technology can make the ports safer and more efficient, then the ILA negotiating strategy is ultimately just going to incentive the complete elimination of their positions. They negotiated the current contract in 2018, and I think it's absolutely fair that they share in the largess bestowed upon shipping companies over the last four years. I have no idea what the right number is, other than to think that it's bullshit to get to your number by forcing the ports to move slower. But if you start out by saying you'll accept X+15, negotiate towards X, and then say you'll only accept X + 15 when management approaches X, it's hard to take that bargaining position as anything other than wanting to strike.
I haven't seen a single Kamala commercial yet this cycle taking Trump to task for January 6th. Are they saving those for the stretch run, or are they just not interested in criticizing a, you know, actual insurrectionist that tried to steal the last election?
Okay, so an upper middle class income in a high COL area, yes? Indeed, I imagine it’s not getting cheaper to live and work in NY/NJ. That’s a reasonable take, I don’t know or understand the specifics surrounding automation as a sticking point, or why they didn’t pursue a similar strategy as the ILWU as lyrtch mentioned. Maybe it’s something they’d concede on, but are using as a bargaining chip. By striking or purposely slowing down in anticipation of the strike? If the latter, I agree they should work the current contract in good faith and just strike when the contract ends. Sorry, you lost me a little here with the phrasing, “when management approaches x”? Are you saying the union signaled they’d ratify a contract if their terms were met, then backed off once their terms were close to being met by management, for the purpose of getting a better deal by leveraging a strike? Holding management over a barrel? Is that what people are calling “economic terrorism”? Yeah, idk, I see your point about bad faith, but fuck it’s hard to empathize with management when the working class has been screwed over for so long and so hard by management. I’m a big fan of comeuppance.
